  1. Sorry about my 'vague' reply, regarding centre hole, I was refering to the hole in the middle of the backplate, where the spindle goes through. Enlarging the hole by 20thou or more, this allows the brake shoes to centralise themselves in the brake drum, allowing maximum contact area. Assemble front wheel assembly into forks, leaving front wheel spindle loose, apply front brake, then tighten front wheel spindle, this centres the shoes in the drum..It's just the inherent design of drum brakes, trying to expand a smaller diameter into a larger diameter, engineers tried to overcome the problems by 'twin' leading shoes, and even quad leading shoe. There's probably room for improvement, by using modern materials, that could deform to accept the diameter of the drum and still retain friction properties, therefore utilising the full swept area (spongy kevlar maybe !). All developement ceased with the introduction of disc brakes.
  2. Thats CDN $150 plus shipping. And do they make them for the SWM?, site does not give model info. As a retired person, I"d like to spend my time making something work . But thanks for the info I have all winter to consider the flash pegs....cheers
  3. I would like to upgrade my footpegs on my 1980 320. Yes I could buy a weld on set, but the frame is all nicely painted and if I could just fiddle the pegs, and not the bike frame I would be happy. None of my vintage Ossas or my old Husky help . My KDX 220 is not much help either. My 02 Beta is close but the peg ears are just a mm to wide to fit between the peg ears on the SWM frame and the pin hole is quite a bit further out. Interestingly the pegs on my DR 650 are very close. Fit nicely between the ears on the SWM frame and would just need a bit of grinding to sit in close to the frame and have the pin holes welded up or perhaps just a sleve welded in to sleve them down to the hole size on the SWM frame ears. I do have grinders and a mig welder at home so steel pegs would be easy to modify. Anyone done a peg upgrade? Any ideas? Thanks all....cheers

    Swm Clutch

Just an update to an old topic. I bought my old SWM back this spring.....see my first SWM...Have been trying to go through it a bit but will have more time in the winter. Read all the clutch info here. In the old days I had lengthened the arm, so now I filed smooth all the plates and put it back together with a new cable and just 4 springs. Works pretty good now, almost a one finger, two no problem. More important nice complete release, no creaping etc. And it does 4th gear wheelies from a walking pace with no slipping. I'm happy.....cheers......Phil
  5. There is a link on Matt's site for a Yahoo OSSA group as well. While more us based, still a very good group for parts and info.
  6. I read that post by Greeves about boring out the axel hole in the backing plate. Interesting, the rest of the procedure I was familar with holding on the brake before tighten up the axel nut and brake stay, but the hole expansion was new, think I'll try it....
  7. Shoes are back and look good have not tried them but I think they will work well. Thickness varies from a max of almost 5 to down to near 4 mm. I gave them the wheel, hub shoes springs all etc. So after the lined them they arced it all in. My buddy does enough business with them they just did it for free. I'm going to have to take a case of beer over though the next time I drop in I reckon.....cheers
  8. I'm not sure about that funky kickstart.
  9. When I started working part time in garages in the 60's while in high school, we still rebuilt generators. Did'nt have alternators. And yes we had flatheads and hand lapped the valves. I think one reason we like the cars and bikes of our youth, is that like the times they were much simpler. Tune up was plugs, points, condensor, set the dwell, timing, and adjust the carb. Real hands on stuff.....now its plug in the scan tool and read the code and say WTF now? Thanks for the laughs and mems.....cheers....phil
  10. Thats the kind of info I need. And yes I can take all the stuff to them. They made me new shoes for the rear of my Tiger, and make shoes for tractors and all kinds of industrail equipment. Bascally they can make any kind of brake stuff. I'll measure up my hub, shoes ,backing plate etc. maybe use a bit of clay and guess a bit. 5 mm sounds good looking at what I have now and I can arc them in nice and close. I'll get them to use a nice grippy compound, some of these guys used to do our bike shoes back in the 70's and even made my Bultaco stop. Thanks

    Brake Shoes

Hi the project is started. I'd like to reline the shoes on my 80 tl 320, does anyone know the appox orginal lining thickness? We relign shoes all the time on old cars that are hard to find stuff for, plus we can get various compounds and real fast turn around from the shop we use. Price is good as well and no shipping....lol.....thanks
  12. Thank you. I'm just a gearhead for almost anything, no matter the number of wheels. I'ts a MKII numbers matching car with most of the LAT options. Still just a nice driver not a concours car, but she is running real well now. One more bit of work on it then maybe I can get to the swimmer.Gotta change tires on the KDX and service the Beta too, then there is the OSSA, oh well good thing I'm retired so I don't really have to work.
  13. The ones on the bike now are almost 15 inches and are wrong. The orginial ones were 13 .9 inches. My booklet from the USA SWM distributor back in 1980 said we could use 14 inch or even 14.25. I have ordered new Falcon's from BJ racing in Tenn. They will be 13.9 inches. A touch longer would sharpen the steering which it could prob use but I'll go with the org length.
  14. Nice website, lots of stuff. While I probably would not order from them, the fact that it is available is nice to know. Also means that one of the twinshock trials shops in the states probably has it as well and I know what to ask for. I was looking at the footrests on my 02 Beta and thought they might fit, interesting that the Sherco ones are close and I know that B&J in the states have the weld on pegs, prob got them from the UK. Couple more projects to finish then I'll start fiddling with the swimmer.
  15. Actually I'm in Canada.....lol
