Hi Dave, Excellent. See you there I'm #18 Thanks Dale

    247 Fork Oil

Finally got time to look at this. I drained the oil by pumping the forks as you all suggested. It only had 100ml in the left hand leg and 75ml in the right hand leg. No obvious huge leaks on the seals so I guess somebody was playing with oil levels in the past. I have charged it with 200ml in each and it feels much firmer, Have a trial next Sunday so will see what it goes like/ Dave, regarding the carb over run / rich mixture. I am still having issues. It still takes about 2-3 seconds to get back down to idle after a hand full of throttle. I replaced gasket on the carb along with the o rings on the idle and air screw. Also flattened off the carb outlet flange and fitted a new o ring there too. Doesn't seem to have changed much. I am largely suspecting the crank seals again as I did not get a full charge of oil out of the clutch side although I know there are a couple of places that the oil gets stuck behind in the casing, Running fully synthetic oil at 40:1 and still a very black plug. The main bearings sounded fairly noisy but I forgot to check for any play so I might strip it down again and see what play there is. Thanks Dale.

    247 Fork Oil

Thanks for the replies. I will take the bolt and and push the forks up and down. You can never have too much oil on the floor!! How much tension on the top nut is there. As in will I end up with a hole in the garage roof when the last thread goes?

    247 Fork Oil

Hi all, Am I right in thinking that if I undo the drain bolt near the bottom of the fork in the picture it should allow the oil to drain out? I have undone both sides and nothing comes out. I guess this means there us no oil in them or is there some other reason nothing comes out?
  7. HI Graham, looking good. After doing my crank seals it still smoked a lot at first. Running 25:1 Putaline synthetic and after a couple of hours of running at the weekend it no longer looks like the red arrows have been through the section. I had to tweak the carb a lot on the idle speed and air screw after replacing the seals, I guess this is a good thing as it must have been gulping air in before. How much engine noise do you have? Did you try turning the crank by hand when you had the primary gear off? Mine sounds awful. Someone had a listen to mine when it was running but said its fine just a bit of piston noise. Must just be the way things were back then... It looks like I have my front mudgaurd on back to front too. It was that way when I bought it though, honest!
  8. I used the impact driver on tge flywheel nuts etc. The shock helps it along. I did see the remnants of o rings on the bolts. I read somewhere that the main crank cases but not sure why they are needed on the clutch cover?
  9. Spent the weekend replacing crank seals so no practise this weekend. Joined another club and have a trial/training session on Sunday
  10. M7 would be hard to find I'm sure. If you haven't got one get an impact driver. All the nuts came off easy and I used it to tighten the puller on the primary gear and it came off in seconds☺
  11. They were M5. Got loads of stainless ones at work.
  12. Replaced the crank seals. Tuned up the carb and now when I twist the throttle the engine goes faster instead of dieing. Got a trial booked for next Sunday to see if it's any better. Happy days Thanks for all your advice, especially G!
  13. Thanks G, just bought some pullers so its all systems go for tomorrow.
  14. Hi G Thanks for the info and the link to the post. I've ordered up new parts and got both cases off ready. Just need to rip it all apart. The left hand side has been done at some point as there's lots of instant gasket around! Still going to try and get the flywheel and drive gear off again. I have a couple of questions though. What torque did you use to put the nuts back on again? Did you take the clutch off? If so is as simple as undoing the nut and pulling it off the shaft? Thanks Arfur
  15. So now I can get the covers off I am looking at replacing the crank seals. I have searched for any instructions on this but have only found little bits and pieces. Has anyone got an advice before I start?
  16. Got the bolts out but the heads are knackered. Hopefully have something at work that will fit. I was assuming they would be special or rare bothfeetdown! Why would it be easy?
  17. Hi Dave, It was indeed the trial at Corton that I went to. It was a bit of a step up from the one I went to at Santon. I had a look around and decided I would go straight past section 1!!! Looked at 2 & 3 and watched lots of people do 2 without too much difficulty, then went for it. I almost made it to the top of the last climb but ran out of power and stepped off. The bike made it half way back down, I on the other hand made it all the way down!! I then missed 3, and went round to look at 4 and 5. By which time it started properly raining, I recognised a couple of people that were good at the last trial and saw them fall off in 5 so decided that was enough. Chatting to others there I found I was not the only one to retire early. All credit to you if you completed all three laps. I have come out more determined to master this trials lark but realise that I have a lot to learn. The next training session with the Dabbers is not until Sep / Oct time as I asked on Sunday. If you get an opportunity to get out somewhere then please do let me know as the only way to learn is to get amongst it. Thanks Arfur
  18. Ah! I thought there would be some fixings behind there. I will give them a little gentle persuasion, failing that I'll drill them out. Then it looks like I get a nice little storage area....
  19. Thanks to all for the replies. The ones up north are a little too far to travel so I will give Milton Buzzard a call tomorrow and see what I can get sorted. I'll let you know how it goes.
  20. I am trying to check the crank seals but the two screws on the small cover on the left in the picture have been butchered. Does anyone know what is behind that cover? I am guessing another bolt for the main cover at the very least. Thanks Arfur
  21. Hi Ourian, Thanks for the replies. I spent the morning searching for training places and never found either of these. Milton Keynes is about an hour away so sounds good. I have emailed them for more details. I will try the trails center in March again but he is very difficult to get hold of :-( And didn't know of any practice places at all. The routes were not colour coded but they have additional gates for the harder routes. So I was doing the easiest route possible but they were all very difficult, especially for a beginner. Thanks Arfur
  22. Hi all, Can anyone recommend a training center? I am new to trials and can find nowhere to practice so I have to enter trials to learn. After my first one I learnt so much and was confident and looking forward to the next. However when I got there the weather was rubbish and the sections were huge. I crashed on the first section I tried and then retired from the trial knowing I did not have the skills required for the conditions or difficulty of the sections. Even people I saw clear every section on my first trial where falling off!!! So I need to find some training so that I can restore my confidence and learn what to do properly. I live in Cambridgeshire but can travel anywhere, well within reason. Thanks in advance
  23. And how it looks right now!!!!

    Fuel / Oil Mixture

So done a bit more research and have stopped look for the reed valves. Still a bit unsure why there is so much pressure coming back through the inlet even with the exhaust off and plug out!!! Looking at the manual I found there should be 200cc of oil in the clutch and 300cc in the crankcase. There was nowhere near enough oil in either!! Again the manual says SAE20 for the clutch and SAE90 for the crankcase. Does anyone know the modern day equivalents or recommend an oil that I should use? There was also loads of oil in the exhaust which could explain why I looked like one of the red arrows during the trial. Did manage to break the inlet spacer between the carb and the block during reassembly, not happy, but as it wasn't flat on both faces there could well have been an air leak there.
