  2. Hoping to make it but no promises. Still waiting on my license to come in the mail and we all know how fast and efficient the government is..... I may be able to get a ride out and am working on it. Rode a few hours on Sat been swamped with work but hope to get a few more rides in before Sunday (sure hope I can make it) -Mark
  3. It's Alive! Ok so I ordered a new stator and CDI from SplatShop. They got them out quickly but unfortunately they sat in the armpit of the universe (Chicago) for 10 days for whatever reason. I finally got the goods today and got some time to work on my bike this evening. I replaced both the CDI and the stator straight away. I know I know I should have done one then the other so I know what failed but honestly I didn't care I just wanted my bike back. I knew it was ignition, it really had to be and I liked the idea of having all new ignition bits, pointless or not. I Zipped it up, put the tank back on and it started first kick. I swear it runs better than it ever did, snappier off the bottom. Maybe I've just missed it but the fact is It's never started first kick, always 2 or more. Anyway I am a VERY happy camper going to ride tomorrow until my hands bleed or my back is done. I am sure I've fallen out of shape a bit with this break but am very excited to have my bike back.   4. Damnit broken bike still..... Good news though had hearing getting full license back! As soon as it comes in the mail I'll be able to get to any trials meet.
  5. Not yet, but I will soon. New one is on the way, also a stator and CDI from SplatShop. Tired of messing around with this now ignition should be covered.

Yeah I feel kinda bad about not being a purist with the bark busters but the fact is that I do ride through the woods a good bit to get to my natural training area and I was bashing my hands up pretty regularly. I'm actually building a bunch of sections closer to the house on my parents property and when that is done I will likely pull them off.
  7. SOAB... I got my puller today and had a look. No sheared key, no lose stator, still spot on factory timing mark. I'm not sure what to think at this point, If I have a consistent spark the stator has to be OK I would assume? I suppose the coil could be weak. I still think it's ignition related might be some weird issue. I got with Splatshop and will get a Stator/CDI/new plug cap and wire on the way. If it ends up my stator is good I'll just sit on it. I love this bike and will probably have it for a long time... But if it keeps breaking on me I will have to sell it and buy a Honda / Mont
  8. BIff, Yeah I did call Scott and we talked for a bit, nice guy. I was going to have him measure his stator values but after getting input from Splat Shop decided to look at my key first. I have more evidence it could be the key (or timing) further down. According to Ryan my puller is on the way I expect it tomorrow. I did a little investigating tonight and found some damage to the spark lead where it had been rubbing on the frame and rerouted it (will replace it) just in case even it could have been grounding on me. I can not believe I did not do this sooner but I closed up the pole barn and turned off the lights and kicked it over. It absolutely has a spark (a lil blue one) and it is consistent. I'm used to Japanese motocross bikes with their easy to see monster huge sparks. I tried to start it and it looked to me like it was running backwards (it only runs a second or less if it starts). I got someone else to watch it for me and they also agreed it seems like it does not know what direction to run in.. AFAIK this definitely points to a timing issue... I'm hoping to find a sheared key or possibly the stator has come lose and lost it's timing under the flywheel. Will report back when I get the puller and have a look. CMON UPS....
  9. Chris at Splatshop sent me a helpful email so I will share here for the benefit of others as it answers the question I had about the readings from the stator. I've asked him about testing the hall sensor as I am still wondering about that, will post his response (if any) Here is his response about the Hall sensor, so it seems you can test them;
  10. Thanks Cope, Yeah I agree and am also not sure of the value of testing the coils in the stator when it's generally the hall effects switch that fails. AFAIK if I go with RYP the new ones will still come with the OEM hall sensors that are prone to fail? In that case I'd rather wait a week than possibly deal with this again shortly in the future. Probably better get one on the way from someone.... Going to have this bike for awhile won't kill me to have one on hand if it ends up not being the issue... -Mark
  11. I grounded right to the ground bolt the other ignition items ground to. I cleaned it it's a solid ground. I'll give you a call in a sec thanks! -Mark
  12. OK I have tested the stator wires and the values ARE out of recommended. Recommended values in black, mine are in red; Blue no reading (sometimes shown as 1 or error) 1 Brown 1000 to 1600 1946 Black 1050 to 1650 1895 Using the leads the other way around i.e. black lead to the coloured wires, red to earth. Blue 600 to 730 678 Brown 650 to 770 727 Black 650 to 770 728 Also test the resistance's of the other coil wires, leads either way around. White to red 95 ohms 85 Red to green 550 ohms 542 Green to white 640 ohms 619 I'm not sure how to interpret these results is this conclusive that the stator is bad? Is so I'd probably want one with the upgraded hall switch, what is the fastest option for replacing it? I am in USA.

