  1. Does anyone have a solution to stop my rear sprocket bolts loosening off - I'm already using nyloc nuts and loctite. Is the next step split pins or 'R' pins ?? Or do I just keep tightening them up ?
  2. John - thanks for this - it's running a treat
  3. Two questions here :- I have a manual of sorts for myTL 250 but it doesn't give me a float height and as I've just had to replace my original floats which had rotted through, I need this - can anyone help ?? Also - has anyone changed to wide footpegs ? do Hebo pegs or similar fit ? I don't want to go down the route of 'weld-on' parts as the frame paint is in reasonable nick Thanks
  4. Finally got it sorted - it looks like what may have happened is that when the trigger on the stator packed in it damaged the coil at the same time, so both have now been replaced and the bike is up and running again Thanks for all the help (especially from Russell W.) and suggestions from everyone
  5. I definitely have more wires - I have the earth (green) and a red, white and another green (all from one connector) from the loom coming from the stator, I also have another set of wires from the stator (blue, brown and black I think) with a seperate connector whch also goes into the coil and the HT lead which comes out of the coil. All eight wires are epoxied into the coil unit. I forgot to add earlier that it's a Leonelli system on my bike.
  6. Copemech - I had a look at the web link you sent, the coil on the Sherco has an extra 3 wires than the ones shown on the website !!!!! I think it will have to be a genuine Sherco part I also found something very similar on the JK Hirst website for
  7. An update (but not a happy ending with a big, fat blue spark) - got the stator back from being re-wound (we were convinced this was the problem), built the bike back up, connected all the electrics and hey presto.....no spark !!!!!!!!! Has anyone any ideas what else it might be, I've checked all the wiring, the kill switch, a new plug and had the stator re-built - I will check the earth connections out tomorrow..........the only thing left is the coil / CDI unit and I expect it will be f*@&ing expensive - does anyone know how to test one (and unfortunately none of ou pals run Sherco's to get a "shot" of a good one to try out)
  8. Good news - just to let everyone know a new plug sorted the problem out and the bike is running perfectly again.... Thanks for all you help here
  9. Lots of things to look at here - thanks for this everyone........... and here's some more info which these answers have raised The bike was running fine until recently and it still has the exhaust and throttle body restrictors in place I havent touched the green wire - what do I do with it and what does it change on the bike ? I've tried the bike on unleaded and super unleaded and it doesn't seem to make any difference to how it runs (although I can't vouch for any differences in the plug condition) A new fuel pump sounds expensive... surely Montesa (Honda) design them to last more than a year !!!!!! Is there a method for testing them ? I'll check over the things that have been listed here over the weekend and post my results as soon as I have any
  10. I've had my 4rt for 2 months now and think it's absolutely fantastic, but I'm now having my first problem in the shape of a misfire when I open the throttle looking for a bit of power when climbing or getting up a step etc. Basically what happens is, I open the throttle and at low revs / low throttle openings the engine is OK, anything more than 1/4 throttle or so, then I get a misfire which feels like the engine is dying and then it comes back in with a bang (a bit like a 2-stroke when it '4-strokes', or like a bike with a warm engine and the choke partly on). When I ease off the throttle a touch it starts running cleanly again When I take the plug out it's dry and sooty and cleaning it doesn't make any difference to the running The bike starts well from either cold or hot I recently gave the bike an oil change and cleaned and re-oiled the filter (I didn't have a new plug, but this is on order and should be here tomorrow hopefully) I did wonder if I had over-oiled the air filter, so I tried it without the filter and flame arrestor grill - the plug still soots up The plug gap is correct as per the manual The plug generates an intense small white spark when I earth it on the cylinder head (and a plug from my pals GasGas gives a fat blue spark I have read that the bike has a "get you home safe mode" which kicks in if the engine overheats, but the fan appears to be working and switches on and off as I'd expect Can anyone out there give me some pointers as to where to start looking ?????
  11. I pulled the bike apart last night and unfortunately the woodruff key is fine....... I checked all the connections in the loom and they're all OK as well The kill switch is working fine Has anyone got any info on how to test the box/coil ???? I took the thermo-switch out of circuit by connecting its feed wires together and when I kicked the bike over it was generating enough power to start the fan turning so i think the coils on the stator are OK..... somebody please correct me if this is a wrong assumption I measured the trigger figures as per the instructions from the Bradford ignitions website and got some really oddball figures, so I think that may be the problem - watch this space......
  12. We were out playing in our local practice ground yesterday and my pals' '02 290 lost it's spark and died (his highly technical description was it went "Papapapapa...papapa.......papa.............pa ............poot!!") - we tried the usual things that you can at the side of river (check it's getting fuel, check he kill switch, tried a new plug) but nothing, so he pushed it the mile and a bit home ......... Having looked at other posts, I'm suspicious that it's the stator - anyone got any experience of this sort of thing and should I be checking anything else ?
  13. My pal has just bought an '02 290 and it wants to kick back quite violently when he's trying to start it, now, whilst this is quite funny for the rest of us watching, he's wondering how to sort it - anyone got any ideas ? I was thinking that we should be looking at the timing as a first port of call......

    4rt Fan

I'd check that your fan doesn't vibrate madly with one blade missing - it'll be out of balance by quite a bit whaih may damage the fan motor bearings
  15. The new voltage regulator arrived (from Rathmells in less than 36 hours - excellent service!!!!) and it took 10 minutes to fit.... and the fan now works again as it should. I'm off to Fort William tomorrow (not as a rider.......more a hillwalking and beer holiday ) so I won't get a chance to try it out for a week or so but I'm confident it'll be OK
