    Spark Plug Torque

thanks everyone, i'm looking through the old posts for most of the information i need and it really is helping but their are just a few things that kind of contradict themselves, so i prefer to ask than make the wrong decision and do damage, the tips on riding techniques i have found have been a real help but bike repair and maintenance is a different thing and can be very costly for the sake of waiting for a few hours for some one to reply to a post.

    What Is This

thanks for the advice but i am a complete novice and so my first thought was to bung something into the hole and carry on cleaning around it but then i thought will i do any damage in doing that, so being a carpenter for over 30 years, experience as tort me, if in doubt leave it and ask someone first, i cleaned everything else except for that area, i thought afterwards it would be better next time i clean my filter and air box to take the carb off and clean that at the same time. regards Tony

    What Is This

the first photo and the yellow arrow, is it the rear break fluid, and what are the clips called the red arrow is pointing at, i'v noticed today that my fuel pipe is held on with zip ties so i want to replace them and in the second photo, what is it and what is it for, does it look right or should their be a cover over it, i was also looking at things like the nuts that hold the head on, can i buy them in sets, just to tidy it up a bit. regards Tony
  7. I'v just gone to go out on my bike for an hour and the wind nearly knocked me of my feet so i decided to have a better look at my air filter and oil change instead, the air filer is very easy to get to, just an allen key, i don't even have to cut the cable tie, just take the bolt out and lift the rear mudguard over to the right and it's there, nothing hard and fast, the air box comes off with one size socket and a screw driver so i can clean it better, i now know where to put the engine oil in but i'm not sure which bolt to take off to drain the oil, it's on the left hand side on the newer bikes but i couldn't see it when i looked, i will have another look, i'l find before it goes dark.
  8. i have ordered some filter oil from off the internet, i'm getting my engine oil from a bike shop in town today and i will probably know what you mean copemech when i actually get my air filter off, i think i have to take the back mudguard off, to get at it, which looks like one 6mm bolt and a cable tie so i'l let you know how i get on.
  9. thanks , yes it's a two stroke, i forgot to ask the best way to clean my air filter, i have looked on the internet and you can buy two spray cans, one is a cleaner and the other is air filter oil, is that the way to go or is their a better way.
  10. I have managed to clean my carb, change the plug with out any problems but now I want to clean the air filter and I don't know how to get to it and also I want to change the engine oil but don't really know what oil to buy, any tips would be great, the bike is a Sherco 250 1999-2000.
  11. i thought i would start where i left off, 30 years ago, how wrong was I, it's back to basics for me, i can't agree with you more about using one finger for the clutch and front break, after about ten seconds of riding yesterday, i pulled back on the throttle just a tad to much and off it went, front wheel in the air and i was just about to fall backwards and i managed to pul the clutch in but i nearly ended up flipping it, i had a idea in my head what i was going to do when i got the bike but that as changed now completely, in fact i am not planning anything now i will just go with flow and take my time, my only plan is to try and make it to my first trial meeting around april-may, that should give me plenty of time to get the more basic things down, thanks for the advice, i'm glad i came across the site, it's already been a great help. regards Tony
  12. i was given a wooden box to sit the bike on so this morning i put the choke full on, put it in fourth gear, pulled the clutch in and rolled the bike forwards and backwards a few times then lifted the bike onto the box, got myself in to a comfortable position and give it a good kick and brum brum, first go, i couldn't believe it, i ran it for a few minuets and then took it out for a bit of a run, after that first time i could start it from just standing on the ground without the box and no choke, i had no idea how powerful trials bikes are now, i would say that this sherco 250 as more power than my bultaco 350 from years ago and this morning i tried first then let the clutch out slowly and it was off so i tried second and it was very much the same, to tame it down a bit i kept it in third and just road on the flat because it all seems strange at the moment, i'v got to get used to the bike before i push it a bit, at the moment i can do about 40 minuets and everything starts to hurt so i will have to build it up gradually but i am really happy with the bike and glad that i chose a trials bike to get fit with, thanks everyone for the help.
