Montesa 315 98 Jetting

Hi to all

Just bought a 98 Montesa and have some questions:

Std Jet is 120

Pilot is 44

Needle Position is 3rd from Top

The austrian Importeur tells me that this is the standard setting for the 98.

But is this setting OK?

It feels to me that she doesnt run right in upper range. Feels like she gets to much gas. Starting it is easy even without joke (allways 1st kick). Is this normal? Maybe a smaller Standard Jet would be better?

I use 100 octane gas and mix it 1:80 with castrol TTS, Air-filter is fresh cleaned and oiled and the exhaust pipe new stuffed.

Thanks,

michael

you should not run the bime on eneything over 50:1 on castrol tts you might be doing damage to your engine i dought it but it might my bike makes terrible noises on 80:1 tts it specifies on the back of the bottle to not mix over 50:1

t_wimp, just checked my manual (for a 2000 spec) which states "Fuel/oil mixing ratio : 80:1".

I use high octane fuel (Shell Optimax) with fully synthetic oil.

Starting first kick without choke (Joke ist Witz) reminds me of a bike that i owned that had come over from Japan that was running to lean, which would indicate that your carb settings are wrong, i cannot help you any more on this, but i'm sure there are other good owners with more knowledge on this web-site that can, or even find a trials specialist in your area.

Also, i think your bike could be a 99' spec because it has Black fork stanchions (as opposed to chrome on 98's) and Black rear fender (Red on 98's).

t_wimp,

your bike should have a Dellorto PHBH 26CS. The Montesa carb was changed in 2001 to Dellorto PHBL 26BS. The jetting is not the same for these two carbs.

For your carb the 44 pilot is good, the main jet should be 125 -128. This will get you close. The rest will be fine tuning. Are you using leaded or unleaded fuel?

Ok,

Thank you all for your fast help.

beta boy: You are right. I found the same warning on my TTS Bottle.

First I am going to correct my mixing ratio to 50:1 while i'm using Castrol TTS.

Gaff:

Later i will change to some Shell full synthetic oil which will work with 80:1.

The next trial dealer in my area is about 200 km away from me, an the montesa is a very rare bike in austria. The fork stanchions have a strange color -they really look black on the picture, but sometimes they look yellow? (or kind of Titan-color) no choke :-)

Martin Belair:

That's right, it's a PHBH 26cs. So the jetting seems to be nearly allright? I will try the bigger Jets from 125 - 128.

I am using unleaded fuel.

t_wimp, just re-found this web address- www.schwarz-zweiradhandel.de -not sure if he is a Montesa dealer or even the importer into Germany, but he seems to know his Montesa's.

Let use know how you get on !
