Welcome indeed.
I love that this forum links people from all over the world.
Hope you enjoy your stay as much as I am.
Chris.

Well well well the wonders of the internet.
Yes the falling off thing I suppose is part of the fun while learning. I know the more experienced riders still have 'offs' now and then which on one hand makes me feel a bit better about the likelyhood of face planting, but on the other hand makes me think that if they still come off what chance do I have......but I suppose when it's just for a laugh there isn't much to worry about.
-
Thanks for that fella.
It is hard not to get carried away because it's so close to home.
I spoke to the owner last night and it does sound like a well looked after example.
He is a bike mechanic by trade with 30years experience, so I'm confident the rebuild, which he done himself, is of a good quality.
He is a keen trial rider and said that before he does any trail he makes sure the bike is 100% up together.
All in all there is nothing verbally that I can fault. Just need to see it in person and judge for myself really.
If I get chance before work ill pop in to view it and see where that takes me. It seems like a good bike for £995.
-
Well it looks as though the Sherco is looking quite promising.
The breakers yard are selling it on behalf of a customer who is "well into their trial riding".
The breakers couldn't tell me much other than the rebuild was done by their inhouse motorbike chappie, who I am assured is quite competent.
I have the number for the owner so I will give him a bell later and see whats what.
I have seen a lot of topics with people asking about engine size and whats best. With that in mind would a 290 be a bit overkill for a beginner?
-
I may be wrong but I believe I emailed you via eBay about a Sherco you had sold. Is the world really that small?
Thanks for the invite, It would be great to be able to ride with someone. I would like to take you up on that once the falling off is down to a minimum.
Chris.

A lot of good advice there cleanorbust....thanks very much.
Might have a pop along to see the Sherco on Thursday.
Both bikes are situated at a breakers yard. The yard buy and sell bikes and cars as part of their business, but I cant stop thinking that it'll be a bag of nails, just because it's at a breakers.
Hopefully I'll be proved wrong, and hopefully they'll have a bit of info about the bike.
Rebuild or no rebuild, if they haven't got a clue of the bikes service history/owners etc, it's going to put a confident potential purchase in to a more nervous state.
We shall see....

Yeah I know what you mean.
On other forums im partial too, which is mostly car forums, there is always a sense of bravado on there courtesy of a few plebs. Doesn't seem to be like that here.
I've read a few topics with the odd pointless dickhead remark by some peole, but then again it is hard to know the tone with which a comment is made, or if someone has a sarcastic or dry sense of humour that can be read in a totally different way.
I can understand that it must be frustrating if a new member asks the same old questons that have been answered a thousand times before, but so far I haven't seen any negative remarks to a newbies issues/questions.
Perhaps it's the maturity of the members thats impressive most here.....so far.
Oh nd make sr u kp t txt tlk 2 a min, dnt let it slip in2 a pst, I fd it has no plc in the eng language. Hahaha.......took me ages to write that.
-
The GasGas is a 1998 TX270 Contact and is £875.....the Sherco has also had new levers and bearings with the rebuild.
Tyres look as new on both bikes too.
-
Indeed it does.
When there are tracks dotted about the country it's hard to justify riding illegally.
Now......back to the topic.......
The Sherco 290 has been sold so the Scorpa is still up for grabs, but, I have been made aware of two more bikes that are at present just 5 minutes from where I sit. I'm at work in Gloucester at the moment and I can almost smell the 2 stroke from here.
There is another 2004 Sherco 290 that has been treated to a recent engine rebuild. No more info as yet on that one....it's up for £995. Tempting price I must say.
The second is a GasGas TXT, cant remember if it said 250 or 280. Again, no more info yet but that is up for £1000.
I need to make a few calls about them with the intention of popping by to have a nose......but would I right to assume that the GasGas would be the better option?
They seem to be popular so that must be for a good reason....but the Sherco is blue....mmmmmm.....I like Blue.

