All good information, thanks alot for that cabby. Im going to stick with this 2005 for few years i think, i like the look of it and the way it rides. I just need to be able to get as much training as possible done! Need to true the wheels next week too!

i agree, check your fuel float valve it could be sticking or worse the seat or actual plunger itslef may be damaged, its a cheap fix though. All the mikuni carb kits come with the brass valve and plunger.

Yes i know what you mean about uk ebay being flooded with cheap Shercos, i was really shocked at the prices and the quantity of them on there. Trials here in germany isnt big scene, they are much more enduro motorcross types so trial bikes are hard to come by. However we found a 2005 250 sherco for 1500€ ended up putting 400€ into it (engine rebuild & some little bits here and there) and its really great now. Actually, it needs tyres and then it will be a minter. Are the newer Shercos running a normal dellorto or injected carb these days?

I have loved this sport since about the age of 12 coming from bicycle trials. I got my first bike when i was 14, a broken Fantic 305 for a very reasonable 300 pounds fixed it myself and rode it untill i could get my next bike. A sherco 2000 Sherco 290, loved it rode it and rebuilt it and i wish i had kept it but coming of age to own a car the sherco was sold and i had little to do with the sport other than being a spectator at a few trials.
Now i have settled a little and cant stand being hungover every weekend i wanted to come back into the sport and i had the lust i had to ride again like when i was 12. I now ride a 2005 Sherco 250 now and im loving it.
My question is, Is sherco still the brand they were when i was young? i see in 2010 they put the tank in the mudguard, was this a bad turn for them? Is their newest fleet of bikes strong?

Updated on this; crank has been trued perfectly by a local engineer and the new piston and gaskets have arrived. Built most of it yesterday and putting the engine back in today! Pictures coming..
Thanks for the help lads!

When i was getting into the sport i remember having a sherco one piece suit which was around 2005, seems like it was a few weeks ago but that was a long 12 years ago
Do people still wear them? sell them ? have them ?

Im looking for a front light for my 2005 sherco, they seem to be quite hard to find! Are they all the same fit from 99 right up to this year?
And are they actually any good for riding at dusk, is it even worth having?
-
Thanks for this again Jason,i should recieve the parts in the next few days and hopefully ill have the crank back by then! fingers crossed this weekend ill have it together again!
-
Thanks MrTurtle, a great help. What torque setting did you use?

Ordered my rebuild parts for my 2005 250cc sherco last night from splatshop and im trying to think ahead of which way im putting back together. Ive done engines in the past where i didnt need a crank pulling tool to get the crank back in.
Has anyone got a tried and tested method to get the crank back in safley without damaging something?

Hello Tony, no i just double checked the Standard A Piston for the 290 are 75.95mm.
Definitley measuring the piston correctly too, it was a pretty bad slap.
-
I have my 2005 250cc Sherco open at the moment and im just about to order main bearings from Splatshop.Has anyone had experience with both the unsealed SKF bearing and the other sealed type? is one much better than the other?
-
Now you mention it,there is a hefty scuff on the plastic flywheel cover
-
Hello, I have had problems with piston slap since i got my bike a few weeks ago and decided to sort it now. I know many people have to do this to there 2 stroke Sherco's sometime and im looking for someone with wise words of experience to tell me what size piston to get. I have measured the bore today and it is a very even 72.80mm.The remaining bore is suprisingly very smooth and in good condition.
I was think of going for the B piston as it still has its original actually mesuring around 72.64 now :/
Second;
I was worried about the crank as it seemed to loop when i looked at the fly wheel spinning in the case so i took the crank out and took it to the machine shop today he said it was 7mm out which is quite a bit. Has anyone had this before? Why does it happen and when he straightens it will it stay straight?
Thanks!
