rockclimbg Posted January 10, 2016 Report Share Posted January 10, 2016 The bike is a 1996 BETA Techno. I am not the original owner. The left fork leg has developed a strange oil leaking issue at the base of the fork. I am attaching a few pictures. It is definitely not coming from another park of the bike. I could JB Weld the gap and get the leaking to stop but I didn't want to do anything until I got a second opinion. I have the owners manual but not the service manual which means that I am not 100% sure of how the fork is set up. I attached a few photos. Has anyone experienced this before? redhubuk Posted January 10, 2016 Report Share Posted January 10, 2016 Don't ride that anymore, I believe the lower silver spindle holder part is glued to the lower leg. Looks like the parts are shuffling about, causing that grey paste. birdy Posted January 10, 2016 Report Share Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) The sliver part is screwed onto the black fork tube, with possibly an o ring to seal, undo the mudguard clamp of the the black fork tube and check if loose. If tight strip and check if has o ring, I checked parts diagram but it doesn't show fork internals. As said above the oil looks past its best and will be low as leaking, I have used Dextron 3 Atf as a fork, oil similar to 7.5 fork oil, but much cheaper especially if checking for leak, it also can be used as a gearbox oil as well, let me know how you get on, good luck Birdy. birdy Posted January 10, 2016 Report Share Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) I had a cracked spindle clamp I wanted welding, and it came apart by unscrewing as said before, I couldn't remember if it had an o ring or not, and the great Jim Snell video above, says to that they use threadlock, but he doesn't say if has o ring or not. I think you have nothing to lose if it has just come loose, you may have to use some gasket sealer threadlock etc, and if the thread is o.k just screw back together, before buying a new fork tube. lineaway Posted January 11, 2016 Report Share Posted January 11, 2016 Remove the leg, remove the bottom bolt and take the fork apart through the top nut. The silver piece does unscrew from the leg. The problem is there is a very small set screw held into the threaded part. This needs to be removed or it will strip the threads out. Which they could be already ruined. rockclimbg Posted January 11, 2016 Author Report Share Posted January 11, 2016 Just an update: Took the fork apart and the bottom piece screwed off very easily. The fork was nearly out of oil on both sides! I am going to try to find a small o-ring that will work but I am not hopeful in finding one that will fit.