  13. thanks i stand a better chance now but like you say, it would still be best to give it a good clean out, really thrilled with the bike and it has been well looked after. regards Tony
  14. i think you are going to like this, i saw the c on what i thought was the choke and i have only been turning my petrol off, c for close, you have got to giggle, just imagine me going at it with no petrol getting through, so any way to save any more embarrassment, where is the choke.
  15. thanks for the reply, i'l get on that tomorrow.
  16. Hi guy's, i'v done a search first but can't find anything to help me, iv had a second hand 1999-2000 250 sherco and when i went to pick it up, the previous owner kicked it over and it started after about 4 kick's but that was from cold and i think it's stud for a bit, i got it home and i tried to start it but couldn't, now then, i had cancer a few years ago and since then i have not been very fit, i'm basically out of shape and so i do put it down to my fitness and technique and after about 10 mins i did start to get the feel for it, every bike is a little bit different but just wondering is their something i'm not getting right, like have i give it to much choke and flooded it or should i keep the choke on and not worry about flooding it, basically if their is anything you can advise me i would be grateful, also i thought about bumping it, just to get it running, is it possible to bump it or will i just be wasting my time trying, i would contact the previous owner but he is on shifts and i don't want to bother him at work but i will have to if i don't have any luck tomorrow, thanks guy's. reagards Tony
  17. thanks, i like the sound of having fun, i feel very lucky to have found a bike that i was looking for at a very good price and with the boots being the right size it was haunting me, no matter what other bike i looked at this one kept popping back into my head, i have not followed the progress of trials bikes and it has been 30 years since i have owned and rode one so when i started to look for one and most of them where water cooled i was amazed, they reminded me of the yamaha rd lc i had and that was around the same time as my trials bike but it certainly makes a lot of sense, i am like a kid waiting for xmas, not to go into details but i have had a really bad 4 years and i have been stuck in doors for most of them so this is a big thing for me and i hope a turning point.
  18. Hi Les, i didn't mean to say that the bike was stolen, i meant really how do you know if a bike is stolen but in a general way not pointing the finger at you, i do apologise if i have offended you, i should put my head in gear first before i open my mouth.
  19. sorry i forgot to say, i live in the uk.
  20. thats why i put, i like the newer machines and prefer to ride them, i know their is no comparison, in fact we would be wrong to compare them, they both belong in their own place, but as a project and a hobby i would like to have something similar to the bike i used to ride but at the same time maintain and ride my sherco, best of both worlds for me but not for everyone.
  21. just wondering how old does a bike have to be, to enter it into a classic trials, i ask this because although i like the newer machines and prefer to ride them, I would love to buy a bultaco 340 from around the 80s as a project, i used to ride one about 30 years ago and loved every minuet of it. regards Tony
  22. HI guys, i introduced myself a few weeks ago, i was originally having a bike after Xmas but i saw this sherco 250 for sale just £700 and couldn't resist it, it comes with size 9 boots, helmet, gloves and a bike rack, the type that fits on top of your tow bar, what i need to know is with the bike being an off the road bike, what documents should i be asking for, i should hate the thought of buying a stolen bike, although everything seems genuine, i have only put a deposit down, until the 10 of next month, photos of the bike, boots and helmet below.
  23. Hi m8, l have only just joined the site and don't have a bike yet, i'm a little out of touch, i have been looking at montesa myself but the only thing that puts me off is a friend of mine had a montesa but it didn't seem to have much grunt but at the time i was on a bultaco 340 so could of been used to something with a lot of power, could you let me know how yours handles and also how much should i be paying for around about the same year. Regards Tony
  24. thanks everyone, i'm from burton on trent, you have been a great help, i will keep you informed. regards Tony
  25. Hi everyone, i have not yet got a bike, i will be having one after xmass but i need some information first, i'm 51 this year and keep thinking may be i'm to old so i could do with some of the older members input about age, also things have moved on a bit since i had my last trials bike, it was a Bultaco 350 about 30 years ago so i'v been looking at Gasgas, Sherco and beta, they all look very much the same so any information on them would be great, good and bad, an important thing to me is how easy can i get parts for my bike and how easy is it to fix myself, also Montesa look the part, so anything on these four bikes would be a great help. Regards Tony
