December 17, 201411 yr I have a 1996 GAS GAS JTR 250.I hope this is not a stupid question.I think it is overheating too much because the fan is on almost all the time when it get's warmed up and it spits coolant a little too much for my likingI drained the remaining coolant from the system today and cracked off the cover of the water pump. The water pump propeller spins freely. When I kick the bike over the pump does not move. The bike has 130+ psi compression. My question is this: when does the water pump supposed to spin? With the clutch engaged (ie the motor under load and riding around)? Or simply when the bike is kicked over? Could there be a gear broken? Thanks for your help!
December 17, 201411 yr The pump should spin all the time. It is directly geared to crankshaft! If not, gear or something is stripped and slipping.
December 17, 201411 yr Copemech is correct. The impellor should turn whenever the engine is turning over. Check out this repair video form Jim Snell. Tells and shows you exactly how to repair the water pump. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmSkJCII0fY
December 17, 201411 yr Maybe head gasket blown? /read further, definitely something is wrong Edited December 17, 201411 yr by crazybond700
December 17, 201411 yr Author Thanks! I contacted Jim Snell and he said most likely the nylon gear on the back side of the pump was stripped...:/ How available are these parts and from whereabouts can I get them in the USA? gasgasparts.com the best place? Are they going to cost me an arm and a leg...? Thanks for all the feedback on this site! Very helpful.
