October 23, 201015 yr Hi trials is new to me I just bought a sherco 250 it seems like It only has 4 gears with a neutral between every gear but no fifth is this a common fault can it be easy fixed any help much appreciated Thanks stilly
October 23, 201015 yr Stilly, I have not experienced that with my late model 5 speed. I'm wondering if it might have a bent shift fork inside the transmission. Also, I've never occurred a false neutral which makes me think bent shift forks. If that's any help.
October 24, 201015 yr i agree, i think your best option is to take the gear selector fork out and have a look if its bent.. never encountered the false neutral though......?? hope you get it sorted.......all the best
October 24, 201015 yr Author Thanks I will get my local bike shop to inspect much appreciated, don't fancy stripping the gear box to bits sounds like a job and a half
October 25, 201015 yr Since it seems to be effecting all gears, my guess would be it took a hard lick to the lever and shaft and has damaged the ratchet mechanism on the end that drives the shift drum. Easy enough fix, but requires disassembly of the clutch side.
October 25, 201015 yr Author Bike still runs sweet, changes gear ok finds neutral perfect the track I built with stream sections and logs to get over some steep hills, I can only sometimes get into third needing fifth is not a problem at the moment, think I will enjoy the bike for now as I have just got it.

Easy enough fix, but requires disassembly of the clutch side. Since it affects all the gears, I agree with Copey (jeez, never thought I'd say that). Check the racheting mechanism, especially the spring that puts tension on the roller that drops into the slot between the points of the "star" on the end of the shift drum. The roller locks the transmission in each gear. Jon
October 26, 201015 yr Author Yeh I Defo need to get the gears sorted seems like my clutch slips in 4th when you give it a fist full, I have just put new friction plates in and new oil any ideas what to do next,

Not sure if the Sherco uses an "indexed" pressure plate like the early GasGas (mark on the pressure plate lines up with mark on spring tower). Jon
