    montesa cota 348

I have had three 348 Cota engines and 2 of the 3 have been missing the counterweight and have had broken shafts. I would pull the case cover and have a look. My understanding is this a really common issue. The other is the case around the kickstart being damaged from over rotating the kickstarter. Not an expert just my limited experience. Sunny
  2. Got it off. Easy with light pressure from a puller. I did not see any flat washers. Are they "inside the clutch" when I remove the circlip? Sunny
  3. Thanks for the info. I now have three 348 motors (2 with the missing flywheel) hoping to make one good one out of it. Sunny
  4. How do you break the clutch apart? Is there a sercret to compressing the clutch to pull the pins? Or does it come off as a unit? P.S. Is there a workshop manual for the Montesa? I have the Haynes and Clinton for my Bultaco's but I can not find anything more than the parts diagram for the Cota 348 Sunny
  5. Thanks for the info and yes I screwed up and posted in the wrong section the Bultaco page is set up on my favorites. Sunny
  6. I looked in the archives but it did not jump out Oil Capacity in cc's for Cota 348 Transmission Clutch "recommended" oil/gas ratio
  7. Thanks for the info. The photos I found online I did not notice the rear lip/hold down and that made me think it might have been altered tank. Sunny
  8. Is this a factory tank or has this been "made up"? I looked around on the net but did not see anything simular. I got it over the weekend in a batch of parts ...it seems to be raining Montesa stuff lately. Some shots of the other bits that I picked up in the lot. Motor has what seems to be the very common broken shaft and missing fly wheel. It has both side cases in good condition. Too bad the light is missing the body. Sunny

    Montesa Parts?

Thanks for the info. What about the smaller "motor" what do you think it is from? Do you think the 39M would bolt into a 349 Cota frame? Sunny

    Montesa Parts?

I picked up a load of Montesa parts yesterday. Some one replied to my wanted ad I had on the local online classifieds. I was hoping for something that would work with my incomplete 348 Cota but I think that it will not be the case. I have found some part # and serial numbers but not sure. The item I am most curious about is the 39M motor is this from a Cota 304?? Any help with ID would be appreciated. I have posted the photobucket address http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/ii267/9N11948/Montesa%20Parts/ Sunny
  12. Do the air forks have valves like you would find on a tire? If so.. I think the original 348 has them all ready. I think I will pick parts from the new parts bike and finish the 348.
  13. I had an ad on the local online classifieds looking for Montesa Cota's and someone replied with the offer of what I think is 349 Montesa Frame but more importantly a 348 motor which was what I needed to fix the Cota 348 that picked up the is summer that had a broken kickstart shaft and missing counter weight flywheel. It also came with a a spare 348 tank/seat. I think I will try and sell everything minus the motor (it has been powder coated). Are there any other upgrade parts on the 349 that swap over to the 348? Do I need a special puller to seperate the cases or just heat and tap apart? Sunny
  14. Is the top a screw off style?
  15. The bike came with the bag it is mounted to the headlight hardware. I have seen these military style bags on trials bike around here so that you could have some premix oil and spares/tools for longer weekend trail rides. I have three opinions on plugs. This bike has a problem as you might recall no kick start or counterweight fly wheel. Would a hotter spark help with bump/push starting? I will fix the problems properly when I get a hold of the parts and the $ to do it. It must have run despite these problems with the clues I have found while cleaning it up. Sunny
  16. I bought a set of plugs for the Cota Project based on the old ones. The parts guy said that it had been replaced/updated. The "new" ones do not have removable screw off tops, which is required for my plug cap. What are you guys using? Sunny
  17. I got it all buttoned up today. I was able to get 3/16 ball bearings at the local hardware store.
  18. I think either I lost a few ball bearings when I disassembled or they were missing already. What size and the total number for both the top and bottom are need for the head stock/stearing assembly. The plastic "races" are in good condition just short a few bearings. It would be nice to just go to the industrial supply and pick up. Thanks Sunny

    "new" Cota 348

Thanks for the heads up and offer. I think it is too far from home to make $ sense. I have stripped the bike and painted the frame. I should get the photos posted to show the progress. Sunny

    "new" Cota 348

I guess I will wait and see what happens I have post an ad on the local internet classifieds looking for a "Parts Bike". I am kind of bitter about the bike and I feel that I was not told the whole truth either he had never pulled the clutch cover when he owned it or he mis-represented the bike. I guess it could be worse but I hate wasting time and the limited $ I have for my projects Thanks for the tips. I will keep my eyes open for another motor. Sunny

    "new" Cota 348

I am new to the Montesa Forum but have posted on the Bultaco Section often. I picked up a Cota 348 bike for $300 (in hindsight too much) and the previous owner told me that it just needed a new kickstart spring. I love the rush of a new project and the hopes of turning it in to something great. But....it turns out that it has a few more issues than just a spring. The kickstart shaft is broken off and the drive gear on the clutch side is welded in place. As well there is something wrong with the shifter side because I found JB weld Epoxy inside the case. What are the chances of finding the required parts at a reasonable cost??? Seems to be fewer sources for Montesa than for Bultaco parts. Thanks for the advice in advance. I had lots of potential until I started to pull stuff apart. Sunny
  25. I has hoping that someone might have made one already and had the dimensions on hand and save me the experimenting. This something that I can fab and direct the $ I save to other parts etc. Thanks for the tip on where to look for a few suggestions. Sunny
