Went to fetch out my 2000 315r for some friday afternoon practice, and there was a pool of oil under the rear shock (definitely not from the gearbox, before anyone asks)Have taken it to a long established (mx/enduro) suspension specialist. He wasn't too sure, but said he'd have a look and let me know.

Does anyone know of somewhere that can do the work on these shocks ?

Or do you really have to replace the shock when it needs servicing ? (seems like a rip off to me)

If a replacement shock is required, is there a better aftermarket item available in a similar price bracket ?

No, you don't have to replace the shock just because it is leaking. I had mine rebuilt by a suspension specialist, and it wasn't that expensive. Furthermore, the damping adjuster on mine was broken internally, so he machined a small batch of replacements because you can't buy them from Showa. If your adjuster is seized or broken, you can buy one from my suspension guy: http://www.computrackboston.com/

If you want to replace your rear shock, Lewisport carries TRP shocks for Montesa, Sherco, GG, and Beta Evo:

I like people who live on the edge ... they leave more space for me.

Thanks fastducs ! A rebuildable aftermarket shock like that TRP looks like the way to go if I end up having to replace. I'm not paying over £300 for the showa shock if the manufacturers claim it cannot be rebuilt. I'm still waiting to hear back from the suspension specialist re. my shock.

Has anyone in the UK had their rear shock rebuilt ? Those shocks can't be expected to last around 10 years without being serviced - it's more like 6 months interval on a mx / enduro bike. Or are all those 315r out there bouncing around with no gas or oil in the shock ? :bouncy:

The Showa is easily re-built and will feel like new when done so.

Thats useful to know, can anyone recommend a shop to do it (in UK) as I reckon mine needs doing.

I've used Brook Suspension (http://brooksuspensi...o.uk/index.html) to remove the expansion tank and rebuild a Showa RTL shock..

Got mine back from Pro Racing repaired and ready to go :) It sounds like these shocks are economically viable to service so long as the bladder has not been damaged, but you can't tell if it is ok without dismantling the shock.
