  1. OK that's odd.  Splatshop shows the same magnet working for both the Jitsie and Leonelli kill switches.   I have a Jitsie on order but when I was riding last weekend I swapped bikes with someone and I swear he had a Jitsie kill switch.  We both noted right away the lanyards we had on our wrists from our own bikes wouldn't work on each other's bikes because the magnet repelled.  But now I'm wondering if maybe he had another brand (Apico?) and he just replaced a frayed lanyard with a Jitsie lanyard.  Or maybe I just misread his lanyard and thought it was a Jitsie when it was something else (Apico?).

The guy I swapped bikes with is on these forums (Zippy).  So maybe he'll see this post and chime in on what kind of switch he has.

The Jitsie replacement I ordered should be here today or tomorrow.  So I'll hold off and try it for myself once it's here before ordering a Leonelli spare from the UK.

    Thanks!

  2. I just fit a lanyard style kill switch to my GasGas. It's the Leonelli version. I want a spare lanyard / magnet just in case I lose or misplace it during an event. The place I got it did not carry spare lanyard / magnets. I haven't had any luck finding a spare sold in the U.S. I ordered a Jistsie spare but the poles on the magnet are reversed so it doesn't work.

Anyone know somewhere in the U.S. that might sell the spares?

    Thanks!

  3. FWIW, I just bought a GG as well (2014). I was told by the dealer to run it on a mix of race gas and pump gas, specifically because the GG will run very poorly on straight pump gas. Before you go crazy trying to jet it, you might want to give that a try and see if it runs better.

For what it's worth the guy I bought it from said he ran it on 50/50 race gas/pump gas and it was still way too lean in the idle - 1/4 throttle range with the gas he left in the tank. Where are you at? What elevation and weather conditions? How's you're bike run in the 0-1/4 throttle range? I ask because I'm worried that I have another issue I'm missing because I'd be very surprised if it was delivered it that lean from the factory.

  4. When the temps get above 70F I might put the #3.5 slide back in and see how it runs. If it's still lean I can give the 48 pilot a go.

My trials club got together last weekend for a little practice and I ran the bike for about 4 hours. It ran great and never missed a beat with the #3 slide and needle lifted 1 position.

  5. Sorry I left out the main jet.  It has so little effect in the throttle range I was having an issue with I didn't mess with it at all.  I editted my original post and added that info.

I'm in Michigan.  So I'm about 900 feet above sea level and normally it would be very cold here but we're having quite the heat wave.  So the days I spent jetting the bike were around 62F/17C.

I did try a 48 pilot.  That alone made it about 10% better.  But it was still surging and knocking and it was too rich at idle unless I really opened up the air screw.  If I opened up the air screw to get the idle reasonably lean then I was back to the exact same amount of surging, knocking at partial throttle that I had with the 45 pilot.

All my testing went as I expected with one exception.  I put a JJG needle in which should have improved that area (off idle - 1/4 throttle) but it had the opposite effect.  The knocking and surging was much worse.  I'm having a hard time understanding that one.  I need to go back and physically measure the needle against the JJH I had in there originally.  My only explanation for that results is either maybe my supplier gave me needle not made by Keihin and the straight diameter isn't exactly right or perhaps when I installed it I got it caught up so it wasn't seated correctly.  Because I know I was lean in that throttle range and the JJG should have definitely richened it up or in the worse case scenario had no impact in that throttle range.

  6. I picked up a used 2014 250 Gas Gas a few months ago.  I've only had it out for a serious ride once.  It was surging, stumbling, hesitating and knocking  pretty badly from just off idle to 1/4th throttle.

I spent a few days jetting the bike but would like to know if anyone else had a similar issue with this throttle range?  I cleaned the carb thoroughly.  I sprayed WD40 around the base gasket, reed block, carb boot, etc to rule out an air leak.  But it would be nice to know I'm not the only that had this issue with the stock carb setup.  If I am the only one, while I might have fixed it buy fattening up the mixture in that range, but I really need to go back and figure out if I have another issue.  If I'm not the only one, then I don't have to look any further than the jetting changes.

