General Trials Talk

General discussion on the sport of Observed Motorcycle Trials

  1. So, I did Novice but would like to do amateur next time. I feel that would be my challenge there. Anyhow, the issue I am running into with RMTA is they are on Sat and Sun. To me it felt like more like a competitve supportive practice event, which I think why I fell in love with it. Sat and Sun are tough for me due to work, so wondering if there is another competition/event that holds on weekdays? or psosibly large get-together for all skill levels?

Hi there i have a 54 falcon 90 in trials trim. I converted the ignition system to electronic by using a Honda cub flywheel and CDI. This I fitted an additional mass that worked really well with loads of power but no instant get up and go, so was difficult to go over logs. I am putting the original magneto flywheel back on while I have another think. Does anybody know is there an advance curve for a Villiers 8E or is it fixed

Finally picked up my Dragonfly. At 71 I'm having trouble with the kickstart, so electric is the way to go. I think this bike is going to be a game changer. This site should make a subforum. I'm sure there are others.

  5. Probably a very dumb question, but I really have nothing to compare it to since I am new to this. But noticed when I go for a trail ride (to get to my destination) its very uncomfortable and very hunched forward; it is an older trials but perhaps something I need to get used to? or are there trials with a more "enduro" erogonmic type of stance, if that makes sense? Yesterday when I went out to practice on very rocky terrain, i had a lot of pressure on my arms and wrist and lower back due to being hunched forward; again I am new to trials so just trying to fi gure it all out. Top it all off, I have "entered" my first trials event, so im sure I will get to experience a l…

  7. I have a 2009 Gas Gas Raga Replica 300 and it has this Sachs rear shock that is "non-rebuildable." I would like to replace it, but Trials bike parts are not always so easy to find in the USA. Trying to find a replacement shock has frightened me, as I want to buy a new one, but they are expensive and I do not want to buy the wrong new one. Am I over thinking this? Can I buy any shock for a Trials bike and slap it on the ole' Raga? Or do I have to ensure I find one with the exact length eye to eye, and exact diameter of "eyes" at each end specific to the 2009 Raga, and if that is the case where can i find that?

  9. Hey all, so new trials rider here, but an average enduro rider you can say. Nothng special. I did trials for a bit, but stopped, then now started again. Probably 3 months of trials riding all together. Mostly learning to get over "trail obstacles" I know nothing of fundamentals, learning static balancing Not sure if I should just stick to this older 300 and all I need to progress, or soon enough I should look for a new trials. My biggest thing is E start haha. Sometimes I get into some nasty terrain to play in and makes it difficult to kick start due to the pitch Not sure if 125, 200 or 250... 2 stroke 4 stroke etc

  10. Hi I am looking for help/information about my 1980 Fantic 200 rear kick please. I am in the process of sorting out my Fantic 200 and the distance between the shock mounting points is 203mm from inside frame mounting point to inside mounting point at the top on the frame and 220mm for the same points on the swinging arm this does'nt seem right to me and nothing seems to be bent, even with the wheel in and done up the bottom distance is still 215mm so the rear shocks are not parallel. I wonder if someone has replaced the swinging arm with one from a different Fantic. Any views or help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I purchased a 2023 300 Gas Gas txt Gp in the USA. Is it possible to covert it to a 250 by putting on a 250 cylinder, head and piston on it. My issue with the bike is it has to much compression for me to start it. I can start it but during the course of a trials event it it wears me out. I’m a 66 year old intermediate rider that weighs 150. Im not concerned about power, I just want to make it easier to kick. I would b open to any other suggestions like a low compression head etc….

  12. I realize this may be a crazy question but has anyone used carbon fiber as a silencer packing? It’s sound insulation properties are very high and it won’t burn or get brittle. I know it’s expensive but it might just last indefinitely in a muffler and could possibly be reused once it’s fouled. Seems to me that sound decibels would decrease and would last a good long time. When it comes to acoustic properties, carbon fiber is often compared to materials like aluminum, steel, and fiberglass. Carbon fiber generally has better acoustic performance than these materials, as it has a higher stiffness to weight ratio and lower density. Laugh if you will but I’m just wonde…

  13. Started by bikerpet,

The front caliper on my '21 TRS has an annoying tendency to drag constantly and I can't seem to fix it. Couple of days ago on a long steep descent it overheated so badly I completely lost front brake. It wasn't from over use of the brake, it's a hill I've been riding a couple of times a week for quite a few years on a variety of bikes. I am very careful how I use the brakes and it's not a problem. But this time the brake was dragging really quite hard - it would start to skid a little on flat, loose dirt with no brake applied. I took it very carefully down trying not to use front brake at all, but it still completely overheated to the point of the disc just beginning to…

I have always owned GasGas 2 stoke trials bikes and am now considering a Beta Evo 4 stroke. Are the 4 strokes a pain in the rear for maintaince? The gasser 2 strokes rarely gave me trouble. Does anyone know if the betas valves or timing need a lot of maintaince or are they usually reliable without a lot of fuss. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

  16. Started by feetupfun,

I've just done a top end decoke on a friend's (low hours) 2022 TRS 300 and was astounded at how tenacious, dry and thick the carbon deposits were that completely covered both the piston crown and the inside of the head. It ranged from 0.25 to 0.5mm thick. The tenacity and hardness of the carbon in this TRS reminded me of the carbon that formed in my 1970s air-cooled two stroke enduro bikes running on 20:1 castor oil premix. Sure enough, when I then asked the owner what premix oil they use, they told me it is castor oil based. I'm accustomed to seeing soft, wet smudges of carbon that cover about 40 % of the piston crown on my 2 stroke trials bike pistons. Is…
