  1. So how do I set the level the tangs rest at when holding the carb upside down? Somebody suggested bending them, but there must be a better way than that?
  2. I thought for a while that the fan wasnt working on my bike, but it does switch on when I really rev it. Then it switches off again, is the thermostat thing maybe set too high? This is even after riding it for hours.
  3. Had a look inside the carb today, and according to this http://www.r2wtrials.com/images/beta/carb/...20-%20After.jpg my tangs are at the wrong level, they definetly are not pointing towards the top of the pilot tower, more like horizontally. What kind of different does this make? How can I adjust the level they sit at? Also the pipe that comes out the backside of the carb was resting against the exhaust pipe, and had actually melted so that it was sealed.
  4. I couldnt download it for some reason, so i got somebody else to download it then email it to me. Then it wouldnt open, so I looked for a newer version of acrobat reader, updating from version 4 to 5 did the trick. Very helpful, much thanks.
  5. I stay 80 miles nw of inverness right on the coast, dont think I'd rather ride anywhere else. Theres limitless fun to be had here, so remote you can go for miles over the hills without seeing any sign of civilisation.
  6. They all seem fine, I'm assuming the problem is too much petrol is getting through. Problem is I dont know much about carbs and I dont want to mess around with it and cause more problems. I checked out the link about carb setup on the other carb thread but cant say that I understood it much.
  7. I finally got my beta running forwards again after replacing the flywheel key, but when I started it up it was still not sounding right. My gfs dad reckoned the mixture was too rich so we tried unscrewing the mixture screw slightly. It started sounding better and better and wasnt missing beats as much. Problem was the screw became quite loose when it was at the right position, I should've known it would fall out. Spoke to my gf's grandad(pre 65 obsessive compulsive) and he suggested carving a bit of wood to plug the gap left by the missing screw, just until i can get a replacement. Tried running the bike like this and it seemed fine-ish, I think it might be a little lean though, as the engine sounds higher/faster than normal when idling. Is it bad for the bike to run it like this? Also when I do get a replacement, I'm concerned that there is something up with the carb as I doubt the mixture screw should have to be unscrewed that much in the first place. Dont want to lose it again. thanks in advance for any help
  8. Much thanks again to everyone for the very helpful advice, even with all the headaches the bike has given me in the last few weeks I cant help but love it to pieces.
  9. Took the flywheel off and the key was snapped in half, flywheel was about 90degrees out. Least now I know what the problem was, although I'm wondering why it happened. I was able to loosen the nut that holds the flywheel on just by using a spanner and holding the wheel with my hand. Does this mean that it was not tightened enough which allowed it to break the key? Much thanks to Gary(if you read this) for sending me a new key.
  10. Dont worry I havnt givin up yet, just got back from work and once I've eaten will check the flywheel first. If that looks ok then I would certainly like to seek further advice. Seeing as I live in scotland would there be somebody closer to home I could try contacting for advice? When the bike was running, it did seem to be 'skipping beats' even when warmed up, could this be too much petrol or another side effect of the timing being off? Thanks
  11. thanks for all the help people, will have a look later on tonite. Starting to have doubts about beta, its my first trials bike and I've had nonstop trouble with it since I got it, dont think its ever lasted more than a full days riding without something going wrong with it.
  12. I just registered today to ask about the exact same problem. My 2004 beta 270 is not starting properly, and when it does it sounds terrible, lots of backfiring when trying to start it up. When I finally do get it going it rolls backwards. Havnt the foggiest idea what to do with it and what you said about the black boxs and coils etc... went right over my head
