    Points Setting

Thanks Larry, yes i will leave it alone for now as you say and look properly next week, I do have automotive condenser under my tank so that's ok, if I'm honest I've forgotten what size the feauler gauge was, il look tomorrow as I put a black felt tip pen mark on the one I used so I knew it was the one I'd used on the old points, but on this site id seen a thread saying they need to be between 0.35 and 0.45, is this correct?? I can't get a spark with them at 0.35, it's smaller than that for sure! Like I say i will let you know the size gauge it is tomorrow when I look in my tool box, thanks again

    Points Setting

Thanks graham, I went and put a dab of grease on them earlier, and started it up to check the new points were ok, like I said I gapped them exactly the same as the old ones and runs spot on, only trouble is if I try to gap the points at what the tolerances are it won't spark!! Have to close the gap up to very small for a spark which is healthy and blue and runs spot on, am I right in thinking that the timing maybe slightly advanced if I have to close the gap right up on the points??? Like I say if there set to what I've seen on here then I get no spark.going to leave as it is for now as it runs ok and smooth at idle and pulls strong and smoothly, also got a trial tomorrow so don't want to bugger it up all together!!! Thanks

Hello everyone, just fitted a set of new points on my bul, I've set the gap exactly the same as the old ones, so I'm hoping it will run ok???? I will find out today when I start it... Was too late last night and my neighbour moans at me all the time!!! Was just wondering what oil I should put on the felt pad on the points though please?? Thanks

    timing and points

Thanks for all the replies everyone, a great help! I got her running again!! I shortened the ht lead, also checked wires under the tank which all seem ok and not dis coloured, I also did re gap the points as well although they seemed ok, And she started again first kick, there did however seem a small amount of moisture in the mag cover im not sure how as it has a gasket and all done up tight, but I wonder if the magneto could have also been damp or wet, I will purchase a puller this week to take mag off so I can clean it/dry it, but for now I just run it and rode it for some time to dry it out, thanks for all the info everyone it helped lots

    timing and points

Hello guys, sorry to start a comment on someone else's theead!! I'm a bit puzzled a about my 159, I started it yesterday after it had been sat for 3 weeks, it started 2nd kick fine, I then had a little plod along just up and down my road un till it was warm, and it ran fine!! I then turned it off and left it while I done another job in the garage, went back to the bike about an hour later and went to start it..... Nothing!!! Checked spark and it's very poor, sometimes it will spark sometimes it won't?? I removed plug cap and have also cleaned points and checked the gap which was ok, it has a new ht coil under the tank but am going to just check the wireing under the tank today see if anything is loose etc, it might be that it needs new points and condenser but mine havnt had much use, anything to point me in the right direction to get it sorted?? Got my 1st trial again next weekend and it's been running spot on un till now!! I've got brand new plug in her and tried old ones too!! Thanks in advance chaps

    Bultaco 159

Hello everyone, the rh brake set up on mine is only cable operated, when I 1st got the bike the cable what was on it was seized so I brought a new one but this was about 8 years ago, so I can't remember the make of cable I'm afraid, I understand what you mean about them feeling like elastic though! It does work quite well though, it's adjusted up so I have minimum travel in the pedal and it does seem to lock on quid hard and feels a good pedal, it's not 100% brilliant but does stop me fairly well and skid etc if I had too, but a rod set up would be a lot better!

    Bultaco 159

Ok bondy thanks for that info, it makes sense because to start with they were fine, but they have been on there for about a month now and are just coming off on there own and that was without me spilling any petrol!! Oh well I will have to do away with them!!

    Bultaco 159

Sorry Larry I just read your post again, the rh brake leaver was already done when I bought the bike, to be honest I've not really looked at how it's been done because it's always been like it, I shall look into it more and could possibly take a photo for you??

    Bultaco 159

Sorry about the photo, not sure why the pic went on upside down ?, thanks for putting it right!! Had a good blast on it today, I havnt put nothing on the tank, it is just one from in motion, which the stickers are coming off already!! May have to buy some more, like I say it's a 159 model which someone done in blue so I just kept it that way

    Bultaco 159

My 159 after going out for a days ride then home for a good wash and polish!!
  13. Thanks for the replys everyone, i think I will leave it as it is for now, because they do cost a little bit, and like people have said if it's not broke then why fix it, and I agree with this!! Just know that when it comes to setting new points and timing I will struggle because it was years ago when I done it, which I did right but then bike sat in garage for a long while, I'm sure it will all come back to me when I need to do points and timing!
  14. Ok thanks for the info, I'm not sure what to do really, think il leave it for abit, my bike always starts first or second kick cold and always first when warm, I've only ever set points and timed it up once..... Took me a long time to get it spot on lol, so I think when that time comes I will go down the road of electronic ign for maintenance reasons, thanks for your help bondy
  15. Hello everyone, just after some advice please, I'm thinking of electronic ign soon for my 159 bultaco, my bike is currently points and condenser and is running spot on at low revs and when opened up it pulls well and revs lovely so I'm in no rush to change to electric yet, however I just wondered if I would notice much of an improvement with electronic ign? I think I will leave the bike as it is for now and maybe purchase one when my set of points have had it, which leads to my next question.... Which ones are best on the market, or are they much the same?? I've seen in-motion one and electrex world one?? I will not be needing lighting coil one either, thanks for your help and sorry for the long post !!!
