  1. I don't know, things were different back then - there was less money in the sport back then, I guess and the WTC was in it's infancy - so people would have a crack at it, down to the Club expert rider who'd turn up on a Bult 325 on the back of a Ford Capri, as long as he had a relevant licence to compete

A good example of that sort of camaraderie/competition 30 years ago, IS today's Scott and SSDT trials that still capture that essence of the sport of Trials

SSDT & Scott - Money isn't in it, there are no TV rights - a good club rider can get a new bike out of a crate, run it in and start alongside a factory works rider on a trick bike.............they can ride the same section, one route and the club rider can at the end's cards record the same score as the factory rider perhaps

That's the sport, that's the craic and that's why it's so popular and over-subscribed year on year

Joe Public can compete alongside their sporting heroes, if they so choose

One route, one man, one bike and winner takes all

Compare that to some contrived, super human sections in WTC, that only 15 of the world's top riders can manage, because they ride everyday to attain that skill level on supertrick bikes

That formula is becoming boring, even an avid trials rider is starting to find watching it, so boring

Perhaps we will go full circle, who knows

30 year's ago a British round of the WTC was like a Scott or SSDT, it was one man, one bike and one route - but although the sections were harder, even a club Expert could put in a decent ride on his home turf and live the dream of riding amongst the best in the world....... that day

Sadly that is no longer true today in WTC and Trials is for that....... a lot poorer

Ah yes, that was me in the mid '70's to mid '80's 'til our kids started arriving !

Having had my interest renewed by my son and an old twinshock, we went to a local trial. I came back in quite a confused state, I couldn't believe how complicated the sections were with so much choice - clubman .........expert routes etc ! The riders were doing all sorts of things which did not compute, from virtually lying on the ground stationary, stopping with their feet down. Non of whom were scoring a five.

There was a lot of clever youngsters stopping and jumping/hopping with their feet up and then roaring up unbelievably slippery banks from a standstill, which was very impressive and way beyond anything I could ever have attempted in my younger days!

The easier routes looked fine for my abilities on a twinshock back in the day.

I was an expert in those simpler days and thoroughly enjoyed rubbing shoulders with the Rathmells and Lampkins at the odd national and British Championship round and riding or attempting the same sections and comparing you results with theirs, which could be quite humourous !

I watched the first video and stayed with it only for 5/6 minutes because I know that I couldn't ride such sections now or then. Whereas, I always had a belief that I could in my day. Although I would still allow stopping with feet up only, anything else must have forward movement.

My other observation is that the new style bikes seem very awkward to paddle out of a section, I have a vivid memory of seeing Martin Lampkin plowing out of a section sitting firmly on the seat of his Bultaco once he had had three dabs in a muddy section. (St David's Trial I think).

  2. @Taff4 - actually cash is an issue so the second one would be good to have go. The gearbox scares the crap out me tho'. But Peter does supply new shafts which is great news. TLs are pretty rare here. Is Brigend in Scotland?

We (that's the Royal we - my Son) has spent quite a lot so far and we still have some way to go, I think we are up to

  3. posting on your own post - is this like talking to yourself?

From above all done but both engines need cases spilt - No.2 for gear stuck reported else where.

No.1 - sucking air into crank - also reported elsewhere.

    I'll talk to you !

We are in the process of stripping the engine, can't get it to run. The small and big ends are gone, needs a rebore and it looks like someone has chiselled it apart at some point in its life !

I can't find anyone to do the rebuild, so have decided to buy some pullers and tools and have a go and would be interested to ask how you are going to deal with your two ?

  4. 2 300 models are in the UK on the Jotagas stand at Telford.

They look ace and even better in the flesh. The frame is beautifully tig welded and has a gorgeous shine to it. Each component looks well designed and beautifully made.

It has a new brake lever from the Milan show version.

It's a tiny bike. The engine is tiny with tiny fixings assembling it. It's almost dolls house stuff compared with the size I'm used to.

Nice special levers, anodized spokes and mudguard stay.

Only vulnerable bits are possibly the plastic that is next to the chain adjuster, won't the silencer get so hot that the plastic on the rear box melt?

It's hard plastic so it'll be ok I'm sure. The factory would have rectified it if it melted I'm sure.

