  1. Got the springs in the mail today...and effectively one fits easily inside the other... Now my question is which side attaches where? one end has an open ended curve and the other end is circular...
  2. If there are any Canucks in the forum i am llooking for Elf transmission oil for my 315 . I live in Montreal and was wondering if there was anywhere close by? Thanks
  3. You make a valid point....I do have the place to keep them...I forgot to mention I also have a 98 Montesa 315r that I ride more than the RL or TY. My brother visits from time to time and is an avid rider, and also my son is getting to that age of being able to handle the 250's so maybe I should just hang on to them for now. Thanks for the sounding board. Fred
  4. I have both a late 70's RL250 and a late 70's TY250... I find that I have more grip and control on the RL than the TY. It could all be rear tire condition but The RL feels like a tractor in sections where the TY would fade and slip. Granted the TY seems a little bit more agile ( lighter) . I have to get rid of one of them not sure which one though. The TY is in better overall shape than the RL but I enjoy riding the RL more. Opinions welcomed.
  5. Thanks for the tips.... I did a thorough job soaking it in carb cleaner, running a very thin wire through it many times and using my compressor to blow it out at each step. I have it back on the bike and runs great. Ticks over on the 2nd kick, idles well and revs smoothly through out the range. I will leave alone for now as suggested and do the same typr of cleaning procedure the next time it acts up. If all else fails I will contemplate the heating up, EZout or left handed self tapping screw ideas. thank you all again Fred
  6. If anybody has a photo of the side stand spring attachment (how the springs go inside each other and attach) would be much appreciated. Thanks
  7. Thanks Esteve. I called Apex and was told they do not handle Montesa parts anymore and he refered me to Lewisport in California. Spoke with Andrian, very nice guy. The 2 springs were available for 9$ for the small and 12$ for the large ( apparently they go inside each other). Shipping out today.
  8. I am missing the spring for the side stand. Is this an easy part to order or are there other springs easier to get that work equally well ?
  9. Well I finally after a few weeks on and off, got my late brothers 315 to tick over. Ticks over on the 2nd kick each every time now. I think my inexperience was the culprit besides probably a desperately needed carb cleaning. For all the new 315 owners out there.... The choke lever needs to be pushed up in the vertical position and not to assume pushing it up 1/4 of the way has activated the choke! Now that I have it running well, I have noticed the cooling fan is mostly always on when riding and only stops running when the bike is idling. Does this sound correct? How would I know if the bike is over heating? Thanks Fres
  10. Just for clarification the Slow Jet # 1 (air bleed) is the jet inside the carb housing hidden behind Slow Jet #2. I am hoping it will be ok and not make the bike run funny. The damage is, the screwdriver slot has been chewed off but the hole of the jet is still clear (can see day light through it. I had a hard time finding a screw driver that would fit to get at the jet, the access is so narrow. I ended up trying a jewellers screw driver, but could not get enough torque to loosen it and as such was chewing off a bit of brass from the screw driver slot. If I have to change the jet ,I am not sure how to get it out? Maybe drill it out , but would be afraid to damage the carb body. Any suggestions? On a final note, I think I may have poisened my self from all the fumes of the carb cleaner I was using...not feeling too great! Thanks Fred
  11. Would like a few opinions. I have a PHBH26 carb that I decided to pull apart and clean. All came apart beautifully and all in good shape, with the exception of the slow jet #1. The bugger would not budge and as a consequence the slot for the srew driver headed has been almost obliterated. I blew out all the brass filings and squirted carb cleaner through the pin hole in the carb throat that leads to the slow jet. If I hold it up to the light, the pin hole in the slow jet #1 is clear. carb fluid sprays easily through it. Do you think the jet will perform the way it should even though the scew driver slot is worn down? if not how would you recommend getting the jet out? thank you
  12. Thanks for the replies. 2hrs will be more than adequate....my wife does not let me stray for more than 1 hr in any case
  13. New to Montesa. I have a 1998 315r which I have not taken out to play with yet. So far, 1 foot of snow is on the ground and I think it will stick around until mid April! Just wondering what a typical length of time or distance is for a 2 litre tank of gas riding it "moderately"? I will be trail riding mostly, in the back woods at the cottage. Thank you
  14. Thanks for the heads up with the left and right spoke distinction. I went to drop the transmission oil last night but soon realised that I would have a nice mess on my hands. The skid( crash) plate is directly below the drain plug and would prevent aligning a drain pan below the drain hole. Do you take the skid plate off before draining? Thank you
  15. Thanks again for the replies. Yes the gear oil is next on my list and it seems quite an easy task to do. The carb clean is a bit more involved and seems time consuming if you don't know what you are doing ( me ) I thought I would try to start her first and see how it runs as the carb. Is the owners manual self explanatory for stripping and cleaning the carb? Thanks again
  16. Thanks for the replies. The sub filter is located under the gas tank right beside the rear break master cylinder cap. There is a rubber hose that connects to the sub filter and runs into the carb somewhere. It is a little foam element no more than a 1inch diametre and 1/8 inch thick. I am just wondering if oiling it will not let it breath adequately?
  17. Hi, new to the forum and also Montesa's. I have acquired recently my late brothers bike, a 98 Cota 315R. He maintained it very well. I have been holding off starting the bike for while now. It has sat for a year. Only recently have I thought to get it back to life so to speak. Before I kick her over I wanted to do some basic maintenance items. I have changed the spark plug (BR6ES) and have cleaned and lightly oiled the main air filter. However that is where I have stopped as I have a few questions. Question 1 Should I lightly oil the sub filter also ( after cleaning)? What is the sub filter's purpose. I dont have it on my other vintage trials bikes ( TY and an RL) Question 2 Would you recommend changing the coolant as the bike has sat for over a year ? If so approx. what volume of collant would I need? I will go get some tomorrow. Also to what level do I fill the coolant to? right up to top of the filler spout? (i.e. to the cap) Question 3 I cant find a tire pressure guage that will read a pressure as low a 2psi. The lowest one I can find starts at 5 psi How does one know when there is 2-4 lbs of pressure in the rear tire? Question 4 The rear rim has a broken spoke and I do have a replacement spoke. Can I change the spoke with out having to take the wheel and the rear sprocket off? I do have the owners manual however the answers to my questions were not too evident . And I did search this forum before asking. Thanks for any feedback or additional maintenance suggestions and tips Fred Montreal, Canada.