I am in the Forest of Dean so quite a way from you I think.
I'm pretty to close to both Monmouth and Chepstow so was wondering if you were reasonably local.
How are you finding the forum so far?
Chris.
-
Who knows, but they are adults so I'm sure it's all above board.
Chris.
-
Haha yes well it was the first kind. But as it turned out I would've preferred it to have been the second kind at the time........just had to divorce her in the end. Not as much fun as the bike route.
-
Hmmm yes it certainly seems to be.
I'll give them a bell and see whats what. Thanks for that.
Well well well I didn't know that.
I know a few people that won't be too pleased to learn that. Always better to be knowledgeable and safe than stupid and in court.
Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
-
Still bloody hurt though.
-
Oooo thanks for that, you might have just saved me a few pennies there. Much appreciated.
Thanks Dan. Thought it was a bit too good of a simple idea.
I only live a couple of minutes from woodland so it was just me trying to be legal and above board.....maybe I should look back to my 20's and just 'walk' it to the woods.
-
Hello fellow newbie.
Where abouts in Wales are you based fella?
Chris.
-
Ha ha very true.
While attending to my motocross interest I always said that if you dont fall off now and then you're not going fast enough.
Turns out that all you really need is to ride straight into the side of a rather stubborn Dear. There not very squishy either....kind of like hitting a fluffy brick wall at speed.....poor thing.
Scaring yourself is half the fun I think.
I like to look at obsticles and think that there is no way I can get over that....and then have a go and find out I was right......oh and by obsticles I really mean sticks, twigs and muddy puddles.
Chris.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
So it looks like the Scorpa is the better buy then?
Well the Beta does sound tempting but the Scorpa is already a bit beyond what I wanted to pay idealy. The fact that it is already registered makes me happier to go a little further, and to be honest, an '09 Beta is definately going to be wasted on me.
I think I will be spending most of my time face first in mother natures delights, if you can pardon the image.
Thanks for the info fella.
I was under the impression that the CBT's restriction is on horsepower not cc's.
Seems a 250/290 trial bike is below 33hp I thought that with a cheeky 'L' plate that would be a quick an easy way to get into the woods.
I'll have to check that out.
-
.....which ones best?
Hello all.
I'm on the hunt for a trial bike and I've come across a couple of gems I'd like your opinions on if possible.
Now I know there are countless "which bike is best" threads, but as this is specific I thought it might warrant a post.
First up is a Scorpa SY250, 2007 model that is road registered.
Pretty good condition except for a few scratches to the plastics.
Recent service and has carbon covers and renthal fat bars.
This one is about 90min from me and is up for

Thanks for the info Martyn, much appreciated.
That is a dam good price for a full year of play time.
Are there a few of you who go up or do you travel up there alone?
Chris.
Thanks fella, nice little website and a well supported club by the looks of it.
Think i'll check it out.
Chris.

I remember going to see Steve at a little demonstration in the forest of dean when I was a kid. Quite a while ago now.
I remember he was doing stoppies/front wheelies/endos, whatever it is they're called, down some pretty steep slopes, and as a kid who had always wanted a bike, that stuff was ace to watch.
Thanks for the information, much appreciated.
Chris.

Afternoon all,
I have just registered with this fine forum. Fair play there are a lot of helpful topics and people on here.
I was wondering if there are any members local to me (Forest Of Dean) that use their bikes locally?
Also are there any other shops apart from BVM Moto in Stroud that do trials bike stuff?
Ta very muchly.
Chris.

Hello all.
Just a quicky.
My name is Chris (32) and i live in Gloucestershire, Engalnd.
I have been wanting to get into trials (not competitive) for a while now.
I've had a few tasty dirt bikes over the years but after a run in, quite literally, with a dear, I've shelved the whole bike thing for a fair while.
That was quite a few years ago, and living in the Forest Of Dean it seems a shame to let all the acres of tasty woodland go to waste, so here I am.
Away with all the motocross bikes of old and in with the skillful trials bike I think.
I have always felt that with motocross bikes, a YZ250 being my preferred weapon of choice, you tend to just hold on and go flat out until you can't hold on any longer.
What appeals to me with trials is the steady skillful nature with which you go about your business. I can see how doing trials makes you a much better rider thanks to the control it requires. I take my hat off to you all.
I have discovered that rather than buying a trailer etc I could just do my CBT and buy a registered bike.
I'm minutes from a wooded playground so it makes sense to take that route.
I am looking forward to browsing the site and learning as much as possible.
If there are any local riders to me maybe I can get some tips on how to stop face planting the earth.
Until then perhaps once a bike purchase has been made I can just upload videos of me falling off.
Thanks for reading my 'hello'.
Chris.
