  1. Very nice looking KT! Gollner/Whitlock frame, I assume? Anyway, thanks for your response. As you guessed, I did mean transmission oil NOT engine oil. In the end I used part synthetic 10W40 as that's what I had on the shelf. Seems to be OK but will try the ATF in future. Cheers
  2. Hi there! Does anyone know if Montesa Cota 247 & 348 fork springs are interchangeable, i.e. the same part No.? Cheers
  3. Hi there! Can anyone please tell me what engine oil should be used in a KT250? I don't have a handbook/manual so not sure what type/grade oil is recommended. Many thanks Simon
  4. Thanks guys! Will clean the carb, block the lube inlet stub and check timing and see what happens. Did wonder why the lube stub wasn't blocked when I got the bike but up until now (some six months later) engine has been running fine! Cheers
  5. Thanks for the responses, it looks like it's a fuel related problem. Will give the carb a good clean and put a filter in between the fuel tap and carb. I've fitted additional fuel filters on my other bikes and it's amazing how much crap can get past the fuel tap filter and into the carb. If the crank seals have gone can that result in back pressure through the carb? I ask because a couple of times it has backfired when trying to start it and fuel spills out from the 2 stroke oil inlet stub at the bottom of the carb. Thanks again for your advice
  6. Hi there, Suddenly can't get my KT to fire up. Used to start 1st time every time no matter how long stood or what the temperature was. Now, after several kicks, will only run for a few seconds and then dies completely. Have checked the obvious; nice fat spark at the plug, fuel in the tank etc. There's no 2 stroke oil tank fitted and I have been premixing the fuel using fully synthetic 2 stroke at 50:1 ratio. Someone else told me recently they had problems using synthetic 2 stroke in their kh250 and so I wondered if that could be the problem with the kt? Any help appreciated Cheers
  7. Thanks for the info on the Clarke mfg tank it looks to be a similar shape to the KT tank. Think I'll get one along with some reproduction side panels, which I'll get sprayed the same colour, and save the original tank for when I sell the bike on (if I ever sell it!). Will also try wrapping a bit of mudflap round the swinging arm. Cheers
  8. Just got and fitted the new Falcon shocks. Had to lift the lower spring retaining cups up a couple of notches on the body so the LH spring didn't foul with the chain. This put about 20 - 25lbs extra preload on each spring but that seems to work fine for me.....I must be a bit heavier than I thought (hoped!). Anyway, just glad I had the forethought (for once) to get the shocks made up with the body (cylinder) at the bottom so that the bottom of the springs could be lifted clear. Might be worth bearing in mind for anyone else considering getting these shocks. Cheers
  9. Thanks again Michael for your help It looks like it's going to be pretty damn difficult to restore the bike to original condition like I originally intended. Regular service items like brake shoes, air filters etc seem to be quite readily available but many parts just aren't out there. I know that for some people part of the fun in restoring is tracking down and obtaining the bits you need but when nearly everthing you want has to be made from scratch it can get a bit tedious, not to mention expensive. Anyway, at least the bike is pretty much original and useable at the moment so will just have some fun with it for a while then save the serious restoration as a retirement project. Cheers Simon
  10. Thanks Michael, that's very helpful Will definately check the rims as suggested when fitting the new tyres.....hopefully they're ok as I could do without the expense of new rims and spokes. I take it you are States side of the pond. What's it like getting hold of spares for the KT over there? I see there's a company (BikeBandit), in California I think, that seems to have pretty much all of the OEM parts available for this model. Do you know of any others? Cheers Simon
  11. Yeah, I've got the same problem with the tank on my KT. It leaks whenever the tank's above reserve level. Haven't taken it off yet to investigate exactly where the problem is but the tank does look pretty rusty inside. I've seen decals on that well known auction site quite frequently and I saw someone selling them at the Classic Jap Bike Show in Stonleigh a couple of months ago. Can't remember the name but will keep an eye out for them at the Classic Show in Stafford next weekend. Cheers
  12. Hi there, Looking for help again please. Need new tyres for my KT and just want to check what size tyres should be fitted. The bike has currently got 3.00 x 21" front and 110 x 18" rear. I think the standard sizes are supposed to be 2.75 x 21 front and 4.00 x 18 rear. The wheel rims are D.I.D 1.60 x 21 and 1.85 x 18 front and rear respectively. Can anyone please confirm that these are the right type/size rims, i.e. factory standard, and what size tyres should be fitted? Also would appreciate any advice on which make of tyres to fit - don't plan on making bike road legal so trial use only tyres required. Many thanks
  13. That's good to know, thanks for that. With the pins, the top ones are 14mm dia and the bottom ones 12mm dia. It was just that the bottom ones are noted by Falcon as being 10mm so I just wondered why mine were different? Cheers
  14. Hi. Need to replace the rear shocks on my KT250 and have decided to go for Falcon steel shocks. Before ordering them I would be grateful if anyone could advise if I should alter any of the standard settings. The standard falcon trials shocks for the KT are 13.9" length (353mm) with 50lb/in springs. Regarding weight, I am about 12 stone with kit (give or take). I don't intend using the bike for serious competition riding (I'm not good enough anyway) but none the less would like to get the bike setup as best I can without spending silly money. Also, minor point really, but I notice that the quoted size of the KT lower shock mounting studs (as noted in Falcon product list) is 10mm dia whereas I have measured the ones I my bike to be 12mm. As I say, minor point but just wondered if anyone knows what they should be - or can they vary from bike to bike? Many thanks Simon
  15. Yes indeed, that is a very neat looking bike and gives me the incentive to do something with the spare 247 rolling chasis I've got kicking around in the shed. Would just like to know whether the engine went straight in or did you have to modify the frame much? Cheers
