  1. I emailed martin sandiford for a price including postage to ireland for a lot of parts which included piston, rings, gudgeon pin, small end, gaskets, rear fender ,spokes and various other items , in all a total of 32 separate items , He emailed the next day with a total , I rang him that evening with credit card details and asked for advice on piston size and he was very helpful . My order arrived 5 days later, oh yea the best part HOW MUCH for the stuff = 200pounds. I must say my experience with sandifords was a good one
  2. Ya I guess your right about not pulling the engine, if I take the carb off it should give me enough of room to fill the hole, I have a couple of gallons of hydraulic fluid that i have no use for could i use that to flush the engine a few times before a final flush wit atf fluid, Anyway thanks for the help and ill let ye know how i get on
  3. yes you are correct, it is a Dellorto vhst carb, I havent done any further investigating into the problem yet, (finishing a 315r project) but as it is the carb can be lifted up away from the crankcase with relative ease. Normally the carb is well supported by the airbox and the inlet to the cylinder, I will pull out the engine and repair the hole , flush it out and make sure i have some clearance when i put it back together
  4. Thanks for the reply, The carb is fine , it has worn a hole through the crankcase and it is throwing out oil when running. I was thinking or wondering should there be something to hold the carb up and away from the crankcase.
  5. hello, I just bought a 03 280 txt pro today, the bike has been seriously neglected, one of the problems it has is that the bottom of the carburettor was rubbing of the crankcase and has worn a hole through it. Is this a common occurrence and what is the best remedy. I have thought of using a chemical weld or getting it welded properly. Maybe a temporary repair untill I know for sure that the rest of the engine is ok. The fan is also wired to run constant , is this ok or should i wire it up properly. thanks

    Piston size

I didnt do anything with my cylinder, mainly because I didnt have tools to hone it and it was in good condition anyway. What was noticable in mine was a fair amount of play or looseness around the lower skirt area of the old piston, When I trial fitted the new B piston in the cylinder it was a nice fit and wasnt tight or loose either , if you know what i mean. Just when I have my 315 nearly sorted I bought a 03gas gas 280txt pro today, another seriously neglected bike

    Piston size

My parts arrived this morning and I couldnt wait to get started on my bike. The B piston was a lovely fit and I had the engine back in the bike in short time with new rings , small end, gudgeon pin , clips and gaskets. It started on the 3rd kick and I now have a nice quiet engine, no more piston slap. I thought I had good compression before , Its got some compression now. I can understand how (dakota) thought he had done something wrong during his rebuild. I have changed the wheel bearings front and rear aswell and replaced some spokes front and rear, washed the muck out of the airbox . Here is a little tip for those of you with very loose front discs. While I had the front wheel off I removed 2 opposite studs holding on the disc and stretched a very small O ring over each spacer and it fitted back inside the hole in the disc , taking up the play that was there. Roll on tomorrow for some garden practice
  9. glad to hear your sorted, Im hoping for the same result

    Piston size

Yes I spoke with Martin Sandiford this morning and after our chat I have ordered a B piston for my A barrel. The difference between them is minute and would suit a barrel that has worn over time. Also I might add that they were very helpfull and good prices

Will a B piston fit in a A barrel, I am ordering my parts today and I will have a chat to sandifords about this
  13. I looked at that aswell, I took the engine out ,there doesnt seem to be enough room

    piston slap

IS THIS CORRECT? I thought A was standard and B and C were next sizes up
  15. I have a 07 peugeot expert 1.6hdi , its a nice comfortable van, it will do 1000 kms on a tank of diesel, the 3 seats are handy, It has 100,000kms on it now and it needs front discs and pads, I would have thought the discs would last longer. It has had a new electric window mechanism fitted recently. Apart from that I am happy with it

    piston slap

To be honest I never put fuel in it, Its still running on the fuel it came with. I think I will go ahead and order the piston kit and hope for the best

    piston slap

Yes A is marked on the cylinder under the inlet, But i think i read here somewhere that i could put in a B because of the wear the cylinder would have. Im not sure

    piston slap

Ya mine was running fine aswell, even when i bought it six months ago I wasnt sure if there was a noise there or not and I have only riden it around the garden a few times since . Good compression , starts on the second kick from cold, Its just that it needs wheel bearings and a few spokes and a bit of loving and that made me have a look inside and I thought I might aswell sort that out now while Im at it

    piston slap

Yes, you are correct. This bike has been neglected big time. While taking it apart this morning I discovered dirt on the carburetor opening after i removed the airbox and the air filter was in a terrible state. While looking closer today I put the piston into the cylinder and there is a little movement on the skirt part of the piston. Also the only markings on the top of the piston are IN and what looks like X7 . Is this the original ? I thought i should see A,B or C stamped on it. Maybe I will just need a new piston kit for it. Thanks for your reply

    piston slap

Hello there, I have 315r with piston slap. It wasnt to loud and only on tickover and low revs. I took the engine out this morning and took off the head and cylinder. The piston and barrel look very good with no signs of any wear, scratches or scores. The gudgin pin is noticably worn and small end has a little play, up and down movement, and there is some movement, very little on the big end. Now here is my dilema, I know that a new pin and small end will improve things but am I risking it by not changing the crank aswell and then if I change the crankshaft I should probably do the whole lot , thanks
