I have just recently bought a rear brake calliper off ebay, and in a stroke of luck (hopefully) the same guy has an engine from a 2001 bike. Is the 2001 engine a nice reliable, strong engine or are they a bag of crap, my bike is a 97 contact 270 but it has a repair to the bottom casing around the clutch, the previous owner tried to repair it with liquid weld but it still leaks trans oil out. What sort of price will be a fair one for a built running engine?

I now own this :-) cheers for the heads up on it managed to get it for £23 which is not to bad I thought. I might have the chance of buying a 2001 engine from the same seller, what is the quality of this engine and what sort of price is fair for a running engine?

Great spot! That should fit mine it seems to be exact match, mine is minus the plastic guard in the bottom but this is the right one.

Hi, I am looking for a rear brake calliper for my late 90's gasser, mine is beyond repair and new callipers(not seen my exact one yet tho) are close to 100 pound, I don't know whether I have to match exact model and year but if I do it's a 97 contact 270 Any help is appreciated

Yeah am going to change all aspects, decided to strip the bike down over the winter so I am replacing a lot of components on it :-)

I am not really trying to achieve anything in particular, just my rear sprocket needs changing and when i looked on ebay there were so many different numbers of teeth i wondered what would happen if the sprocket was changed for one with less or more teeth on it?

How much of the parts of they early Gas Gas bike are usable on each other? I have 1997 JTR and wondering if i can use parts off any other years on mine? If i am not mistaken the 90's bikes did not really change a massive amount, I know the PRO's are a different engine and stuff but are the red early engines the same? Does anyone know enough on the early bikes to help me out with a few questions? Cheers

Hope this is a question worth an answer, How much does the number of teeth on a sprocket matter? When replacing it do you have to replace for the exact same number of teeth or are you open to change it so it has a different effect? Asking as i had a look about and could not really find the answer i was looking for? This time next year i shalt not be a NOOB

well i have checked over my bike with a fine tooth come and all i find is evidence of somebody thinking they know what they are doing but they don't, everything is tight and dirty, unloved and mistreat is the scope of it all, THIS WILL NOT DO!!!!!! So over the winter i am going to completely strip down, clean, grease and replace :-). I know this will end up costing me a little bit more than a younger bike but i figure if i put a bit of money in it and do it all right i can have a reliable bike, going to do all the work myself but may get a specialist to do the engine. So i may ask a few questions i can't find on the forums

MY OIL IS MILKY I have finally got round to work on my bike and have dropped the trans oil out, to find its like milk, i am going to tackle the water pump seal but was wondering, If anyone has experience in change a water pump seal on a 1997 gas gas or if someone could point me in the direction of some footage of this been done. Is there anywhere i can get the seal to match the bike as ebay drew a blank when looked earlier? Thanks again

Thats great thanks, just looked and the pictures confirm mine is the JTX 1997, and thanks for the museum tip they have a download for the parts manual, shows a complete breakdown of the whole bike. Hoping to start and get my hands dirty tomorrow going to put new oil in it checked the window today and cant see any so guessing its really low, good thing i resisted going straight out on it, which is the best oil to have in my bike? Is it worth getting a cheap oil to run in the engine to flush it out then put the better oil in?

Hi, i have just bought my first trials bike today and want to get everything right from the start. Is there a place/website that i can put a frame number into to get the model/make/cc of the bike, this is to only double check what i was told the bike was. I was told it was a GAS GAS JTX270 1997, after looking about on the internet i believe this to be true but there are lots of similar things about to start second guessing it, Secondly i like my bikes to look the part so plan on making her good looking for her age so is there any place where i may get a workshop manual? I am handy enough to figure things out but would like one all the same. And last and final thing. (for now ) The bike kicks over first time every time but seems to not want to tick over all the times is this a quick fix? and where do i start? Tomorrow she gets cleaned down to her bones! she will be shiny!!!
