hi everyone,this is my first post(of many,no doubt) probably been covered many times but couldn,t find any(probably looking in the wrong sections of the forum) i am shortly going to be stripping down the bottom of my 2002 290 as i have a growling type noise coming from my bottom end(of the bike) what i was wanting help with is the parts needed and possibly some tips as which is the best way to do it, after a little research i think i will need, 2 main bearings and two crank shaft seals,possibly big end bearing,clutch case gasket,crank case gasket,think i need a gear selector return spring, a clutch holding tool and a flywheel puller,and i will need to inspect bearing/s in gearbox section. don't know if i've missed much out,will i need a cylinder base gasket? many thanks in advance

You will need the cylinder base gasket, probably shouldn't need the big end bearing as a bad 1 doesn't make the growling noise you describe.

You can get around needing the clutch tool if you have access to a air powered rattle gun

Replacing the kickstart spring while you're doing this is a good idea, would be a good time to strip & rebuild the waterpump as well which hopefully will only involve bearings & seals

Have a look at the pinned manuals at the top of the page to find a step by step guide, doing the main bearings is a fairly simple job that should be able to be done by most people in a day

Hi biggegg, good luck doing the bottom end. Not that difficult at all. See your in the Newcastle area, I'm in Wallsend and have a flywheel puller if you need to borrow one and also a small compressor with windy gun for getting the clutch basket off. Just let me know.

hi chris,thanks for the offer,i live in gateshead,i was going to have to buy a flywheel puller and i was going to borrow a friends 12v(car battery connection) windy/electric gun but i don't think much of them? so i possibly will take you up on your kind offer
