  1. Hi Guy, Theres 2 in each of the legs of the swingarm (assuming you mean the ones that the swing arm pivots on and not the ones the linkage plates go onto) On mine at least these were a caged type bearing rather than the full compliment ones in the dogbone/linkage - I would think again its just a case of looking/feeling for any free play there - while you have the linakge all apart its not much more work to remove the swingarm to check and regrease/replace as needed, make sure the bearing sleeves are rust free as I would think they will eat the inner seals - I took a dremel with a brass brush and gave them a good clean up, came up nearly like new and should help the seals in the longer term - looking at the seals and the fact they are quite well out of the way of any direct abuse I would think these bearings probably last some time - Plus I cant see theres anywhere near the load applied to them that the dogbone bearings see, so if they feel ok they probably are I would guess. Id say whatever you do its worth pulling the swingarm pivot bolt and checking/cleaning up and sticking some antiseize of some sort on there as it passes through a couple of steel sleeves in the engine case as well as the 2 bearing sleaves in the swingarm - being steel itself its likely to rust in place - this is a common problem with the XR250R that I ride and its a similar design to the Mont... I'm sure people with some more experiance will clarify things though.... Cheers Ben
  2. Hi, I cant speak for the rest but so far Ive found the Montesa to be fine to find parts for - Im sure others will be along to vouch for the other makes
  3. All done Feels like a new bike, maybe 2mm free play now at the wheel rather than over 10, also has a totally supple and squeek free rear end now - problem is now I'll have to re-learn my balance as it feels totally different... Front end next as theres a bit of play somewhere there - not starting that until after the weekend though Better hope it runs after I rebuilt the carb too - too late to start it up tonight! Cheers for all the replies. Ben
  4. Yeah sorry Im probably panicking other nothing in general here, just want to get it right so I dont have to do this again for some time! Now heading down to the garage go get on with the refit.... Mark1984 I had seen those but wasnt sure the normal ball bearings would be up to the load placed on them, but sounds like they are holding up for you - if I have to do these rollers again I may well ask how yours is going....
  5. ok having just removed the seals, another question on a similar theme... the writing on the bearings, facing out on each side or out on one side in on the other? I done the dogbone with the writing out on each side (which was my interpretation of the manual), but on the linkage on the swingarm that the guy has done for me ones in ones out....?!
  6. Yep maybe, I dont think I will be either, just the pro clean stuff and a carefull hose
  7. Cheers, I'll redo the ones the engineers have done I think then (as flat side in on the dogbone that I did) From Wherry's experiance though it doesnt seem to matter a great deal...
  8. Cheers, weird one huh - I did have a look at the manual it does almost look as if flat side is inwards on the diagram but I couldnt be sure either way.
  9. Im hoping the dogbone is correct - dont have to remove it all again and clean up and regrease etc.... the swingarm is sitting here so I can do that easily....
  10. Cheers - The seals on mine seem to all be rubber (guessing theres metal inside somewhere) flats out/swingarm correct or flats in/dogbone correct?
  11. Hi All Really quick question hopefully as I have to get my swingarm etc back on tonight if I can ready for the weekend. When I took the bearing seals out of the dogbone they all had the flat sides inwards ie next to the bearing and the lip/ open side facing out... I had to take the swingarm to have the linkage bearings cut out as they were totally collapsed and rusted in (there was nothing much left of the seals on the swingarm so I dont know which way around they were), now when I got the swingarm back (from an engineering place) the seals have been put flats out, I asked and he says thats how they are supposed to go. A little worried now as Ive put the seals back in the dogbone as they came out ie flats in and its greased up and back on the bike. So which is wrong? The swingarm that the engineers have done or the dogbone that I have done (copying from how it was when I took it apart) Either way now that they are in how easy are they to get out again and put the correct way - I dont have time now to buy new ones and fit them in time for the weekend. Cheers Ben
  12. Quick update, stripped the carb down last night and cleaned everything up with carb cleaner - generally in pretty good condition however the choke assembly seems a bit knackered - there was dirt in the spring assembly which means its got past the tiny o-ring that seals the shaft - so I'm guessing it could have been sucking air in throguh there as well, all cleaned up now and its pretty worn so for now I'll put it all back together with a new o-ring on the choke jet and try sealing the choke assembly with a bit of grease on the shaft and under the lever - if that cures it then worse case it will be a new choke assembly soon - about
  13. ps the splatshop website seems to have a decent amount of parts, I'll have to get an order in (need oil etc anyway) they have the offending O-rings for 49p Cheers Ben
