Anybody tried doing an engine swop so as to avoid the crap twist and go thing?

Once my boy has grown a bit more we would like to progress to a proper petrol bike but a medium wheel might be too big for him so I was wondering if I could mod a gasgas boy to a proper multi gear bike??

Any ideas?
