Ty175 - Ignition, The Next Mod? 200 Kit Also?

Hi All

I have fitted Boyesen reeds, Sammy Miller tail pipe, 27.5 pilot jet and high flow air filter to my TY175. Thanks to some great advice on this forum (especially from Andy.T) it is running great and the improvement over standard is big.

I am considering an electronic ignition kit and would like to hear from anyone that has fitted one to their TY175.

Where did you get it (TY Trials, JK hirst, other)? What cost? What difference has it made?

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the expense for me as it'll cost (with shipping to NZ) about half what I paid for the bike.

There has been some discussion of more cost effective ways of doing it, i.e. not a complete kit, has any one done this? What are the pitfalls?

Similar questions about 200cc kits?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi kimpybugalugs, glad your bike is running nice. I have fitted the electronic ignition to my bike the one from HERE and I would say it was a definite improvement (I did have problems with the old system breaking down on heat) but the new system does give more power, its up to you to judge if its worth all that money as the points system is Ok if its set just right. I will say the electronic system is a just fit and forget system which is another bonus. I did think about getting hold of an electronic ignition system off another bike, perhaps something like a pit bike and trying to fit that, there is some info on the net about doing similar things and I think someone mentioned a Honda 50 ignition system, its just a thought if you have the time to play around with the bike. With regards to the 200ccc kit I do know someone who has one fitted and to be honest I don't think his bike has any more power than mine and you will probably have to mess around with the jets again to get the most out of the extra cc's. Hope this helps.

Hi Andy

Thanks for your reply.

If I go for it, based on info I have at present, it will probably be the TY Trials kit as I've bought stuff from them before. Great service and great products - maybe this free plug will earn me a discount?

I don't like the idea of mucking around with the carb set up so the 200 kit will probably be ruled out. I'll probably just freshen up the 175.

Cheers

Ian

I fitted a TY Trials kit to my TY and it's made the bike 100% reliable after some annoying eletrical problems which prompted the mod in the first place

I don't feel qualified to comment on improved power output, because the bike never ran for long enough or properly to judge before fitting the kit!

The thing i have noticed, and appreciate is the way it stats 1st kick EVERY time, (red-hot or been sat unused for months!) and is also very difficult to stall even at tiny small throttle openings.

So, yes it was worth it for me.

Cheers

So another vote for the TY Trials kit. I might have to ring John for pricing.

My TY starts first pop whenever and has never missed a beat so I'm not thinking of changing due to electrical problems. It's more of a "will it complement the other mods"? kinda thing.

More bottom end grunt to haul me around is what I'm after.

I think the only thing holding me back now is justifying the expense.
