General Trials Talk

General discussion on the sport of Observed Motorcycle Trials

  1. Where are you in the learning curve? I liked this idea when I was teaching......When I assessed my students I would ask myself, are they: 1. Unconsciously incompetent? 2. Consciously incompetent? 3. Consciously competent? 4. Unconsciously competent? or, 1. I am unaware of what I need to know (or how to do it). 2. I am aware what I need to know, (but struggle to do it) 3. I can do it if I think about it 4. I can do it without thinking I just thought I would share that thought... hope someone enjoys. Cheers Graham

Just got xui full race Kevlar clutch kit with the 4 plates, it’s showing a 30 degree machining on the clutch pack operating fingers? Is this at the clutch pack end? Looks like it? does this entail going to a machine shop to have done? i thought it was at the other end of finger, bolt end, so I could just grind or file off? anyone got this set up to advise? No mention of this at all on website from shop or xui website, v f##d off...... Looks like I’m fubaared for this weekend..........this was supposed to be a drop in fix!! ??

I've been struggling to get the bead to set on a new tire installation. Got a little frustrated and put about sixty pounds in it. Sounded like a gun going off but it finally set the bead. Now the valve stem is leaking air. Very slowly but... My question is did the pressure damage the rim strip? It was working fine before. I tried tightening the nut of the valve stem and that helped some but still leaking. I have a new rim band but don't want to ruin it.

What is a good way of physically securing a modern trials bike. Enduro bikes can be chained through the frame but I can't see a way of doing that with a trials bike. It looks like you could chain it up but it would be easy to unbolt forks or wheels to remove the chain. Even if you removed both wheels, they are so light that a single man could just carry it off. Short of keeping it in a cage, I can't see how you can secure the bike within a locked garage. Any ideas?

On some SSDT and Scott Trial vids some riders are using slightly larger tanks- they appear to always be on gassers. Are GG the only manufacturer to offer a bigger tank for longer rides?

Looking into the weights of various bikes (250-300cc) Who makes the lightest bike? - I’ve already figured out the Mont is a bit too porky! * thinking of a light bike to hang on a Dave Cooper rack. Need to come in under 75kg (inc rack) for vertical towbar load. Cheers Boner.

Back in the day's, you would see in all trail and trials bike advertisement the fork angle the trail along with the wheelbase. Anybody know these on there bike. I am not interested in the '' why and it's better '' just the dimension of the different bike. Guy

In various chats about bike development etc its 2t, 4t, electric etc and always rumours about Honda releasing a new bike in 2020- 2021 etc and guessing what they may do next - it wont be a 2t as currently their policy is against that technology but it got me to thinking about a hybrid bike. Trials is probably 70% low power with 30% max power. Lots of descents as well for regenerative braking. Just wondered if a small capacity engine with back up electric would work. Weight would always be a drawback but maybe combined generator/motor, minimal fuel, single speed may off set it. Just a random thought but would be an interesting project - might be i…

  11. Morning Chaps, In your opinion which bikes are louder, 2T or 4T ? I’ve got (nice) neighbours who don’t hugely appreciate motorcycle noise - can’t understand it myself!!! Obviously, no trials bike is going to be as loud as a crosser, but still worth considering. Cheers Boner.

I originally posted this on another forum as a time tested method to reduce numbness in your right hand, and someone tried it and replied that it was a great way to increase throttle precision. So why not post it in a trials forum? If your right hand gets more numb than your left, it is probably due to excess clearance between the throttle tube ID and your handle bar OD. I have measured a couple bikes with handle bar diameter = 0.870" and throttle tube ID = 0.910, or 0.04" of diametrical clearance. Get some UHMW bearing tape (McMaster.com, pn 76445A722, 0.005" thick) and in 3 equally spaced places, wrap your handle bar with a couple loops of tape. One wrap increa…

Hi I'm a novice riding a old twinshock, Id like to own a newer bike & assumed a 250 would be the obvious choice. Secondhand bikes within my budget (ideally £1500-£2000) there's more 125s & 280/300s than 250cc advertised. tapping in to your experience what would you choose? Cheers

That of all the brands, it seems like TRS riders are the most likely to go full "power ranger" with the TRS clothing? Do they come cheap with the bike or does the bike attract a certain type (like with BMWs). I'm a tart and I'd like a shiny new TRS RR but I don't think I could bring myself to wear the kit too... But then I'm a fat old man.. Thoughts? ?

I've just swapped around some tyres between bikes and now find that one rear X11 is loose on the rim and spins and pops the bead. The tyre was on an older style rim with rubber strip (GasGas '05), now it's on a Morad tubeless rim (Sherco '13). It popped the bead on very easily compared to all other X11's I've done, and now pops it off equally easily! I'll probably just put it back on the original rim which it worked on, but I'm wondering if there are any good tricks to get the bead to grip a bit better? I mounted it with soapy water as per my usual technique, but have now mounted it using WD40 having read that WD40 tends to make the rubber go a bit sticky. …

Hi, I wondered if anyone knows how to search a specific forum using the search tool rather than the whole "community"? I am sure I used to be able to do this but haven't felt the need until today, when I realised I couldn't. I wanted to read about Beta pistons. Perhaps someone cleverer than I can help?!
