  1. I have a 1995 GAS GAS JT160 and lately I have been hitting the top of the power band in the lower gears while riding in sections. I feel slower then most bikes even the newer 125's. Theres also this what I like to call no go period where the power doesn't kick in for almost a half turn of the throttle. It was never ridden in competetion by its first owner. My boyfriend rides in the Advanced class and he even says it seems unusually slow. It has a 10 tooth sproket in the front and I was thinking about changing it to an 11 tooth. Should I even mess with the gearing?

  2. Gosh it is hard to give a quick lesson on such a HUGE topic..... 99% of your dabs will come from a turn. Think of these points individually. Everyone has a better way of doing it

Subtle movements (don't try to be a gymnast)

Shoulders horizontal (drop a shoulder and you will dab - this is the SINGLE (!!!!!!!!!) most important line to say to your self)

Turn your arms and not your shoulders (If you turn your shoulders you bum will swing out to counter the shoulder movement - causing an imbalance and a dab)

The bike leans in to the turn a little (shoulders horizontal)

From standing upright - bend your knees a little and lean the bike against the inside leg

Look at where you want to go not at the problem 100mm in front of the tyre

Teach a friend these rules and get them to critique your style. My wife does it all the time.... "you dropped your shoulder"..... yes i know honey, I'm sorry, forgive me.

Practice, practice, practice this until you cry. Practice figure 8's on the flat. Practice around a few bricks. Practice on a hill. It is all i did for months as a beginner.

Thanks! I've been trying to do most of those things but I guess its all mind over matter and trying to get my brain and my body to corporate. But don't worry my fiance is making me do figure 8's and circles til I fall over dizzy or run out of gas and fall over whichever comes first. ;)

  3. It encourages new starters at events....

:agreed: Say we count all dabs up to 5 and a new novice rider 5's EVERY section wouldn't that be discouraging? I've seen some sections where guys have taken more than 3 dabs but they were trying not to but especially in water sections it is very difficult. They rules are fine as is. Believe me my future father in law and I have had talks about the rules, he likes the old rules of no stopping in a section and what not.

  4. I've just been wondering how/what got you started in trials and when did you start?

Well mine is a bit unique to say the least. My first official date with my current fiance was at a trials event. He had me scoring a section with him and his father and told me that the pros were coming up the rock I was on but failed to tell me just how close well I was about a foot away from their boots lol. And I've been hooked ever since =)

  5. I agree with copemech start out with hiking boots thats what I did and they worked rather well esp when I was scoring a section and didn't fall and break my leg while trying to get on the tallest rock there. But I have the same problem my calves are huge (along with the rest of my lower half  )I just hope the pair of alpine stars I ordered arnt too bad.

  6. Well I'm kinda sorta new on here and never actually introduced myself, I know how rude! I'm newer to the trials world I've been learning for about 5 months I believe. I'm currently riding a 94 175cc JT160 GAS GAS. I do not compete just yet but I hope to in the near future I want to get better with my turns which I royally suck at at the moment. I've finally become more comfortable with rocks but those darn anthills still defeat me.. I will get my revenge one day.. But any way back to Earth.. I hope to make some friends on here and hopefully learn some new stuff.. :D

  7. For us guys - I believe the boot size on the Gaerne boots is very close to shoe size.....I have no idea if the boots available has womens sizes or if you will have to find out what the equivalent mens size is for your feet. I have very wide feet and all motorcycle boots are tight on me as no one makes a boot in a larger widths. I have to wear very thin socks with my Gaerne boots to make it possible for me to wear them until I can stretch them out a bit.

I did try on some motocross boots at a local motorcycle shop and they were horribly stiff and I am not sure how well the sizes relate to the available Trials boots - but it would certainly get you in the ballpark. Ryan Young Products is located about 1.5 hours away from me and I eventually just drove down to see them and tried on the boots at is shop.

Well there's nothing where I live the nearest motorcycle shop is about an hour away from where I live and they have little to no trials gear =(

  8. Ok I'm new to the whole trials world. I need to get a pair of boots since I will be competing in the near future. I have no way to try on a trials boot before I buy them. Should I try like a motocross boot or an enduro boot to get a general size? I want to get alpine stars if that makes a difference.
