  1. Cheers lads Looks like the most popular piece of advice is to practice on the flat for a start,so thats where i will start my training. 1600rpm the bike is a 1982 Montesa cota 200 you can see the pics in the twinshock forum. bambam n chunks rest assured the bike is well secured. totalshell is bernie shriebers 'observed trials' a book or a dvd ? Lots to think about and lots of practicing to get in before i venture onto the dirt me thinks Thanks once again for the encouragment and i shall keep you informed of my progress warts and all. Best regards Mark
  2. Cheers works a treat.
  3. Cheers lads One thing i find myself doing is when turning to the right i tend to open the throttle the bike then jerks and i pull the throttle even more and my turning circles are absolutly huge. I can see i need loads of practice. My son has ridden a bit of trials and went out with me this evening for 45 minutes and showed me how to tackle a small hill both up and down which i managed on my second attempt,my first attempt and i stalled near the top. I know 45 minutes is not a lot of time but my left hand couldn't take much more. Cheers Mark
  4. What is your best tip for a new rider other than get out and practice
  5. I have bought a stop switch for my bike and want to make sure im wiring it correctly. The switch is open circuit until pressed. Do i need to put one of th wires from the switch to a earth point so when depressed it shorts the wire from the coil to earth and therefore stopping the engine. Cheers Mark
  6. Not sure iff this post is in the right forum but here goes. Bearing in mind my inexperience riding a trials bike im suffering from really bad handache after about 15 minutes and have to stop and rest them. I work in enginering so i consider myself to have reasonably strong hands but they are quite small and i find the levers quite a stretch. Are there any levers available that are adjustable for reach but still allow the same amount of cable travel ? Cheers Mark
  7. Cheers MotoVintage i will see how it goes on over the next few weeks as there are 3 filters fitted in the fuel line, one in the fuel tap,one midway between carb and tank and one in the carb itself. Looking at the picture of your bike i see it has a front disc fitted, was this standard or did someone fit it as a aftermarket accessory
  8. Thank you very much for all your input. I have stripped the carb down again this evening and as suggested found the pilot jet to be blocked so i gave the whole lot a good clean out again rebuilt and refitted. Result, nice steady tickover and picks up nice and clean without any bogging down Chuffed to bits Thank you
  9. I have tried to set up the carb as described in a previous post but i seem to be struggling to get it right, the bike is a montesa cota 200 with a amal carb. The bike starts easily from cold using the choke and once warmed a little i then close the choke and unless i rev the bike it will stall i have tried screwing in the tickover screw slightly but then engine speed seems to be far too high. Whilst i blip the throttle to keep it running the first little bit of throttle seems to cause a slight bogging and then the engine picks up and revs freely. If i let the revs die and the engine stop the easiest way to restart is by using the choke even when hot. I have started at the basic one and a half turns from fully in on the mixture screw but im not sure which way i should be screwing to do what? The carb doesnt appear to be worn at all so hopefully that is not the problem and has also been thoroughly cleaned. What position should the needle clip be in as a start position. Any advice appreciated
  10. Cheers B40RT Rest assured it will be looked after and only used for gentle pottering due to my inexperience
  11. I thought i would post a few pics of my nearly finished bike,im waiting for tank decals, front brake cable, tank straps and a LH footpeg return spring. Purchased as a non runner 1 month ago i have replaced rear wheel bearings, machined new swing arm bushes from phosphor bronze with stainless steel swivel pins and new seals Replaced nearly all nuts and bolts with Stailess steel Overhauled the shock absorbers Home made stainless steel handlebars New brake and clutch levers New air filter All main parts cleaned and polished I have the original Amal levers in good condition that came on the bike but decided to change them as i will probarbly fall off a fair bit with being new to the sport. Total cost including purchase of bike to date
  12. Could it be slack in the chain,i have just rebuilt my friends 2000 TXT and at sometime the chain has been so slack it has rubbed through the clutch slave cylinder housing and the only time i can see this happening is in the situation you describe i:e back wheel driving the engine. I hope this is of some use Mark
  13. Thank you i will try some and see what happens Thanks Mark
  14. Halfords motorcycle scooter and gearbox oil 10W/40
  15. Is it normal for the clutch to drag on a Montesa Cota 200 as no amount of adjusting seems to cure it.
