Any one know where I can get one of the aftermarket front sections (JK Hirst are out of stock and not sure when they will have anymore)
I was thinking of asking a local company who make custom car exhaust systems to maybe look at making a stainless one for me but I would imagine a one off might be a bit pricey.
If anyone else is interested?? I could get a price for a job lot of say 12 to try and get the price down.
any ideas ??
Cheers

Just had one of those eureka moments, used the car size spring compressor, put the bottom jaws under the T of the vice handle and the top through the spring in the space just under the main shock body and hey presto it works !!!!!
Thanks for all the suggestions

Anyone know if a spring compressor type tool is available for monoshock springs, car ones are too big, spent the last hour scratching my head - every idea i've come up with just compresses the damper rod as well as the spring - need some way to isolate the the compression to the spring only.
Any tricks of the trade??
Thanks

have a look at this french site - might give you food for thought http://www.frederic-fleury.com/xty/

the engraver solution sound good - do you think an engraver could make a good job of re numbering the actual frame in the correct style, Ive got another couple of monos with clear frame numbers to use as samples??

Hi
Just putting my bike back together after a complete strip down (its a road registered TY250 Mono)
The frame number is almost invisible, as far as I am aware the MOT tester has to input the frame number into the computer before testing.
As far as I can see the options I have are:
1. Leave as is - the number will disappear completely when the frame is painted although the bike does still have the riveted on aluminium plate with the number on.
2. Restamp the numer into the frame - i've seen number punch sets for sale on the web - I assume the style will be slightly different from the original - will this look a bit dodgy?
Has anyone else had this problem or know the best way to resolve it
Thanks in advance

Hi
Anyone know how to clamp the damper rod without damaging it so I can unscrew (I'm assuming its screwed in??) the damper from the shock base.
I've tried a couple of pieces of wood in the vice but can't get enough grip.
I want to strip an early TY mono shock (the one without the remote reservoir) so I can give it a good clean etc.

Hi
Been stripping the paint of a recently aquired TY250 (59N) and found the number 75 stamped in the top frame tube about an inch back from the headstock.
Really small numbers and obviously from the factory as they were not visible until I removed the paint.
Anyone got any idea what they signify.
Cheers

Try Birkett's - I bought a set of rear stainless Z spokes from them last year - I think they had several sets made.
Also try e-bay - there was a complete set of front and rears on there yesterday (

TY250 Mono
Normally starts 1st or 2nd kick, been stood for a few weeks.
Started no problem on Tuesday, came to start yesterday - no joy.
Checked good spark and fuel getting through.
Ive had the carb off and blown through with an airline - no gunge in float bowl.
Only thing I can think of is that the fuel has gone off. If I dip the plug in some fuel drained from tank and light with a cig lighter it burns.
If I remove wet plug from bike it will not burn???
Can anyone help please - its doing my head in.
Thanks in advance

Peter,
The battery holder fits on the frame behind and below the airbox, there is also a black plastic side cover which fits over the top of the battery. Where your bike has the shock reservoir you would originally have had an oil tank.
Also the bike would have had a bolt on rear frame loop with a plastic toolkit carrier, the correct rear light mounts to the frame loop.
If you let me have your e-mail address I can send you some pics of my almost finished restoration with the bits I've mention in place.

Hi
I have a bike with frame number begining 53Y, engine number 53Y with no other digits.
Mine is a 1984 250S (Japanese import - I have the customs paperwork).
The bike oriinally had a plastic tank.
Interestingly the cylinder head does not have the mounting holes for the extra bracket although the frame has.
It has a steering lock along with all the extra frame lugs for rear frame stay, battery, side cover, brake light switch etc.
Hope this helps

Hi
Ive just picked up yet another TY250 Mono as a parts donor, has a couple of interesting modifications, wondered if they are familiar to anyone.
The front end has a disc brake conversion using a brembo caliper, it appears to be clamped to the fork leg. I assume this is aftermarket as surely a Yamaha version would have a mounting point on the forks.
Also the back end has a disc brake conversion as well, the gut I bought it from said he'd owned the bike for 10 years and it was like that when he got it - he bought it from a trials bike specialist in the North East who told him the back end was from a Gas Gas.
Ill try and post some pics in the next few days if its of interest to anyone.

HI
I've already sourced a good TY250 front end with disc brake setup.
Might be able to help with a bare TY mono frame - give me a ring on 07852 976177 if you are interested.

Thanks for the quick response.
Have you any idea what they are worth - chrome is very good only a few tiny tiny marks.

Hi
Ive just bought a Yamaha TY250 Monoshock thats got Aprilia forks and front disk brake wheel in.
I intend to convert the bike back to standard Yamaha and was going to put the Aprilia forks on e-bay but could do with some help in identifying which Aprilia they are from.
The bike has the original Yamaha triple tree so the forks must be same diameter as Yamaha 35mm I think.

I have a Japanese Import TY250 Mono (1984) is has a complete autolube system fitted (or will have once the bike is back in one piece again). The main difference between this and the twinshock versions appears to be that the speed of the oil pump is not controlled by a split throttle cable, but only by the speed of the crank.
There is a feed pipe from the oil tank to the oil pump and a return pipe to tha carb, thats it - no cable attachment at all.
I have spoken to several people about this and no-one is sure how the correct amount of oil is sent to the carb as obviously the amount of oil being pumped will be a fraction delayed behind the engine speed and will also be affected by which gear you are in rather than the throttle opening.
Anyone got an answer to this one??

After lots of phone calls and e-mails - Birketts (01229 716806) can supply rear spokes and nipples. Fronts are apparently still available from Yamaha.
Hope this may be of help to others.

Does anyone know where I can buy a full set of front and rear Z spokes plus nipples?
Thanks in advance

Hi
Further to my recent post - I'm making progress with some of the major parts needed.
As far as I can make out these Japanese spec bikes had a conventional instrument binnacle and a battery box, has any one out there got a fully specced version of one of these or a good scource of pictures - I really need to know which bits are missing and what they look like (part numbers etc). I'm building the bike for light road use and to do some green lane days so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi I'm just starting a restoration on a 1984 TY250 Mono - the bike is a Japanese import and has lighting kit and steering lock - long list of parts needed (preferably new) can anyone help or suggest a likely scource please:
Tank (plastic)
Seat
Front and Rear Fenders
Oil Tank
Rear Light
Head Bearings
Swinging arm bushes and bearings
Rear brake cable
Wheel bearings
Clutch arm
Exhaust gasket
Exhaust rubber - the one that joins back box to main exhaust
Air filter
Kickstart rubber cover
All the rubber frame grommets
Bashplate
Graphics kit
Forks - or contact for rechroming
Thats for starters - I'm sure there will be lots more.
Ive just finished a 1976 TY175 which I am quite pleased with and want to do a really good job on the mono.
Also can anyone give a definitive list of requirements for a daytime MOT.
Cheers
Tim
