  1. I see they have admitted they cocked up last year with the sections being a bit hard and then the rain on top. I did feel a bit sorry for them with the weather last year. But its very difficult to get the right balance if the weather changes.

  2. The spring clip on my AJS is fitted on the inside face, thats how it was when I bought it,so I decided to keep it that way as it clearly works.

See you at the Talmag if I've got an entry - not heard anything yet...

We had to phone up as one of our guys got his unsealed envelope back with nothing in it and the others have heard nothing. There is nothing on the interweb that we can find either

  3. Gautrek, re your chain spit link, try this. Paint the "fish plate" white to make it more visible. Support the handlebars with tie downs from an overhead point. Place the bike on robust blocks beneath the sump guard to lift rear wheel clear of ground. Run bike in 1st, blip throttle to induce oscillations in chain tension while observing split link and carefully observe any potential rubs, particularly adjacent to any frame fixtures, tensioner etc. A thin piece of shim steel inserted behind the fish plate and then peened over both legs will prevent the fish plate legs opening up & becoming dislodged, if it does rub against anything. Good luck campaigning a Panther. You have my genuine admiration as well as the essential large spheroids required.

I will see how it goes this weekend. If its the same I will try the sheet steel idea or I may just rivet it over for the Talmag.

  4. We finally got confirmation that myself and my 3 fellow Taverners members are in this years do. So if you are going down expect to see a Panther being thrown around and at the scenery by me. As long as I can stop it spitting split links out of the rear chain that is. I have moved the gearbox over a bit and bent anything I can see that might be rubbing on it out of the way.

Fingers crossed I will find out this weekend that its sorted.

  5. What makes it worse is that a nice pre unit Triumph has died to create it!!

I don't see how a bike died to create it. its only got a Triumph engine. I'm sure the Gagg family have more than enough engines and bits and pieces lying around to keep making these things. Oh and it goes as well as it looks.

  6. It was me being a knob. Not noticing that the default setting for that site is private. Sorry about that.

I am just uploading some shots from our road trial held on the 21st. There are some very nice bikes in that album

  7. It was the first round of my clubs trial bike series today. For pre 57 bikes. I didn't ride as i am still waiting for my company car and the guys who normally can fit my bike in their van if I am stuck were busy. I popped over to observe.

  8. Well I have had some good news. I popped round my folks today to tell them about the weekend. After explaining about how it still keeps dropping out of gear I mentioned I was looking at fitting a later Burman box once I track one down. To which my dad replied I have one in the garage if you want it. So I returned home with a complete box which spins and doesn't seem in too bad nick. Even my spare clutch fits. I think its a GB box which was made in April 1954

I also got a barn find box off ebay last night for £35. Its rusted solid but that doesn't matter as I only wanted the cases as I need to get a new mount welded on the front as my Panther box has mounting points at 3 and 6 oclock. So I don't mind butchering the ebay cases as they look rough anyway.

  9. What a brilliant day out this was. Much merriment was had in the pub the night before. The weather was about right for this event. I met up with Jon at the start and then saw him a couple of times on the course. Unfortunately my gearbox is still not happy with staying in 2nd gear so all the climbs were a bit much for me with only having first. I span to halt on them all. I have decided that next year I will do the old mans route.

I have also decided I must bite the bullet and fit a later Burman box as the one in my bike is only a medium weight one and I think the low gearing is too much for it. So if anyone knows of a complete burman box with clutch going then let me know. It will entail major surgery on the panther as new gearbox plates will be needed.

  10. I am setting off a 9-45 so will have a while to hang about. I have finally got mine back together and made it down the petrol station and back. So 80 miles should be fine. The good news is the box seems better and hasn't dropped out of 2nd gear yet so I may be ok attempting sheep s*** hill ( or what ever its called) . I did bottle it last year.

  11. Deryk I'm afraid to say I haven't seen Pete for a while. But I don't think he has made much more progress. He has a mobility scooter to get around so he can now at least leave the house when he is on his own. I will pop over to see him soon.

The good news with the bike is that my new springs from Australia turned up today so I didn't need to pick up the newly made ones. I will pick them up later in the week. I got the box back together and noticed another issue. The return springs actually catch on the gearchange pawl spindle. So I have had to knock this out and then file a flat on this and move it round so the split pin clears. This took me 3 or 4 attempts at rebuilding the box before it was all together. But we seem good to go. I just need to stick the box back in and then attach a horn and my tool rack and then we are ready.

By the way my number is 54 if you see me Jon.

  12. Its a British bike 4 stroke only road trial.

I hope I can get a return spring for my gearbox tomorrow. When I was assembling the gearbox last week I got all the covers on and tried the gearchange . it felt a bit funny so i took the cover off to find one of the 2 return springs had snapped. AAARRRGGGHHHH. I couldn't find one anywhere. So a good few days were spent and eventually I tracked some down in Australia . I ordered his entire stock up (4) which cost me £38 delivered. They may or may not be here by this weekend so another plan was needed.

I popped over to a local spring makers last week and showed him the remains. He said yes he could make me some up but they would be in round wire not square. There is a minimum charge and he could me me 4 up for the minimum charge. So I so I said go on then make me 4 . They should be done tomorrow so fingers crossed one way or another I will be mobile again this week.

Oh and the minimum charge I spoke of

Well thats a grand total of £22 for 4.

    What a result.
