  1. Back in the day my Sherpa 198A had what I believed to be an aftermarket one piece kick start lever that swivelled from the bottom rather than the top, it also hugged the cylinder head closer than the original type. From what I remember it had Bultaco stamped on it Does anyone know who made it ? and if they are still available?
  2. Hello All, As I do not know anyone with a 349 (starting to understand why) I have no reference bike, but I think I have got the answer, When refitting the air box I have made up x3 rubber spacers fit them on the locating bolt between the top of the air box and the underside of the x3 frame air box mounting brackets. This slight lowering of the air box has given it a small clearance from the exhaust which after a bit of running seems ok.
  3. Hi Can anyone out there tell me how much clearance there should be between the side of the airbox and the exhaust downpipe on an early 349? Mine appears to have little to none and has started to melt the plastic? I believe the exhaust to be stock Montesa as I have compared this to my spare which is definitely original, the bracket and frame tube appear to be true, the only thing I have done when recommissioning the bike was replace the original silencer with a WES alloy type but this joins the down pipe nearer to the shock absorber mounting bracket. Likewise if anyone could tell me the clearance of the exhaust from the tank seat unit, obviously I do not want to adjust things to a point where this may melt! Does anyone know of an airbox /filter mod? , I used to have a Twinair double sponge filter back in the day on my Bultaco that was attached directly to the carb.improved breathing no end. All in at loss here folks
  4. Hi I am considering changing the footpegs on my 1980 cota 349 to the more modern wider level style as I am finding myself slipping off the original angled pegs in the mud with my flat sole boots! The original pegs are mounted on a lug which is brazed onto the frame so the S3 type pegs will not fit as they need to be open ended with a wider gap to fit either side of the lug, I don't really want to modify the frame so I was hoping someone out there may have some advice? From what I have seen on this forum the later 349s and MH's with the later frame design have a different set up which allows the use of S3s or have they been modified?
  5. Thanks folks for the replies, As ever a topic that attracts different opinion and preferences! Dare I ask for views on running Castor in the semi synthetic option? Cheers
  6. Hi After reading so much on this subject am I correct in thinking if I was to run my 1980 349 on one of the following popular full & semi Synthetics I would be ball park ok? Castrol Power 1 full synthetic at 50: 1 Castrol A747 semi synthetic (with Castor) at 40:1 My preference would be to go semi for the standing time protection it has over a full Synthetic on internals but am I reading into things to much? Anyone ran either of the above long term and would like to give the benefit of their experiences? Advice please Thanks
  7. Has anyone modified the front forks , using Hybrid or Magical aftermarket parts and was the difference worth it?
  8. KS thanks for the tip, Mods and new parts to date since purchase and when picture taken WES rear silencer Electronic Ignition Montesa front mudguard and flap Kill button Still to fit higher bars I am 6'2" and new rear shocks, going traditional with Renthals 6" I just found they are now owned by the Americans (how out of touch am I?) but still made here in Manchester.are they the same quality of old? Advice on shocks or views criticism on works to date on bike would be appreciated. Looking forward to feedback from great site and source of information.
  9. Hi, Thanks for reply, my fading memory seems to recall seeing the plastic tank models at events in the North West Centre early 80's (mostly Sandiford supplied) perhaps like me with my Bultaco the owners bought the aftermarket "Works" tank to protect the stock one from Lancashire rocks?
  10. Hello King Scorpion Thanks for the reply, it explains why checking out pictures on the web the difference in seat tank units on the black frame models.
  11. Hello All, After an absence of 30 years plus I decided to have another go at keeping my feet up. Back in the day I rode Bultaco's but could not find one to make my "come back" on so ended up with a 1980 349 Cota instead. I remember riding one in the early 80's although not as agile as a Sherpa (bit longer wheelbase) it felt stable, think I am going to need all the stability I can get! The bike is a black frame red tank model, but not the SSDT replica, my memory is not that good but I think the SSDT came out in to celebrate win before the white tank red frame World Championship replica which I think was 1981? My question is did the 349 come into production in 1979? or did Montesa run two models in 1980 as my bike appears to have a slightly different tank unit, fibreglass over alloy with a smaller seat and no fuel level pipe. I seem to recall that the SSDT was all plastic or polypropylene and possibly not road legal although I had similar on my blue Bultaco and it was never questioned? Any Montesa historians out there?
