Wheels Powder Coat Or S3 Rim Tapes

Featured Replies

S3 rim tapes would be cheaper, Look great as well. But Powder coated rims are great, I've had some done before and they look very nice, Don't tend to scratch very easily either.

All depends on how much you want to spend really.

s3 tapes are 40 quid how much is a pair of wheels powder coating?

When I had mine done, They cost £150 for both I think, But the trials company who did them also stripped the wheels down completly as well & built them back up.

I've got a price list from triple s powder coating in Bingly, Says the price of what the wheels cost, But you would have to strip them yourself.

Both rubbish - for trials

I had some old rims powder coated for 1/2 the price of the tape!

Rebuilding wheel is easy, just takes a bit of time.

They look like new now, but will probably look rough in a years time.

But, i have looked at s3 rim tapes that have been on bikes

for 3-4 month & they are starting to come off.

You cannot buy individual tapes.

Rim tapes must be the biggest piece of marketing crap in years.

Don't worry silver rims will be in fashion in a few months time.

The voice of reason - well said mate!

The thing i dont link about the rim tapes is that the centre of the wheel looks out of place, If it were me Id get them powder coated and then put rim tapes on!

I use the S3 rim tapes and they are great, they protect the rim from a lot of scratches and nicks, if you have standard aluminum rims they won't show much of a scratch but any color will show the smallest and look bad. I think they are well worth it, very thick material, you get what you pay for. All you have to do is really clean the rim first with something like rubbing alcohol and they will stick well as long as you take the time to put them on right and don't do something like power wash them off. If I got the wheels powder coated or anodised I'd put the rim tapes on for sure to protect them.

Nice Ben,

Im surpriced actually, the stickers and coat looks almost like new after 1/2 season..

*Thanks to chris@graf-fix.co.uk, heavy duty motocross, one of stickers, £40. Great support.

*unfortunatley, the powder coat shop is not alloy specialist..as I now know is critical for "sheet rims", require "acid-ish" coat for perfect adeshion, as mountain bike suppliers are skilled in. Paid ~£40, ok.

Several of my casted rims, std or where wet paint look ok...exposed for numerous of tyre shifts per weekend....calm or in panic...ha ha..Not compareable to trials offcourse.. http://i633.photobucket.com/albums/uu54/patscabinet/04082011003.jpg

Pat, is that a tubeless rim on the rear wheel of your Yamaha?

Hi Shedco,

Yes Im using tubeless set up at my TYR, Morad for GG TXT, great service from Central Wheels.

Perfect- performance and fitting in 1/2 season..Cant understand why I waited so many years..Could not stop my self go blingbling..

Had major probs maintain tyre in place at std DID, good nick though 27y...

Have tested Competition, X11..all "fell out of position"...Ref to Michelin "Competition is made for tubed rims"..based on X1 from the 80

Pat, did the z spokes on the TyR need altering as I have looked

at fitting a morad rim but the diameter looks a lot less than the original rim

Looks like your yamaha has had some serious time spent on it.