It's got a Dellorto as well. I much prefer this to the kick in power of the fi on the Ossa. To sharp for me , I need things to happen slowly.

It's a lovely bike and in my opinion looks better quality to the gasser and beta. This along with the exclusivity and the Tarres connection , gets my vote

I agree, saw it in Telford yesterday.

The quality of the components and construction was aircraft quality, it was certainly far ahead of the BETA, GAS GAS on show and the Montesa next to it.

Is there are a top rider on it for this Country ?

  5. Tube and rimlocks fitted fine after some swearing and sweating on this cold day in the garage. The tyre is made in Thailand and is quite stiff but will do for the moment.

'Not for road use' in the USA.

  6. There is a tubeless tyre on the rear - 'Vee Rubber - Trial Benissimo'- Made in USA. Never heard of this make but the question is; are there any problems running this with a tube and will standard rim locks work ?

    Many thanks.

  7. Just removed the rear wheel to replace the wheel bearings. I found a short 'sleeve' rattling around when the spindle was removed.

So, should there be a full length sleeve between both wheel bearing inner races ?

Has anyone got a photograph of the rear wheel set up ?

    Many thanks !

  8. Heyup Taff4

Fitted an electronic ignition to my 320 and all points woes now gone - it works very well - managed to get another one working "over the fone" for a nice chap I met at a local trial will shortly be installing one onto a Jumbo - hope its as successful..!!! pm me if interested

    Stu

    Oh yes, sounds very interesting.

We are still trying to get ours running reliably, my endeavours last weekend resulted in a sheared woodruff key. My Son ordered replacements from Rotax which, as normal, the posty takes back to his depot because we weren't in. Hopefully, the 48 hrs noted on the card means 24 and will be available this morning !

If you could share the info. I would be most grateful, we want to be riding reliably as soon as possible instead of doing a lot of spending and swearing !

    Andrew.

  9. Plug gap about 25 thou.

Yes to how you adjust timing, though not that critical.

Timing mark on casing at about 11, by screw hole, and faint mark on fly wheel is there if you look, hard.

To connect an external condersor, disconnect existing and remove or isolate, join wires together, pref solder and insulate. Mount a new condensor by coil and connect black wire. I use a VW one from Euro car parts which has 2 connectors and a bracket which makes it easy. If you want the part no ask. Bultaco UK also do one thats suitable.

Martin seems to spend a fair bit of time away so not always an instant answer.

    Thanks for that.

I have a spare condensor, with a single cable.

So, link black cables together that were connected to existing condensor. This black cable comes from the ignition coil through to the insulated side of the points.

New condensor - mount up top and earth to chassis or coil chassis, run cable down and connect to the same insulated side of the points ?

  10. I have trawled through the SWM threads and have come up with the following;

    Timing 2.6/2.8 BTDC

    Points Gap - 0.4mm

    Plug Gap - ? Help !

A few other questions - How do you adjust the timing, do you need to slip the magneto off and move the back plate and refit the magneto and check. Are there any timing marks to point the strobe at ? Ours seems to have some cold chisel marks on the backplate !

How do you connect an external condensor ?

The only wiring diagrams I have found are in Italian and a bit difficult to read the colours etc.

Finally, not getting any e-mail replies from Martin Matthews. Is he on holiday ?

    Many Thanks.

  11. You will have to take the left hand casing off, having first removed the gear lever & kickstart, to have a look.

Only thing I can think of is the mechanism attached to the casing has moved, its a plate with a lever that rotates on 3 ramps which (normally)disengages the clutch.

To drain the gearbox oil take out the allen key on the sump, NOT the hex head.

    * (worth making a cardboard template to make sure you put the screws back in the correct places as they are different lengths )

All in order with the mechanism inside the cover. The clutch spring retaining plate was on the wrong way around, adjusted it and removed two springs, it now seems to have good smooth movement. The case has been damaged by the kick starter and is leaking oil all over the place, though !

    Thanks for your help.

  12. Help ! Just got our new/old SWM 320 running but the clutch seems to be disengaged normally and engages when the clutch is pulled in. What's going on ?

I can cope with the heavy operation but it is tricky to ride with that configuration !
