I have to agree with Mike on what he says in this weeks column.
I personally don't see any problem in someone making a living out of the sport of trials, it's not what I do, but with all sports there are professionals involved, its as simple as that!
I have returned today from the Highland Classic 2 Day event that my local club put on near Aviemore, everyone enjoyed themselves as did Peter Salt; Mick Wilkinson; John Tye and also Carlos Casas who, with 11 more of his countrymen made a long trip from Spain to the Scottish Highlands to ride at a great venue. Our club and its volunteers would not even consider the possibility of making money from such an event but that doesn't imply that other higher level events have to be run purely for the fun alone. Its a different league!
The model 80 (Sherpa) of that same year had exactly the same set up... correct the brake actuator is on upside down!
The cable had what was known as a "solderless nipple" attached (small grub screw on nipple head tightened against cable which was threaded through the nipple).
The brake cable was threaded through the small hole in the boss on the brake plate as shown in your photo, then the solderless nipple was attached to the end of the cable and pushed up and tightened to create a brake cable, leave about 10 mm or so sticking out proud which can be soldered together as required.
Remove the brake actuator (lever) and refit the other way up of course otherwise there is nothing to let the solderless nipple to attach itself to!
You will need to get a brake cable free at one end or get a long one and cut the lower nipple off and get a solderless one. There are several places that stock these.
Yes Big John: this year I'll have the oportunity of riding the Highland Classic Two Days at Alvie. So I'm willing to be there on a few days....And there will be apart from Mr.Javier Cruz another 8-9 Spanish riders.
See you all at Alvie !!
Mick Wilkinson is coming now too. Should be fun times!
Well, it looks like a stock 199A with the rear subframe modified to be similar to the later 199B.
Even if it was one of Bernie's bikes, which I personally doubt or not easily verified, as most of his weer probably supplied by either Bay Area Bultaco or the factory... so what? He rode them for around 6 months then got a new one. Bernie must have had litterally dozens of 325 Bultacos in his career, just look as his book, just about every photo, he's on a different bike! Some in competitions, some were "training" bikes.
I see a certain weekly publication ran a short story on the Highland Classic at Alvie in this week's edition, breaking news that Carlos Casas has entered!
I would say that the severity of past trials may put some folks on the old bikes off. I've been the last 2 years but have other commitments this weekend so will not be able to attend.
Hamish
Fair point Hamish, the severity of the "Allie Beag Invaders" was definately putting folk off riding it, the Stewards' report in past years reflected this point. However, Lochaber MCC are "under new management" now!
I always take the view if you have only done one thing to a bike and it won't start, what was the last thing you did/changed? Thta will be the root cause!
Obviously changing the oil and filter will not be directly involved with a no-start.
However, disconnecting the electrical supply plug and not reconnecting it properly will have an effect, as will a throttle cable pulled out of its moorings, this will decline a start as the bike will be in unsafe mode! Did you have the bike keeled over and inadvertantly pull out the cable?
Was there anything else you did to the bike other than change the oil and filter?
