They seem fairly crap and I'm thinking of using silicone or blue hylomar instead. Has anyone else tried this?

In a word....No.
I've 2001 TXT200 and gasket works fine with a light coat of waterproof grease on both surfaces.
Just nip it up..not too tight as plastic cover.
No idea if same gasket & cover on yours.

Hmmmm, I thouht as much. Having read through some of the threads on here it seems moisture ingress is a common problem with this cover. Silicone it is.

Hi G-G. It was your thread on the subject that prompted me to check. I'm glad I did, it was not pretty in there. Given it a good clean out and if it's sealed properly it should be no bother.