Values courtesy of Splat Shop but will post here if perhaps someone in the future stumbles onto this thread with a similar issue; Testing and checking your Sherco stator plates, only applicable to the Leonelli stators from 2002 to 2007. The trigger, using the diode check mode on a multi meter, you should get reading something like this, don't worry about exact numbers if it is somewhere in the same region. Using the red lead to the plug terminals and black to earth.   16. I've checked everything (except flywheel key) and no dice same behavior. Cleaned the ground to the lleonelli CDI unit, unplugged the kill switch. I have a flywheel puller on the way from RYP then I will be able to test the stator and trigger AFAIK. Can't see if the key is busted until flywheel is off. This sucks I feel like a kid who's had all his toys taken away
  17. Thanks guys for the tips. Guess I'll hold off on calling the shop, having nightmares of them keeping it for a month and accomplishing nothing. I did check the kill switch right away will have a look at the other stuff as well. -Mark
  18. I was out riding my 04 Sherco 2.9 yesterday and all was well it had been running like a top all evening. I was done riding and was headed back home in fourth gear and all of the sudden the engine just cut off completely. It will fire but only briefly and will not run for more than a second or so even then only very occasionally. I changed the plug, cleaned the carb and it's acting the same way. It's not a fuel issue as it was not changed and will act the same if I kick it and spray new fuel through the carb with the airbox removed. Although I've not tested with a compression tester it kicks hard and sure seems to have plenty of compression also this problem happened almost instantly and it had ran perfectly up until it shut off. I did remove the exhaust and had a look at the piston and ring and they look as new. Reeds looked fine as well. Anyway, The spark looks to me to be very weak and I suspect the problem is with ignition. I've read Sherco's can have ignition issues but it looks like I need a special tool (that I don't have) to have a look under the flywheel. I'm thinking about just taking it somewhere local because I want it fixed ASAP and I am busy running my business all week. I am a little worried they won't know where to get parts or whatever else... Is it an issue taking these bikes to a shop that works on the standard Japanese motocross bikes and the like?
  19. Sorry I ended up getting really sick and could not make it to the event. Good news is I have my drivers hearing the 15th (4 days) so I could be able to drive again in a month or so and then will be able to make it out for sure. My bike died yesterday unfortunately so now I am trying to figure out whats up with it as it's not running right now. I'm posting a help thread in the Sherco section.

  21. Thanks for the tips Biff, appreciate it. Funny you mention the fender thing... I caught myself doing that on my ride tonight and ate it badly. Was a section with 2 large logs in a row ground was wet and slippery. I kinda got outta shape on the first one and messed me up the second one. Ended up face pushed into the ground laughing my ass off my still running bike on top of me.... Vermontville is just about an hour away from me I hope to get my restricted back soon, it would be really cool to ride with some others, I've never even seen another trials bike in my neck of the woods. I've been riding about 4-8 hours a week lately trying to force my self to make it a challenge and NOT let my rides turn into enduro type leisure rides. It's easy to do when I start getting tired. There are lots of really technical areas deep in the woods and they are definitely improving my clutch/brake control. Next step is to make a few sections on my parents property so I can practice various techniques and staying in the lanes. Going to try like Hell to make it out to the next local even so I can learn some stuff! -Mark
  22. Thanks Zippy, I have not forgotten about you guys, I want to ride with you all but currently have an issue with my drivers license. (DUI) I am hoping to get it back soon but who knows they are not making things easy for me. i think I must have dated my hearing officers sister or something, she freaking hates me..... I might be able to bribe/coerce a family member or friend to come out with me. In the meanwhile I am practicing and learning all I can... Ryan Young sure makes this stuff look easy... -Mark
  23. Thanks for the warning, I had not thought of that. Broken wrists would not be a good thing. I am def pretty bruised up from falling but nothing really bad yet. biggest issue is my hands are like hamburger with blisters will be easier when they toughen up. -Mark

  25. My stomping ground.... I got a nice 2004 Sherco 2.9 earlier this year, have about 4-5 tanks of gas through it. Been riding some of the old stomping grounds I used to hit when I was a kid. More fun on a trials bike for sure, starting to get into decent bike shape. Anyway it been fun learning all I can thought I'd share a few pics of where I ride. I am lucky to be able to ride right from home my parents have some land in the country and all the old trails I rode as a kid are still right where they used to be This section goes on like this for a very long time, LOTS of gnarly sections like this to try and get over. I basically try to go slowly and get over as much as I can without dabbing, I still suck bad but sections like this get me breathing hard fast. More of the same, tons of logs to practice my blips and double blips. I pushed it a little too much tonight my hands/wrists got tired and took a nice trip over the handlebars after missing the tree.... Another section here lots of hills and ditches to hop over along this power line. This was on my parents property I have a bunch of these suckers I drug all over their property with a skid steer. Sherco's are great at stripping bark, I never knew that.... Bar ends help as I ride a LOT through the forest and I was bashing up my hands pretty badly. I have another section that is really cool but I have to wait for the spring thaw to finish. To get to them I have to ride 200 yards through a metal tube that goes underneath a divided highway. I tried earlier this week to make it through and got stuck in the middle (that sucked bad) Anyway just thought I would share some pics.... Also I have a question for anyone who knows.... When you guys are doing blips and double blips, zaps, etc to you bother covering the rear brake? It seems much easier for me to be on the balls of my feet when approaching these logs and I don't want to get practice of doing them the wrong way. Or do you re position your feet if you need to hit the rear brake? Seems like that would be very difficult during the act, esp if you are trying to hold pressure?
