  1. Morning guys getting round to refurbing my 1998 Beta Techno which since it is rarely used has been a bit ignored in the frame department. Could anyone tell me what the part codes are for the linkage bearings? Got a ridiculous amount of slack there Or is it a case of just getting direct from Beta and paying up 😅 also the rear brake is non-existent, tried bleeding and doesn’t seem to hold pressure for any length of time so think it is due a master cylinder…if anyone has one or can direct me towards one that would be good, if not it’ll also be a Beta job ££££££ thanks!

    Techno questions

Morning all! ive had my 1998 Techno (lampkin edition if it makes any difference) for many years now, it’s used as a spare toy as I mainly ride enduro and it’s due a refresh as it’s been sat for a while i totally rebuilt the engine, water pump etc so that is all good, fan kicks in nicely, recently rebuilt forks with new seals and oil... however the brakes are always terrible, seemingly no matter what I do they are utter crap, plenty of pressure on front just doesn’t stop well and back had pressure and now it’s gone again. is it possible to put rev3 or newer brakes on? And just swap out the whole system? I also have a stripped thread on the swing arm spindle, bought one on eBay back in Jan and just fine to fit it...too big 🙄 a whole 0.5mm out on diameter (16.5mm vs 16mm for the one that came out) it was listed as for all Technos so not sure what is going on there?! There’s another listed by the same bloke but I’m reluctant to buy if it’ll be wrong again... any ideas? and finally the linkage bearings are shot, is there a full kit to replace and do they need pressing in? thanks!

    Beta Techno ‘98

Lovely looking techno, Walker. i got a bit distracted solving other issues on it the last couple of weeks...namely my new water pump seal hadn’t solved the issue so off with the case and new shaft too and a pain bleeding radiator through. Seems to be sealing now which is good. wired fan into lighting coil so that now works although isn’t kicking in on thermo which is unusual as it used to so another thing to order... Issue now, as well as brakes, is that it seems to be building revs when it gets up to temperature. Air leak somewhere? Or anything else to consider also going to have to rebuild forks... and then splitting the cases on my ktm...aren’t bikes fun ?

Tried the 6th gear trick and hasn’t freed it off so out with the clutch! other issues... replaced the water pump seal, looks like the oil has emulsified again. Hard to tell as it was ATF so red and now is a pink so wondering if I hadn’t flushed it properly. Head o rings done at same time so can't be that. Potential engine case corrosion? and finally the fan! Doesn’t seem to be kicking in, it definitely works and I had stator rewound fairly recently. When I take the wires off the thermo and touch them together it starts the fan and kills engine so assume there’s a wire wrong somewhere? (Has loads of fun sorting wiring when I first bought it as it was an absolute shambles) hope you’re all enjoying Quality time with your bikes during isolation!

Will try a new set of pads in, seem to remember it was never great even after the last new set of pads. will try getting some heat into it and the water too. And get back to bleeding the rear... fired it up tonight, first time in about 2 years, took a few kicks to start and then a few to really catch properly and then ran ok. Clutch isn’t engaging which isn’t unusual for a techno and the fan doesn’t seek to be kicking in but it’s a work in progress...Assume there’s nothing to be done about the clutch? Just a techno fault...?

The front or rear? I used a syringe to bleed as I do on my ktm’s, sucking through rather than back bleed as I understand the rear has a ball bearing in so can't back bleed, with the front I could then just pump the lever until bubbles worked up through to top of system

    Beta Techno ‘98

What with this whole isolation thing I’ve dragged my Beta techno out of its resting place at my parents to give it a good going over, I’m normally on enduros but would be good to get it back running. fuel line had gone hard and broken and the water pump seal had gone too so pulled engine out, tidied up wiring, did seals and head O rings, cleaned carb, new fuel etc. Yet to fire up...but I’ve been refurbing brakes, got calipers off, pushed pistons out, they’re pretty clean but but new seals in and pushed them back in, new fluid etc. The front has good pressure but is absolutely terrible, minimal stopping power. Pads are good, disc is good, pressure is good but it just feels spongy and rubbish. Slows you down but not a lot. Anything else to check? and the rear...proving to be the nightmare hat all techno rear brakes are. Managed to get a bit of pressure - can see pistons moving slightly - but not a lot, this was with the whole system off...just a case of keep going with bleeding? cheers!
  8. traced all wires back to stator to check for any breaks (in vain...) and pulled flywheel just now, so i'll get stator off tomorrow and hopefully get it sent off to west country soon! then at long last my fan might bloody work! thanks people
  9. Hi, more electronic issues... just wondering how you can tell if a bike has a lighting coil or not? my bike (beta techno 250, 98 dougie lampkin rep...) doesn't have any voltage coming from the yellow that comes from the flywheel and is meant to power the fan, so thought that since my bike xcurrently has no lights on it I could use the lighting coil to power the fan instead? just can't see any free wires coming from the fly? thanks!

    Engine Mounts

aah good old sine wave! taking me back to my a-level physics days! I now understand why there is a capacitor! had a look on the rs place and lampkins said they'd send me one out to try and I could send it back, anyway what turned up was indeed a rectifier! only problem is the fan still doesn't work! i wired up the rectifier as per the diagram and tried it, still nothing. All connections to the fan are fine and I'm convinced there is a problem with the live from the stator, the yellow comes up seperate from the main group of wires (which go to that large connector in one of the pics) and I know the white/red kill switch wire is live as i accidently touched it today when the bike was running but i can touch the yellow that goes to regulator and rectifier just fine :s what voltage should be coming off it? thanks, yet again! Neville

excuse my ignorance, just seen that one is the capacitor and the other is the rectifier. Just wondering why the capacitor is necessary? since the original rectifier wouldn't have a capacitor across it?

Thanks again neville! Lampkins have got a rectifier in but they said it was about

so is that acting as the rectifier on your bike? Taken a few pics of what my wiring currently is, I think the rectifier has been taken off completely :s first pic. this shows what the wires straight from the fan go to, the 2 black ones are from the fan and the green goes to an earth at the cdi(?) green earthing at the other end of the connector, the green again goes to an earth at frame, as does one of the blacks from the fan. The other wire from the fan goes down to the thermo. this is the wire up from the stator. you can see the yellow wire in the background not going to this connector but to the voltage reg. then this is where the yellow from the stator goes one way to the voltage regulator and splits the other way (blue - excuse poor wiring at moment) which should go to the rectifier.... so looks like recitfier is missing right? thanks for your help!

    Techno Fan

Thanks for the reply, that sounds similar to what I've got so far, from fly, splitting one to 'rectifier' one to voltage reg. Only issue is i have no idea what the rectifier looks like, has anyone got a pic of theirs?? think that may well be the missing link... there is a connector that the 2 fan wires go to which is just loose. could that be the rectifier?? Thanks again!
