Montesa Cota 247 Specs Need Help!

Featured Replies

hi every body i bought a montesa 247 and its a beautiful machine but im having problem whit the oil-gasoline mix to pure on the bike tank, i wonder if any of you might know the specific mix for these bike ,im using castrol super tt 2t.. and 1/4 of a pint of oil per galon of gasoline,

any suggestions?

that oil/petrol ratio should be OK.

If the tank has not been relined to protect it from the damaging effects of modern petrol, I wouldn't put any petrol in the tank unless you are sure that the petrol you are using has no ethanol in it

Sounds like an ideal candidate for some Aspen 2T fuel -  no ethanol to wreck the tank and sweet running fuel. Much less harmful emissions, just expensive if you use a lot.

  • 1 month later...

The owners manual states SAE-40 at 4% or Finamix 3 at 3%. The manual appears to be for a early 70's model 247.

My Old man runs his at 40:1 has for a few years, runs great. Same for my Bultaco. You 1/4 pint per gallon won't be far from 40:1?

Hi

been running my 247 on a almost daily basis (both sons use it as well) with castrol at 50 to 1 (20cc/ml to 1 litre) for last 10 years without any problems.

Having striped the bike for a redo , seeing the amount of tar like residue in the font pipe , I think I'll try 60 to 1 and see how it goes

does the ethanol enriched petrol increase the build up?

Cheers helm

Hi Guy's.

Jon,

Jon,

Eddie advises  Not to use the ASPEN 2T fuel for  two strokes? as the ratio of oil may not be right.

What he says is to use the 4T ASPEN fuel and mix your own with the ratio of oil suggested for your machine.

I am currently conducting tests, on the benefits of using this fuel in "Classic Trials Bikes" so keep an eye open for the results.

I am chuffed that I can use this fuel in a "Green" polyester tank that is cheap to manufacture, and for the amount we trials riders use it has got to be the way to go.

And it could be the way to get more "Classic" trials bikes back out there ,with the knowledge that if you  use  todays "Ethanol" rich pump fuel you are in for trouble  with every part of the machines fuel and engine system  if you leave this fuel in.

Big subject that could help to encourage more competitive "British Classic Trials Bikes", to get back out there.

Regards Charlie.

Charlie, the Aspen 2t is 50-1, I've been using it in my elderly Stihl chainsaws for a whole season now. It doesn't go off like modern unleaded, (5 year shelf life) or make the fuel pipes go hard etc. But there are two main benefits, firstly the fumes. They just don't give me a headache like chainsawing normally does. (My AJS smells more like a woodburner than a petrol engine.) Secondly in the way they start and run,my old 028 Stihl always took 8-10 pulls to fire up after being left a week. Its now 1st or 2nd pull,no messing. And the little 017 will sit idling for ages then pick up and scream with no stuttering - it has never run like that...

My AJS loves the 4t stuff, first kick starting, steam roller idle and low speed running - but again crack the throttle open and it revs very cleanly.(For a 350 long stroke)

It comes in a sealed clean can,so the fuel system stays clean,no mucky c-ap from the sludgy tankers and garages. It just seems very willing to combust in a reliable manner.

The only thing wrong is how much it costs,I think the retail is about £18 for 5ltrs.(I get a bit of discount) Some people are horrified, but the Ajay used less than 4ltrs for the GV Eurocup over the weekend just gone, which is peanuts compared to how much it often costs to get to and from the trial...

Hi Guy's.

Totally agree  Jon.

This is my thinking exactly,

I have had a very long chat with Eddie Bocquillon, from Aspen, and am currently doing my own test with the fuel.

The results will be on the "Otter" site.

I will probably use this fuel for all of our bikes, including the ones under construction now.

When you think about it hard  , well ,it just makes sense !

Regards Charlie.
