Making Bigger Logs

I have lots of smaller logs (8-10") around my property and I was wondering if anyone came across a good way of fastening smaller logs together to make a bigger obstacle?

I have debated about using rope, fiberglass ties (like on big shipping boxes), and rebar to hold them together. Once the snow clears, I want to build up my riding area with bigger obstacles.

Down at a recent trials in Hattisburg, MS the guy had a huge log section. He had notched the ends and stacked them like a log cabin. He had one part that was four or five tiers tall and the champs and experts were hitting it hard. Nothing ever moved. He had notched the logs with a chain saw. I guess you could get out your old Boy Scout book and review the rope lashing part for a little security but the logs in MS were not lashed.