  14. Cheers Wherry, I have downloaded the 2002 handbook which has a lot of info so Im sure will be helpful, according to that 110 main is standard but a 35 pilot/slow is standard so it has a slightly richer pilot jet in it it seems. It also specifically mentions checking the choke jet o-ring for wear/damage so I guess its a common thing, I may have a spare in my o-ring set but I think it could be a bit smaller than what I have. Yep - I have a can left over from the rebuild I did on the xr250, that and various little needles and bag ies etc for cleaning jets - although the pilot jet on this does seem tiny not sure I have anything small enough for that but carb cleaner and compressed air should sort it all out hopefully. I'll have a go at checking the float height as well while its all apart Cheers Ben
  15. Cheers, yeah I found out tonight just how badly placed the oil plug is! not entirely sure how you check the level so I'll give it another look tomorrow - didnt have a lot of daylight when I got home (dont have lights in the garage a the moment).... The bike started up from propery cold tonight on choke and didnt rev as high as it has been so I think it is a bit clogged from sitting but I've pulledthe carb anyway. I was surprised how quick and easy it was to get the carb off once Id figured out how to remove the throttle cable - my wife walked up at that stage and asked if that big spring was actually meant to be on the outside Checked and it is a black throttle tube so sorted there... Jet wise I have a 110 main, 36 pilot and the clip is in the 3rd groove on the needle counting down from the flat top looks like the needle says 37 on it, havent checked the adjustment on the screws yet but will count them in and remove them tomorrow. Theres a bit of wear on the little shafts that come out of the floats ie a little flatened but not too bad, apart from that its really nice and clean inside although once the fuel has evaporated its left quite a sticky oil residue, Im wondering if it is just a bit blocked from sitting unused for a while with fuel in the float chamber....the only other thing I noticed is that the o ring on the choke jet which seals it into the bottom of the float chamber is quite flat on one side not sure if that would cause an issue - anyway I'll give it all a cleanup tomorrow hopefully, get it back together and refitted and get some fresh fuel before I put the fuel tank back on and start it again. sorry for any missed letters or spaces - using a wireles keyboard tonight and it keeps playing up - correct what I hae noticed....
  16. Cheers wherry I'll give it a look I was wondering how easy it was going to be removing it! I did a carb swap on the xr250 a couple of months ago and that was tight and it's a much larger bike. ... Re the throttle I haven't checked but the guy did say it had the black slow/learner throttle on there but I will take a quick look while I'm going over it. Cheers Ben
  17. Ok thanks Wherry, Re the side stand personally I would have quite liked one - Im getting used to not having it when Im at home and I can rest the bike on the garage or just get the paddock stand out - but I can see it being a pain at a trial having to either rest the bike somewhere or hold it all day - may look out for one on ebay that someone has taken off.... I'll add a carb strip and clean to my to do list may have a go at getting it off at least tonight - will I need any gaskets though if I start pulling it apart or are they re-usable? If I post the jet numbers up would you/someone be able to tell me if they are the correct sizes as a starting point (think I may have a different carb on an '01?) Theres a chance the bike may have been a bit warm still when I started it but it had about 4 hours in the back of the car to cool down from the 10 minute run I gave it when I picked it up so I would have thought it would have been pretty cold by then - but even so I wouldnt have expected it to rev like it did.
  18. The boots are as tall as any of the trials boots people had at Stuston (a lot taller than my road bike boots) and pretty heavy duty leather and water proof etc, hence the thought - but fair point - I know whats on my (early) christmas list then Cheers Ben
  19. Great thanks Wherry, I went out to Corton yesterday (I was in Oulton Broad anyway) to have a look to see if I could see where the area was, if I was in the right place it had a gate accross a little track so didnt want to nose about will get it booked and go back though once I get a rack etc sorted out. I had heard there was somewhere in Wrentham as well but didnt know anything much about that one - will have to find out once I'm sorted Sounds a good plan, I'd certainly be up for meeting up sometime if we can all arrange it - wouldnt mind someone else who knows 315's checking that Ive set things up right as well before a proper trial! (I've started a thread in the Montesa section with a load of silly questions in!) Only now can I fully appreciate how difficult some of the sections (that a lot of the riders where making look very easy!) actually are going to be, I'm going to look a right idiot at the first trial I go to all kitted up (the guy sold me his trials trousers/top/gloves and a helmet) and falling off all the time! Just need to get some decent boots at some stage but for now I have some army boots which I'll have a go with I think. Cheers Ben
  20. Caddabs - Just seen your second reply, cheers thats the exact stand I have (expect mines zinc plated) bought it for the XR250 about 6 years ago and its still going strong although dont use it very often as that bike has a side stand and never needs any work really. The Mont doesnt have a side stand - not sure if they do as standard and its been taken off or whether its an add on but either way I'm glad I had the stand (especially when I got it home and had to lift it out of the boot of the car and put the rear wheel back on)....
