Different pistons have different design rings. It's very hard to tell what you have there from your description but maybe one ring is shaped like an "L" in cross section? and the other is not? If the rings are different then the grooves in the piston should be different too - more info needed here
hi when fitting pistin rings to my 199A do they face upwards with the groov in them? allso the thiner off the to goses on the bottom is this right? daft question but im just making sure i know about the arrow on the piston it faces foward. and the rings close on the notices. one other thing is the bike had loads of compretion and ran sweet so will it be ok to put the old rings and top end bearing all back together witch all look good?
hi all im thinking off having my rear wheell respock its got a buckel rim looks ok. and the chrom in the hub looks ok is it worth just having it relined as im having spocks done? allso would it be addviced to have new rim more money i know but will the rim be ok with the new stinles steel spocks?
A good powder coating company should do that for you. they put little rubber grommets in the screw holes and mask up the other threads. Its worth having a good chat with them which holes you want left and which ones you want covered. If the sliders are alloy, have you considered having them aqua bead blasted instead ? When i restored at ty yammy I used this process on all the alloy parts. came up lovely. Hope this helps.
hi again do you mean have them aqua blasted instead of powder coating? oh they or alloy what dose this do to them? ive just finished one bultaco restor have one or to small issues with that one. but the one im doing now is part restoring the bike was runing fine when i stript it ive had the barrol. and head sand blasted. and ive sprayd them just had the barrol heli coiled new leavers .and grips new kill button. and new front spoket.and chain. new cabels all round in blue. as my other bult is all blue thought id have a change with this one so i got new white mudgards with blue fram. oh and new tank. and seat as you can see ive gone crazy
Definately afterwards as powder coating generally involves a good surface preperation. This would jeopardize the seal if it is often shotblast. The powder coating itself involves heat as you have to melt the plastic onto the metal and again this may damage the seal. Make sure they know not to powder coat inside the slider too.
hi guys im thinking off having my fork sliders powder coated in blue id like to know is im allso putting new seals in would i be beter fiting them before i have then painted or do them affter the paint job?
To the "ping-ping noise" the frequency of the pings are linked to the rpm?
While assembling my the engine I replaced the flywheel weight on the clutch side
and mounted a lighter one. The lighter flywheel was NOS. The sprocket had some edges
so the primary chain did not fit well first. After grinding the adgesaway the chain
runs free and without any snappy noise while turning from hand.
Did you probably replaced your flywheel weight too? I would also take the clutch cover
off and take a deep second look. Would also turn the the engine by nad without plug to
see if there is no issue with the primary drive, very curios this "ping-ping noise"???
hi i didnt change the fly wheel weight. the only thing i did chang was the old metel clutch plats for new fiber ones. the bike was runing ok when i firt got it a year ago. im hoping its nothing major just somthing simpel fingers crossed. ill have to take the clutch case off to have a good look. bultaco uk said it could just be the clutch plats its probely only had an hours run since i finished the rebuild. and allso it dosent make the noise when i pull the clutch in
Hello again Chris , i'm not sure about the pinging , i just fit things and forget because there's no problem with them . I'm not pulling you too bits , but you may need somebody local who as better knowledge with bikes , if i lived nearby i would help ....Keith
keith thanks for the offer but i just need some addvice the bike is runing fine now since i fited a new makuni carb im going to take the clutch cover off. and check dont think its major i hope thanks again keith try .and be abit kinder next time please ive done a good job i think off restoring my sherpa affter all it was my first one cheers chris
Are you sure its got the right spindle fitted Chris ????? Bultaco UK know whats what . I think Chris your lacking a lot of knowledge in a lot of area's , and need someone locally to guide you through basic bike maintenance , but its only my opinion ....Keep drinking the stella's Chris
keith ive had i slight pinging noise coming from the clutch case side ive fited new clutch and the bike hasnt had a good run seems to stop when the clutch is pulled in bultaco said its probely the plats didnt make this noise when i first got it so may be the plats just need beding in?

hi keith im still learning got to keep chiping away. i askt bultaco uk they didnt know about these nuts may be your right i may have the wrong spindel did the late bultacos not have the castle nunt. the only bultacos i grow up with was the older ones
hi guys where can i get the rear wheel nut from the nut with slits in it so you can get the split pin in the spindel. ive got a new nut off bulaco uk but its not the one bultacos used to have i hope i can get one from some where can anybody help me please
I would also recommend careful routing, but if your really want a spring for your clutch cable, I would take push springs made out of stainless steel, they look like the one the Yamaha bikes have. Here you are:
If there is not the spring with the dimension you want to have, they can also fabricate (only) one spring to your special needs, (BTW: they are a very good ressource for springs).
hi guys anybody know where i can get a outer spring for my clutch cabel just to protect the cabel from heat of the engin? the yamaha ty used to have one ive look on the net but cant find one or could i make one?
hi all im in the middel of tarting my 199A ive took the barrol off and cleaned and resprayed took piston off to just check it looks ok. theres no damage to the ring but they was easy to get off there was loads of comprestion before is it worth changing them?
when you have got the pin of the spring fitted inside the hole of the kick starter shaft you turn the shaft completly to the left and then hook up the rear end of the spring to the thread rod.
Then secure the rear end of the spring with a nut and the second secure nut made out of plate. At the end of assembly it should look lke this. (the arrows show where the front and rear end of the spring should be located):
for your assembly!hello again takes alot to get your head round but now i think its click. just let me clear one thing up with you when i turn the kick start is it ok to turn it all the way round? this wont do any damage? and then hook the spring on the thread bit allso is it ok undoing the back nut as i think this holds somthing inside thanks bondy
hello all im at loose end im trying to put a new return spring on my 199A but not having any joy. ive got the bit in the shaft now i need to wind the spring so its coiled when the kick start is back so when its free it returns but i havent got a clue how to do this please help
hi the kick start ruber is the one i want in your second photo. the one with the bultaco logo on it seems to keep tearing when im kicking the kick start. i didnt know that bultaco uk did the other typ i will get one thanks for your help bondy
hi all ive got a 199A anyone know what other kick start ruber that will fit? ive had to from bultaco uk and they just keep tearing ive lookt at the yamaha ones they look alot more thicker but its if they fit my bult anyone any ideas
hi all just puting me 199A 350 motor back in the frame just wounderd if anybody knows if any what touqe setin is the cylinder head nuts and bolts? ive got the manual but dosent say
There were various problems with the old style plastic/poly tanks back in the late 70s early 80s.
This was caused by the type of poly used which, as we know allowed the fumes to migrate through the plastic wall.
Modern materials have overcome this as is demonstrated by plastic petrol containers.
If you look at the thread above you will see how I have overcome this problem.
Basically the tank has been lined with a fuel resistant epoxy prior to the outer surfaces being primed, top coated, decals applied and the whole surface sealed with a clear (fuel resistant)laquer. Expensive but the results are worth it.
However I have a new poly tank for my next project and will not seal it internally just apply the decals and then laquer over the decals to stop the spilt fuel seeping under the decal and dissolving their adhesive.
I suspect (but cannot yet prove)that it is spilt fuel not fumes evaporating through a modern poly tank that lifts the decals.
The lacquers used are fuel resistant type that are developed for plastic bumpers.
Hope this is useful.
Martin
hi martin is it worth me buying some decals for my new poly tank?
If the noise changes when you pull on the clutch lever it could be the bearing that the basket runs on, or a gearbox bearing, or the thrust bearing for the pressure plate.
If pulling the clutch lever makes no difference to the noise then it could be the chain tensioner tapping the case.
