  1. I have, as a 'last resort', managed to remove a TY250 mono using 2 hammers (1 in each hand) striking the outer-rim simultaneously. The resulting 'shock' was enough to free the taper. TAKE GREAT CARE TO STRIKE TOGETHER THOUGH!
  2. Hi Rich ..... I have to agree with jimbo349 Fit the chain; mark the link; cut to length; ride the bike. Workshop manuals are great for reference but they aren't the be-all-end-all.
  3. Hi guys & Gods, I used my '85 mono to set a lap time for a friends Vintage Enduro the other week and long before I'd done the 15 miles I was having terrible gear change problems: sometimes false neutrals, other times it wouldn't come out of gear changing up or down. My impression was that it was getting too hot (ie. didn't like the non-stop use). The oil - as always Motul 10/30 Semi-Synth - was brand new two days prior. The clutch has since been stripped, measured and pronounced "as-new". Anyone got any ideas or had similar trouble. Thanks AL p.s. my legs are too old for 15miles of continuous standing .... I was cream crackered!
  4. Hi fergie. Do you mean the 'source coil' of the CDI magneto? If so, the book says to disconnect the CDI magneto lead and measure across the BROWN + BLACK terminals in the connector. This should be 240 ohms +/- 10% as you mention. BUT .... you also mention the small (low tension) lead and the High Tension lead too, so this makes me think you mean the ignition coil! In which case the Primary coil is only 1.0 ohns +/- 15% and the Secondary coil is 5.9K ohms +/- 15% I'm no auto-electrician but the picture in the book appears to show measuring from each terminal to ground. Hope this helps.
  5. sorry mate - I don't know the numbers but if you measure the bore, OD and depth of the old one and enter them into the boxes in this link http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=1 to Simply Bearings, you'll get the part numbers required.
  6. Don't hassle yourself with a loose-ball set, get these [ http://www.tytrials.co.uk/trailandtrialsuk/prod_42854--16-amp19-Taper-Steering-Bearing-Kit-TY80.html ] from John Crane
  7. Well guys I reckon I'm not meant to get one of these because each day this week I've been late home from work and too late to phone Sammy Miller ... until today that is ......... and they are CLOSED!
  8. There IS another, more complicated way but I don't think it will be strong enough. Used metal putty to fill the hole completely; place the casing back on and use a drill (same size as the clearance hole in the case) to 'spot' the center again. The drill out with tapping drill (5.2mm if M6 thread) and re-tap the hole. It might work but I don't hold much hope in in being strong.
  9. Hi Lewis. What you need is a 'helicoil'. You'll also need the appropriate helicoil tap and helicoil insertion tool. I'm assuming you don't know what one is. If you do, then sorry. A helicoil looks very much like a compression spring only it is threaded to accept the original screw. The stripped hole is tapped out (larger) with the helicoil tap; the helicoil insert is then placed in the tool, which then inserts it into the newly tapped hole. Once in place, you wind the tool backward to snap-off the insertion tag and then continue to wind the tool come all the way back out. Job done. To be honest, unless you have lots of stripped threads - or intend stripping more! - it may be cheaper to find a local engineering firm to do it for you. It'll take them all of 10minutes to do.
  10. scratt, You're a STAR! Thanks for the info AND the part number! I get the feeling that Miller's website mustn't be up-to-date because the cat I've just downloaded has Venhill cables on page 13 and chain tensioners on page 14. I entered the part number you listed and their search tool came up blank. It's looking like a phone call to S.Miller Products is needed after I get home from work. Thanks once again.
  11. I've ordered their catalogue on-line but meanwhile I've downloaded it via pdf and all I can find is on page 33 TY250 Twin Shock Tank/Seat Unit (not pictured) ............. but that's twin-shock, not MONO. Am I looking in the wrong place? Also it doesn't mention price. The photo online doesn't say "twin" or "mono" - just Yamaha TY250 - but it looks very neat and is
  12. Hi searay175 ........ thanks for replying. I've already 'skinned' the tank with fiber-glass and resin (spent humongous hours on it) but alas all to no avail. The tank was a mess thanks to the previous owners attempts with a flap-disc grinder!! I'll just have to wait my time until something turns up. It's not stopping me from using the bike ........... it just looks AWFUL! Cheers Alan

    TY250 mono

Hi guys. Bear with me as I'm new to forums and probably not the sharpest tool in the shed! I have a TY250 mono (1987) with plastic tank. As you all know (as do I now!) plastic tanks can't be painted without blistering at a later date; so my question is ..... what other TY tank (steel/alloy) if any, will also fit the mono? Is it a straight swap or are mods needed? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
  14. Got mine from JK Hirst. Original Venhill Superlight .......... and it IS!
