Hi, I too picked up a Sherpa M27 which had stood in an open barn since 1980.. Before and progress to date pics attached.

My main problems were the tank - eventually replaced it with a Terry Weedy alloy job - and missing front pipe - I have had to heavily mod a club foot item. Still a bit to do but close to the first firing up (I hope)

Good luck with your project and if I can help please get in touch

Must admit to being a bit chuffed

So you should be - bike looks brilliant! The Terry Weedy tank interests me - if it fits a M27 I think it would fit a M49. Was it a straightforward fit?

  2. Sadly it's doesn't qualify for the ACU Trailbike Trials series because it's wheelbase is under 1350mm and fuel tank capacity is under 5 litres. I don't know what the seat length is but that's the other criteria for bikes in this series. Of course, there are plenty of long distance trials not in the series - it's up to the organisers to decide what class it's in.

Unfortunately, it seems the manufacturers of trail/longride bikes don't know what an LDT is - if only Gas Gas would make a trials-derived 2 stroke Pampera again! The Sherco X-ride is within the rules and a good bike but IMO it ain't no Pampera.

  3. Great to see interest in the Scorpion - we have one of Dave Lomas' 2 bikes and would really like to be in contact with former riders and current owners.

I rode it in the 2012 pre 65 Scottish http://www.wgdfmcc.org.uk/events/othertrials/pre65_scottish_2012.htm and the bike will be there again this year in case I can get a ride (more in hope than expectation!).

There's a pic of it in the 2 stroke trials book after Dave Lomas removed the tank and put the fuel in the frame. Here's a pic of it now:

  4. Excellent column as usual Mike.

I know of 2 trials which started before the Scottish - the Edinburgh Trial in 1904, and the Land's End in 1908. The Exeter Trial, also run by the Motor Cycling Club, started in 1910. I have competed on 2,3, and 4 wheels in these events. Now catering for cars as well as bikes, "the Classics" are a different proposition to the SSDT but a tough challenge. The sections are straightforward but not if you've been awake all night in the pouring rain, doing all your own navigation and repairs. And one dab, and the chance of a gold award is gone.

    Long live them all...
