  1. The following youtube gives an example of a very talented rider, I have no idea who he is and I'm not picking on him or saying he's a pot hunter.

    That is Ben Butterworth at the nostalgia 3 years ago. A very very good rider I see in the results regularly in classics (lost out on 3 way tie at captains trial at the weekend). In the results I see him at the top, but not necessarily cleaning everything, and others not far behind.

    I have to say over the last year in classics we have had nothing but encouragement for my son - and these will tell you to your face, but the tiny minority of whingers never will....

  2. Re young riders, the Classic Manx has a rule which states the winner must be over (40?) Younger riders still ride, and may have the lowest score. The age rule is to sort the pot hunter from the genuine enthusiast.

    Appreciate the response, but where does age come into 'pot hunter' and 'Genuine Enthusiast' ?

    My son is 13 - if he won it would be on ability, and he has equal or more genuine enthusiasm for Pre 65 than most people (he lives and breathes it)

  3. A bit off piste but I thought I would share....

    Me and my son ride twinshock (on Hondas) and Pre 65 on genuine pre 65 bikes

    We did our first vintage trial a few weeks ago, after joining the organisation, checking with the organisers etc. Had a great day, some very friendly guys, good trial.

    The following week we were at another (twinshock) trial, and were told confidentially that after the trial there were a couple of dissenters who thought "kids shouldn't be riding pre 65"

    Now my son is 13, a good rider, capable, organisation member, polite, respectful, helpful (he observed his allocated section for a lap no arguments) - and was riding probably one of the most eligible bikes there (1955 James) !

    Are we put off ? Far from it - I thanked the guy for him telling me, and said we will definitely be at the next trial !

    I understand this thread is about "rules" and invariably rules will always get bent to the point of breaking - what is that breaking point is the issue, but we cant let politics spoil a great days sport (which is the point of my post...... !

  4. Rang villiers services this morning and it appears that it is only the need to adjust the clutch push rod to take up the float (albeit there appears to be a lot of float .... but it is 60 years old...)

    Apparently there is an internal adjuster if you take the dust cover off on the kickstart side of the engine.

    Ill keep you posted....

  5. Hi there

    Following on from my previous topic on gearbox sprocket....

    I got a 13T sprocket off Villiers services to replace my 17T with and at the same time decided to change the cork clutch plates for ferrodo. Sent my plates away for exchange, everything arrived - all good.....

    Disassembly, went OK, everything removed etc fitted 13T gearbox sprocket

    Reassembly ..... problem....

    There is now about 3-4mm lateral play on the splined shaft that the clutch fits on, therefore when the clutch is re- assembled the clutch actuator simply pushes the entire clutch assembly out rather that pushing the pressure plate out against the springs ???

    Any idea what could have gone wrong ?

    I spoke to villiers services who were very helpful.

    In the first instance im going to try a 14t front sprocket (on the bike is a 17t)

    While im doing this i'll check the clutch out.

    Thanks for the advice, and im sure you will see me and my son out and about on classic and twinshock trials this year

    I think that's how I was riding (and my son riding) after a while today. I said leave the clutch completely alone - it will pull on tick over, and even if you wind the throttle on hard, its not like a modern bike and wont leap out of your hands.

    It seems a nice little bike to ride (1955 James Captain) - its very small and light, and like I said the power delivery surprised me (almost 4 stroke - will pull from nothing).

    I may get a new bigger tooth back sprocket for it, or just let Chris get used to riding it as it.

    I think bigger rear wheel sprocket may be the way to go based upon the replies

    I was surprised at how well it pulls from tickover with no clutch anyway (almost 4 stroke like!) so may just be a case of getting used to it.

    My son (nearly 13) will be riding it in VMCC trials this year (as well as his TLM50 in twinshock trials - see below)

    .....looking forward to 2015 !
