  1. Cheers lads

Looks like the most popular piece of advice is to practice on the flat for a start,so thats where i will start my training.

1600rpm the bike is a 1982 Montesa cota 200 you can see the pics in the twinshock forum.

bambam n chunks rest assured the bike is well secured.

totalshell is bernie shriebers 'observed trials' a book or a dvd ?

Lots to think about and lots of practicing to get in before i venture onto the dirt me thinks

Thanks once again for the encouragment and i shall keep you informed of my progress warts and all.

    Best regards Mark

  2. Cheers lads

One thing i find myself doing is when turning to the right i tend to open the throttle the bike then jerks and i pull the throttle even more and my turning circles are absolutly huge.

I can see i need loads of practice.

My son has ridden a bit of trials and went out with me this evening for 45 minutes and showed me how to tackle a small hill both up and down which i managed on my second attempt,my first attempt and i stalled near the top.

I know 45 minutes is not a lot of time but my left hand couldn't take much more.

    Cheers Mark

  3. I have bought a stop switch for my bike and want to make sure im wiring it correctly.

The switch is open circuit until pressed.

Do i need to put one of th wires from the switch to a earth point so when depressed it shorts the wire from the coil to earth and therefore stopping the engine.

    Cheers Mark

  4. Not sure iff this post is in the right forum but here goes.

Bearing in mind my inexperience riding a trials bike im suffering from really bad handache after about 15 minutes and have to stop and rest them.

I work in enginering so i consider myself to have reasonably strong hands but they are quite small and i find the levers quite a stretch.

Are there any levers available that are adjustable for reach but still allow the same amount of cable travel ?

    Cheers Mark

  5. Cheers MotoVintage i will see how it goes on over the next few weeks as there are 3 filters fitted in the fuel line, one in the fuel tap,one midway between carb and tank and one in the carb itself.

Looking at the picture of your bike i see it has a front disc fitted, was this standard or did someone fit it as a aftermarket accessory

  6. Thank you very much for all your input.

I have stripped the carb down again this evening and as suggested found the pilot jet to be blocked so i gave the whole lot a good clean out again rebuilt and refitted.

Result, nice steady tickover and picks up nice and clean without any bogging down

    Chuffed to bits

    Thank you

  7. I have tried to set up the carb as described in a previous post but i seem to be struggling to get it right, the bike is a montesa cota 200 with a amal carb.

The bike starts easily from cold using the choke and once warmed a little i then close the choke and unless i rev the bike it will stall i have tried screwing in the tickover screw slightly but then engine speed seems to be far too high.

Whilst i blip the throttle to keep it running the first little bit of throttle seems to cause a slight bogging and then the engine picks up and revs freely.

If i let the revs die and the engine stop the easiest way to restart is by using the choke even when hot.

I have started at the basic one and a half turns from fully in on the mixture screw but im not sure which way i should be screwing to do what?

The carb doesnt appear to be worn at all so hopefully that is not the problem and has also been thoroughly cleaned.

What position should the needle clip be in as a start position.

    Any advice appreciated

  8. I thought i would post a few pics of my nearly finished bike,im waiting for tank decals, front brake cable, tank straps and a LH footpeg return spring.

Purchased as a non runner 1 month ago i have replaced

    rear wheel bearings,

machined new swing arm bushes from phosphor bronze with stainless steel swivel pins and new seals

Replaced nearly all nuts and bolts with Stailess steel

    Overhauled the shock absorbers

    Home made stainless steel handlebars

    New brake and clutch levers

    New air filter

All main parts cleaned and polished

I have the original Amal levers in good condition that came on the bike but decided to change them as i will probarbly fall off a fair bit with being new to the sport.

Total cost including purchase of bike to date

  9. Thank you for the replys chaps and a extra big THANK YOU to PeterB who hit the nail on the head.

I had lost the ball bearing when i did the engine strip,as Homer Simpson would say DOH

New ball bearing fitted and works perfect

    Thanks once again

    Best regards Mark

  10. I have just rebuilt the engine in my friends TXT 280 but i now have a problem with the clutch and could do with some advice please.

The clutch lever is pumping up until it goes solid just like a brake lever i have stripped the slave cylinder and the piston is moving freely in and out.

I have removed the clutch and cannot find any apparent fault ,the pushrod that runs through the engine is ok as is the button and thrust race in the clutch side.

When i refitted the clutch should i have set the clutch tension springs up or as i have done just tightend them up until they bottomed out.

    Any ideas please

  11. Hello

Im new to trials bikes and trials riding but full of enthusiasm for the classic bikes,im in the midst of restoring a Montesa Cota 200 M29 which im really enjoying,it will not be a concours winner but a tidy example that i will not be too scared of using.

I have just spent a enjoyable hour looking at the pictures from the Telford show (thanks for sharing them) i did not realise there was such an event so definetley on my list of things to do next year.

Never heard of the Merlin in the pictures, anyone care to enlighten me on there history.

As for my bike what where they like back in there time i:e competetive, rubbish anyone have much success with them?

Well im off to play in the shed now and hopefully get a little further on with my build

    Regards Mark

P.S anyone got a airbox for my bike as my mounting lugs are broken

  12. Hope this will serve as a warning and possibly help save you money.

My friend recently bought a TXT 280 2000 model.

When he purchased it it sounded a bit rough but didnt think a lot of it and continued to run it, anyway it eventually seized so one new piston welded, machined, replated bore plus

  13. Hi

Im in the middle of restoring a Montesa Cota 200 M29 and could do with a bit of help,i need to source a airbox inner section as the frame mounting lugs on mine are broken and missing.

I also need to find a supplier for shock absorber rubbers,my shocks are like new but the rubbers in the eyes have perished, any ideas please

    Mark

  14. Thanks Mikee for the reply, not really the response i was hoping for but it really needs sorting so i will have to bite the bullet and sort it for him.

Is there any special tools required other than a flywheel puller.

Any hints and tips greatly appreciated

    Thanks Mark

  15. My friends Txt 280 is making a terrible noise which appears to be coming from the bearing behind the flywheel,is it possible to change the bearing without fully stripping the engine.

    Any help appreciated

    Thanks Mark
