nme Posted August 31, 2010 Report Share Posted August 31, 2010 (edited) I've done all kinds of two-wheeled antics and owning a trials bike has been a dream since I was 10. I'm a touch over 30 now and hoping previous injuries dont keep me from enjoying myself. I'm driving to TN. friday to pick up an 04 280 Pro from a friend. I cant even describe my excitement! I've been around two greats of the sport and many occasions during streetbike competitions and shows and it's an amazing sport just as a spectator alone. Chris Pfiefer being one and Geoff Aaron being the other. And they attack ANYTHING you can point to! Friday cant come fast enough..... And hopefully I can find some places to ride around here... Well, I'm off to read up on some tech stuff to help me get myself moving in the right direction. I will post pics after I pick it up. Cheers everyone! 1oldbanjo Posted August 31, 2010 Report Share Posted August 31, 2010 (edited) Well I am assuming the greetings from "NC" is North Carolina.....and you are picking the bike up in "TN" Tennessee. I am in Kentucky and I have learned that us Yanks are a minority on this site. I am slowly learning new words like "Tick Over" (idle), "Pinking" (pinging), "diddy" (small), "No Joy" (did not work), "Tidy" (pristine)..........Thanks to everyone on this site that is patient with those few of us from the US that are keen in trials, most of the people around here have no idea why our trials bikes are so weird looking and why we would want a bike without a seat! I remember seeing my first trials at a local motorcycle club in Ohio somewhere around 1972 and thinking it was a neat sport. I rode motocross and hare scrambles and never had a trials bike. I had been away from motorcycles for nearly 30 years and then for my mid-life crisis I decided to get a trials bike. I am now almost 55 and I have had a trial bike for about 3 years......and I love it. Welcome to the dark side...... As far as these events go, this will be the first time ever on a trials bike. Although, with my experience on all other bikes, I believe I may be able to grasp it without too much difficulty. And with that kind of thinking, I'm surely going to be landing on my head quite a bit. I really cant wait.... I'd like to at least throw a leg over this thing before going to an event. There is a local gentleman here that has some things set up in his backyard and I think he is attending the event that youre talking about as well. I dont even have any sort of proper gear yet. Just street helmets and roadracing boots. The boots may suffice for now but I definitely need a helmet that provides better visibility. I may have to check out this event. I could watch trials anytime and never get sick of it! Also, as far as the lingo, I'm glad you gave me some pointers as I was a bit confused with some of the posts.... Whats a "dab"? nme Posted August 31, 2010 Author Report Share Posted August 31, 2010 (edited) It's a weird story... I met a man at a gas station near work. He was driving an Isuzu rodeo/hona passport pulling a trailer with a trials bike on it. I stopped him and we talked briefly about my interest in trials. I gave him my card and he called a week later to check on my progress. This was two months ago and havent heard from him again. It was in the Fort Mill SC area. I remembered that he mentioned that he had to get his bike to the dealer so he left. Yesterday, in an effort to contact the man, I called the nearest shop in Concord and described the guy and Jim gave me Toms name. I found his number and talked to him today. He doesnt recall ever being in that area. Nor does he tow his bike on a trailer. So there is still a guy out there that I met at the station. BUT, Tom was still very excited to talk to me and we chatted for at least 20 mins in which he had invited me to his place to get some time in on the new unit. This, like many other motorcycle vunues, seems to be full of amazing people. Which is to me by far the best part. I'm in Charlotte, by the way and new to the area. We are supposed to have a beginner training day at Tom's soon so keep in touch with him/us and get in on the fun. I think Tom lives near Shelby, nice guy too. Whats a "dab"? A "Dab" is a quick use of one (left or right) leg to keep you from falling over. The length of time that you have your foot off the peg and planted on the ground really isn't relevant.....it still costs you a point in competition......but it is better than falling over.
