As you probably know, I was not at the Manx Two Day this year, however, I shall be at this coming weekend's Classic Manx Two Day, so the plan is to write about that trial - it will be interesting to see how the two events compare.

In addition, it is not always possible to cover everything in my column, and to keep it interesting there must be variety. Whilst those down south and elsewhere will probably not know of the late Dick Horner, there are plenty in Yorkshire who did; equally, the Old Mine is a venue well known by many people.

There was no intention to dismiss the Manx, in fact if there had not been other subjects to cover, then the trial would have probably featured. Then I would have been criticised for commenting upon an event which I had not attended. I can't win!!

You can win Mike, just keep up the good work.

I for one look forward to reading your weekly column, I don't always know the people or the events you write about, but it's always well worth the read.

Keep it up. :D

Firstly I apologise that I can only comment about The Old Mine at Kinlet, I didn't know Dick Horner but I was very sorry to hear of his passing.

I came to know the Old Mine at Kinlet in the 1960's through the Solihull MCC and subsequently the Sutton Town MCC where we organised dozens of events including time trials.

I always remember the track into the place was full of pot holes and you could never move at more than a snails pace and your vehicle looked like it had been on safari by the time you got out again, did it ever get any better?.

We used to test the depth of the mine shaft under the heavy trap doors on the surface by dropping big rocks down there but you would never hear them hit the bottom.

Yes it wasn't the most pleasant place to ride in the wet but you could almost guarantee never riding the same section twice in different events.

I wonder what happened to some of the guys and gals of the Solihull club and the Sutton Town MCC who used to work their backsides off setting up sections, if any of them read this maybe they would like to drop me an email on, twinshock@aapt.net.au as many friendships were established at the Old Mine and also at Burrington Farm is that place still being used ?

We have exactly the same problem in Australia with illegal riding by noisy enduro or MX bikes and there are three properties we have lost over here in the last 6 months so the problem is not confined to the UK.

I trust the Midland centre riders still have many properties to use but it was still very sad to hear of the loss of the Old Mine

Cheers

Roger Galpin
