  1. Hi all, been a while since I last posted...

Been watching the indoor stuff on Motors TV and I got thinking, should it be modified a bit to even things out? What I'm on about is that the leader goes last, and therefore has an advantage in that he's seen the other riders and can therefore work the line and get out in less time. I think it's right that the leader should run last, but what about adjusting the section time so that maybe the last rider has a minute, second to last perhaps 1 min 20, then maybe 1 min 40 etc... Or something like that. I'm only saying this from a spectator point of view, perhaps to level things a bit.

Open to the floor for debate...

  2. Hello everybody!

Got chatting to a mate of mine who was wondering why I'd not been trialing over the last couple of years. After explaining to him, I thought I'd let all you TC users, old and new, know what I've been up to during my absence from this fine forum.

Basically, I've got a son who is now 3, hence my absence from my bike. Won't be long till he's riding though... I hope. Anyway, just checking in to say hi.

    Miss you all,

    Boofont.

  3. Sharon Shoestring will get a half million handshake to be the fall guy in all this.

Fall person please, got to be PC! Don't want to upset all the left-wing tw@ts that should be held responsible!

  4. Perhaps should have put this in my other post but you can get a tyre to sit on the bead using a YOU HAVE USED WORDS OR A PHRASE WHICH ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THIS WEBSITE. PLEASE DELETE YOUR POST/TOPIC. DO NOT TRY TO CIRCUMVENT THE FILTERS IN PLACE ON THIS WEBSITE bead ring and a foot pump, I do it all the time this way.

On another note, surely this topic must have been discussed to death before?

  5. Two pairs of mole grips makes the job easy. Front bolts first, not too tight. Then set one pair just wide enough to grip the plate and the frame, you must be able to close the grip so it locks. Next, get the other pair and do the same, set it so it will just grip the frame and bash plate so that you can lock it off. Now go back to the first one which should be loose now, take it off, tighten it and refit. Do the same with the other one and keep doing this until you can get your bolts in. Easy! :)

  6. Aren't they spending all that on trying to sort out the 10p tax rate change they took away.. then put back.. sort of

Well, about six weeks ago when the 10p tax rate change kicked off I read that it was going to cost 2.7 billion which would be borrowed. At around the same time I read that since the huge rise in fuel (and the price has risen moch more now!) the treasury had taken 7 million extra! So, although I'm no maths guru, I can work out that we should have 4.3 billion spare kicking around... So where has that gone then if we have to borrow to sive the rebate?

I'm so angry with this govenment, don't get me started on the expenses thing! :banana2:

  7. I wonder if the cost could be offset somewhat by local business/grants? Lets just say that it worked out to be 150 quid per rider, would local hotels etc offer discounted rooms to riders to offset the price rise? Can the council/tourist office/Visit Scotland etc offer a grant of somekind to buy the one off equipment? Would hire companys hire for free/reduced rates in return for prime sponsership of the event?

After all, without the SSDT Ft William will loose a massive amount of cash as there will be no spectators.

  8. A a member of the Armed Forces I still think the way to go is to try and find other options within the Army/RAF/Navy. I don't doubt for one minute that the avenue being used now is closed but I can assure you that the military is a massive organisation and there are several cross over areas. What I'm getting at is just because one person/area says no, doesn't mean it's no full stop. Also it's worth noting that the Armed Forces changes it mind like the wind. Can't speak for the Army but in the RAF our officers (generally) do just 2 years in a post. New officer in, policy change, just as the dust settles he's off, new one in, got to make change to stamp my mark!

The Army/Armed Forces is missing a massive tool for PR here, use this as a way to open negotiation. As I have said, try to find a high ranking officer who will see the benefits and can open doors, get an MP involved.

Pursue this avenue big time, don't give in a first "no".

  9. What's the point in bending the rules? Granted, the HSE are not likely to drain vehicles but what would be disastrous is if the HSE took a draconian attitude because of rule bending.

In my experience you need to be absolutely water tight on these types of issues and keep governing bodies such as the HSE on side, that is achieved by working with them rather than against them, for example by deliberately ignoring regulations. There seems no point in tackling the issues at stake here with quick fixes just to get another year out of the trial, what's needed is a long term solution.

  10. 6 Up to 275 litres of petrol can be kept in any one storage place without a licence. The allowable quantity is reduced when the petrol is kept in or near buildings, or near public thoroughfares or other flammable substances (see below). In calculating the 275 litre limit, the petrol in the fuel tanks of vehicles in the storage area is included in the total.

What is a 'storage area' though? Could it be argued that when the fuel is at a fuel stop it is being stored? Also, are the fuel stops not (or some of them anyway) public thoroughfares? Factor in the fuel in the cars/vans at the stop which could be anything up to and maybe over 100 litres too.

  11. are we missing the bleeding obvious

the trial is at risk not because the army cant refuel anymore, but because the bikes only carry half a gallon of juice.

additional tank capacity has to be the answer gasgas certainly have larger tanks available all the other manufacturers need to do the same if thier bikes are set to compet and yes the trial itself may have to change with figure 8 routes revolving around petrol stations.. it aint that long ago that it started and finished in edinburgh , nothing should last forever..

Nothing should last forever, that's why small tanks came about, bikes developed and the big tanks got binned as they weren't needed. I avoided posting on the bigger tank issue as it has been mentioned before but I feel inclined to respond to this post.

Bigger tanks are not the way forward. Why? Not all bikes can take them, beta for example. Furthermore, I can't see the manufacturers doing much to change just for one trial. Although the SSDT is unique I'm not sure how much the manufacturers want to support it. Sure there's the big trucks there with a few supported riders but are they not provide via the UK dealer network?

But lets just say the big 4 manufacturers make bigger tanks, what about older bikes, TY's, TYZ's etc? Is that fair? I often question whether or not the bikes with the after market bigger tanks should have been allowed to compete but that's a differant storey.

  12. This is an insignificant point compared to not having the SSDT at all but I'd like to say that riders like me want (NEED) numerous fuel stops.

You planning on doing it again? :wall:

Seriously, Atomant makes sense when he talks about the Army. Here's where I see things.

The Armed Forces are in a serious state. The thumbscrews are getting turned in just about every area as savings are sort. Add to this the relentless pace of Operations across the globe means there is no longer the bottomless pit to support such things as the SSDT. To put things in to perspective I know of highly skilled aircraft engineers that are being employed as cover guards for convoys and drivers, dental hygienists used as helicopter passenger manifest controllers, the list goes on.

I can't see the Army being able to support the event in the same way as before. I believe they may be able to offer their services but they must see some gain for doing it. Money is not really the answer. If the Army feels there is a gain by running it as a training exercise then that might help. If the Army can't do it then there is no way the RAF can, the RAF has far less in terms of resources. However, the RAF may be able to offer help where needed.

Another avenue is to get the Army/RAF/Armed forces onboard by allowing them to sell their product. All the Armed Forces pride themselves of their opinion in the public eye. What better publicity for the Armed Forces that their help has managed to ensure a national sporting event can take place solely because of them? I know thanks go out to the Army but why not get the Armed Forces Careers Information onboard too? Anyone been to an airshow etc? I bet you've seen them there.

Make this high profile, get the backing of some very high-ranking officers or even MP's and you will see doors open. Get the press involved, start banging some drums! It's got to be of more value to the UK and the Armed Forces than Prince William flying his pals to a stag do!!