  21. Cheers 1) Good that'll do me then, I have a silver plastic can somewhere that I used to use for premix for the generator - if I can find that it will do the job and saves it getting mixed up with the various other green/red ones I have for the cars. 2) Cool, I just sorted out one of those squeezy bottles for measuring the oil out so looks like I was onto the right idea even if I wont need it if I buy that oil! (it was an old bottle that had some pond treatment in it - thought it would be ideal for the oil) 3) I'll have to take the chain off and give it and the sprockets a good clean up and get something a bit thinner I think - dont think the chain is stretched etc it seems good just neavy with grease 4) Cool, I'll see what I have spare in the garage and buy what I dont have over the next couple of months, I'm sure I have at least one spare set of allen keys, and proabbly a spare set of metric spanners, just bought myself a small range 3/8 drive torque wrench a couple of weeks ago (to tighten up the bolts on my plastic inlet manifold on the car - didnt fancy cracking that!) so hopefully sorted there I do like to have a set as it where of tools dedicated to a bike or whatever so I know where things are at least for the commonly used tools, at least that way when I go out I just need to grab the right toolbox, the fuel can and load up and get going, otherwise I'llworry that I've forgotten something Seen a gauge on ebay I quite like the look of, hadnt really looked at pumps just figured with the low pressure (although I guess theres still quite a volume of air in there due to the tyre size!) I may get away with a bike style pump - will look into whats available then... 5) The montesas location sounds similar - will have to see what others say about the switch nature of my choke Fan goes on and off so Im pretty happy with that, will check the coolant while the tank is off as well, and also check the brake/clutch fluid levels and clutch/gearbox oil level, I'd planned to just check that for now while Im practicing at home and replace it before I do my first trial (I assume the cluthc and gearbox share oil, havent looked yet and I assume theres no filter in there they just rely on changes for clean oil) Yep no worries Cheers
  22. Hi All Thought I'd split this thread off from my thread in general as Ive now bought the bike and have it at home I've spent some time searching on here and found answers to most of my questions but I still have a few. Im totally new to trials, and obviously new to the bike as well, so I have some dumb/basic questions (sorry!), I'll be getting a towbar and rack soon hopefully so I can take the bike out to a few of the trials around the east anglia area. 1) How much fuel will I need to take to a trial, ie can I get away with a plastic 5 litre can of premix or shall I buy a metal 10 litre jerry can? was also wondering if the fuel would keep better in metal anyway? Also do I need to use super/97 octane? 2) What
  23. Hi all, Got the 315 back home, just ended up taking the rear wheel and mudgaurd off and the fuel tank and laying it in the back of the car, would have gone in without but wouldnt have been able to close the boot All seems ok, wheel bearings, fork seals etc look ok although I think it may need the rear link doing as there is a bit of play up and down when its on a stand. I'll continue that part of the thread in the Montesa section though after some seaching first as I have some general questions about chain grease/tension/bar positioning etc.... I was just wondering apart from the trials listed on the Eastern ACU site are there ever any practice days/meets? I've had a bit of a go at home for an hour or so and I'm starting to get the hang of balancing it while standing still although I can only manage 20-30 seconds at the moment and I think Im moving more than I should be ie Im constantly correcting it each way but I think I'll get it I can ride it at a crawling pace in a straight line but can only manage to do about a 90 degree turn in the (7 foot wide at a guess but with fences and things to fall into if I mess up) private road at the back of my house at the moment so I think I could do with a bit more space to try some turns etc before I can tighten them enough to do it happily at home, I need to get some oil now to make up some premix before I can do too much more as its nearly out of the fuel that was in it when I collected it Cheers Ben
  24. Cheers guys, I spoke to the seller last night, he has all the tools there and has no issues with taking the bike apart with me to get it in the car so thats a plus, the bike has had recent bearings and fork seals etc and the tyres are fairly new as well so I should be all set, hopefully will turn out to be a good deal for
  25. Saturday was a good day if a little confusing for the first time - Im guessing you dont have to do the sections in order as there seemed to be people doing the later sections then coming back to the earlier ones etc - I guess with that many bikes its the only way to do it in a sensible time though, and there seemed to be some of the better riders going back round and riding the easy routes as well - guessing it was more of a practice day? I am a little worried that Im going to be laughed off the course the first time I show up though! there seemed to be all levels of riders there though.... In other news all being well I'm going to pick up a 2001 315r with the later brakes and forks etc at the weekend... Current plan is to drain the fuel out and bring it back in the boot of my car (mk3 mondeo hatch so a fair amount of space) may need to remove the forks but should be doable?? Either that or hire a van.... Then I need to get a towbar and trailer/rack sorted out but I plan to get some practice in round the garden first, practice my balancing and general control - I have a flat private road down the back of the garden where I can get used to the bike (plus side is I ride my xr250 standing up 90% of the time so needing to stand shouldnt be an issue), and once Im a bit more used to the bike I have a fairly steeply banked garden with lots of steps and grassy slopes - depending on how loud the 315 is I should get away with a few laps round the garden as long as it doesnt tear the grass up.... Cheers all Ben
