Please could anyone tell me the correct specification (width, radius, length, height, etc) to replicate the low mounted alloy 'trials' version of the front mudguard original to the Sachs engined Wassell trials bikes of the early 1970's ?

I'm trying to restore a bike and photos I've taken off the internet seem to vary.

One supplier I contacted tells me he has over 60 different sizes of front alloy 'trials' mudguard so I need to be more specific.

Hi, I have a Wassell with a sachs 5b engine (not the radial fin head). The tank is bare and I think it has maybe come back from the USA where it may have been a Penton Mudlark. It has orange Petty high guards on it but the Mp forks have the lugs for a low mounted mudguard. I cant help you with the spec for the guard but wondered if you knew where I might get some brackets from and what guard you ended up using? I also have a wassell Bantam with its original front guard (high mounted) which may well be the width radius of the low one.

I have owned a Penton/Wassell Trials bike/Mudlark for a few years. In my research I have never seen a factory stock low fender mount. I believe they left the factory with the high mount and were altered by the buyer. Not sure you can see it in my avatar picture, but I used an aluminum fork brace for my mount. Very slim and works well. The MP forks have the ears on them to hold it also. I have also seen fender brackets that will allow a low mount. Matt Hildenburg (not sure of spelling) carries them.

Victor, if you have the iron barrel motor with a buch head instead of the radial head, you have a 5A. Or you have a 5B case cover on a 5A motor. The case cover has the number plate on it, not the motor.

Tim Wassell has (had) an original Bantam engined bike, chances are the mudguard is the same. Tim has an engineering firm in Burntwood (TJ Wassell) so he might be worth trying.

I just saw you mentioned a Bantam Wassell - it's a while since I saw Tim's bike, I can't remember if it had high or low front mudguard - he's got to be worth a try though.

Just read your post about trying to get hold of low front mudguard brackets. My post is an old one and since then I have not only had a new replacement pair fabricated ...... but then also managed to find an original pair. The originals though are in bad condition & needing welding. When I've had this welding repair work carried out then you'd be more than welcome to have the new replacement set I had made. These are not exact copies though as I didn't have any original measurements to go by ..... just worked from photos of the internet and used steel (not aluminium as they should be).

Wassell offered both a high & low front mudguard trials option from new.

I guess I was thinking about the Penton Mudlark USA version versus the Wassell Bantum. It was the Penton like mine that only came with the high mount front fender.

US/Penton = High Fender

UE/Antelope = Low Fender