Just in case I'm not the only one having the issue, hopefully this might help someone.  I tried different pilot jets, needles, slides, etc and here is what runs the cleanest for me.  First my bike was original setup like this:

    Main: 125

    Pilot: 45

    Needle: JJH

    Needle clip position: 3 (center)

    Slide: 3.5

    Air screw: 1 turn out

Here is what I ended up with:

    Main: 125

    Pilot: 45

    Needle: JJH

Needle clip position: 4 (needle one position higher/clip one position lower)

    Slide: 3

    Air screw: 1 turn out

It seems to run significantly better in the just off idle to 1/4 throttle range.  The slide made the largest improvement and fixed 90% of the issue leaving just the slightest stumble right at 1/4 throttle.  Raising the needle cleaned that last little hesitation up.

  7. I'm new to trials and am just learning to balance on the bike.  I'm a mountain biker and road cyclist and I thought it would be easy for me since I can balance on a bicycle pretty easily but it's completely different and I'm struggling a bit.   I think I'm doing something fundamentally wrong.

I recognize when the bike moves too far to one side an needs to be corrected.  However when I try to shift my weight to the opposite side it actually moves the bike further in the direction it was already going.  It's Netwon's third law in practice.  So for example, if the bike starts to move right, I'll try to shift my weight left.  To move my weight left, the only thing I have to push against is the bike, so that pushes the bike further right and it falls over.

So how exactly do you shift your weight left without shifting the bike further to the right?

    Thanks!

  8. Speaking of GasGas water pumps, I just picked up a used 2014 GasGas TXT PRO 250.  I've heard the water pumps are considered wear items.  I suspect the one in my bike is original.  Should I replace it preemptively or should I wait for it fail?  How many hours are people getting out of them?

    Thanks!

  9. Thanks for the input. Yeah it's not a big deal and I'm sure I got it into the realm of reasonability just setting it by ear.

Biff - thanks, I'd like to say it's good to be back but sitting on the beaches in Hawaii drinking lots of rum sure beats all the snow shoveling I've done this week! The temps are looking awesome for next week. Any plans to get out and ride?

  10. WHY?

As I explained in the original post, I tore my carb down to clean it.  When I put it back on, I just wanted to put the tach on temporarily to set the idle.  Yes, I can set it ear but it would be nice knowing it was set close to what the factory specifies.

  11. I'm new to trials and recently bought a 2014 GasGas TXT 250 Pro.  I had a plugged pilot jet so I tore the carb apart and cleaned it up.  I set the idle by ear but being the analytic type, I was curious what the idle speed was.  I have a cheap trail tech tach/hour meter (see the link).  You just wrap a wire around the spark plug wire and it picks up the ignition firing inductively.  I've used this on my 4 stroke KTM successfully.

I put it on my GasGas  just temporarily to see where my idle was set.   I set up the tach so that it would expect one ignition event per revolution (i.e. two stroke).  The tach picks up a signal but the RPM is off.  It hovers around 3840 and then drops to 2400ish when I rev it which seems quite odd.  I'm not sure if there is something odd about the GasGas that's preventing the tach from working correctly.  I'm curious if anyone has sucessfully used one of these cheap tachs to read the RPM of your GasGas.

  12. we rode yesterday due to the nice weather. had a blast! even got doc_d to jump into the lovely flint michigan water system. :D

Yeah, it was a good time!  I learned quite a bit and am starting to get comfortable on the bike.  If my stream crossings keep going like that I'm going to need to work on some of my swim strokes!

  13. Thanks to Biff, who helped me find a bike locally, this 2014 Gas Gas 250 Pro followed me home yesterday.  I've only ridden it briefly.  I think going with the 250 was the right decision.  I need to ride it more, but i might even need to put the slow throttle on this one.

  14. I rode dirt bikes as a teen, road bikes in my 30s.  Now I'm in my mid 40s and have been racing road bicycles and mountain bikes for 10 years.  I've always been fond of trials (motorcycle and bicycle) and recently found out there are some active clubs here in Michigan.  So I'm thinking about giving it a shot.  I've been keeping my eye out for used bikes for a few months now.  It's winter here so I haven't had the chance to get out and talk to the locals.  I did chat with one on the phone and he gave me the impression that 250s are great for everyone and 300s are a "handful".  I'm just looking for a second opinion.  Unlike Europe, trials bikes are a little harder to come by here.  There is a nice 2015 Beta 300 available for a good price.  I don't mind passing on it if that gentleman's advice is correct that it would be too much for me, but I want to be sure before because several months can go by before another used trials bikes pops up locally.

    Thanks!
