  1. Time to get ready for the opening rounds of ITSA Mtn West which will be held at Bull Hollow Raceway, Monticello UT,on

    June 9/10.

    Plenty of parking areas for RV's, great terrain, and with the ITSA format 25 sections a day. Each class rides 10 sections within the 25, NO SPLITS, and 3 loops. Entry fees $25 per day for members, $35 for non members. Same old gang, different name, but THIS IS TRIALS, FOR TRIALS, BY TRIALS.

    Yes, its a Cub hub. You can see plenty of pictures of same on my "blog" as I'm rebuilding my Cub at the moment. The sprocket I use is made by Talon to take a 420 chain and there is 1/4" spacer that can be used. Both available from SM Products. Nice ride in the Pre 65 !

  3. Thanks to all for your contributions to this thread. A lot of pent up feelings me'thinks! Going with the flow we have formed our NEW chapter of ITSA and have come up with our first schedule. A full report of this is on my blog today called "ITSA FIXED" .... and don't forget you can now ride all those twinshocks of the 79-85 era at our events...... so get fettling those Fantics, SWMs, TLRs etc and get some wothwhile saddle time in.

  4. Well for those following this gripping yarn here are some articles that I wrote back in 2008 and nothing much has changed since then. The Board of Trustees keeps rejecting the proposal, Ahrma lost its standing with the AMA, all fees have gone up, and after many years of excellent events (for trials riders) under Ed's leadership we are left with a pathetic series which few will bother going to unless it is on their doorstep.

    The time is ripe for change as the Trustees won't !

  5. If you continue to use the current system then you are committed to using the two part cable, one piece to the carb and the other to the pump. Using pre mix at about 40:1 you can dispense with that and use a Domino throttle. Look at all the parts that could fail. Pump, broken cable to the pump, failure to keep the oil in the tank, failure of supply line to the pump, failure of line to carb on your model from the pump.

    The choice is yours but most people convert back to premix.

  7. Wow ! what a lot of replies and feelings ? Thank you all for your comments both on this web site and and on my "blog".

    To answer one or two questions, the first concerning the Twinshock Class proposal. This has been submitted on numerous occasions and usually met with an unqualified rejection. This year it was a 50/50 affair. From reading between the lines they (the trustees) thought that allowing them in would require a FIFTH or SIXTH line through the sections, as though these machines, basically those built post 1979, were some "superbike" that would clean everything that we laid out. Not the case as WE all know, and indeed many bikes of that period do ride Ahrma trials along with modern bikes. They are divided into Modern Twinshock and Modern Support BUT are not competing for any National Championship.

    So in essence our propsal sought to allow "the last of the Twinshocks" in and give them their own class and championship. It would of course have swelled entries to events and Ahrma membership. Just because you own a Fantic or a late model SWM or Bultaco doesn't mean you can ride everything!

    After the Ahrma/AMA debacle costs rose with a large increases in membership fees, entry costs and in some cases event parking! ITSA on the other hand costs a LOT less in ALL departments including event insurance and is still in good standing with the AMA.

    The ITSA rule of "stopping in balance" just clarifies what was always a "grey" area even back in the early 60's when I started riding in the UK. The rules stated that a failure would be deemed to have occurred ...... "when the front wheel ceased to rotate in a forward direction." Back then very FEW Observers would penalise this if your feet were on the rests and if you were using the clutch to achieve it you still had the problem of re-engaging same and finding traction without wheelspin.

  8. Not to digress too far from the original point which was Ahrma's failure to listen to it's membership and wishes and their non acceptance of the machines that you choose to ride.

    The two Major US Vintage trials organizations both use No-Stop rules and as far as can be seen will continue to do so. The "2 Handed clutch mechanisms" of most vintage trials machines and heavy flywheels do not lend themselves to hopping and bopping about as apart from the 300lb weight of an old'un compared to 140lb and hydraulic clutch and brakes of the latest machines the vintage riders wish to ride the machines in the way they were intended and to the rules of the period.

    It would seem neither Ahrma nor ITSA offer you the style of riding you wish so I would assume you are better served at a State modern event where the challenge to beat a modern bike on the same course under stop rules would be very satisfying.

  9. Now i know it doesnt effect me as i dont ride in the usa but why do you feel they need to drop the no stop? I would have thought it was totally appropriate for a twinshock organisation to run trials to no stop rules. If you run to stop allowed rules the sections will just get tighter and tighter to allow for all the bu66ering about and the steps will get bigger and bigger for the same reason. Trials clubs over here are rapidly coming to the conclusion that no stop is the way to go and all Classic clubs have been no stop for ever. Even the Scottish and Scott are no stop.

    OTF you can rest assured we will never be going Stop allowed ! A momentary "hesitation" as it was in the 60's is acceptable, vintage trials machines are designed to be ridden no clutch, perfect throttle control and good use of all the flywheel has to offer.

The 2012 Ahrma Vintage Trials schedule is little more than an insult to the outgoing National Trials Coordinators, Ed and Evelyn Peacock who have worked tirelessly to promote high quality and enjoyable trials during their long stint in office. The article on my blog has created considerable interest in the possible "way ahead" and all comments are welcome from those with a Vintage Trials passion.

  11. As its a fixed plate stator no timing is required. You could elongate the stator plate holes but I'm not sure this would give improved results. New points, condenser and plug.Set points to 15 thou and plug to 22.

  12. Yes and I used one! The bash plate you describe is the one fitted on my Majesty. I found it on one of the many "scrap TY250A's" that have been through the shop over the years. I tried to find the manufacturers but can only assume they went out of business as they could not be traced. It was a superb shield in all respects.
