I have been just reading forums on trials central for at least one year now and after reading this thread i had to become a member so i could put my 2 cents in. so here it is:

dont buy a gas gas 320 they were probably the worst running gas gas made and you will never need all that power, to put it in perspectve kids from england can ride a gas gas 200 and do anything our U.S. Pros can do, and that bigger motor will make the bike feel heavier,

so at most get a 250, 270, 280

if i was you i would get a better bike off the bat, what will probably happen is that you buy a late 90's bike and like trials and then after about a year cant get rid of the bike to get a newer one

you can find good 2002-2004 bikes for sale between 2000-3000 and you will be able to ride and be competative for much longer

try looking on trials comp's forum's, shiping is not a problem

as for boots and helmets this place i have found to be one of the cheepest even after shiping and exchange rate just plug in your credit card just like any other site and every thing is fine

as for which bike i like, just like it has been said above there are good and bad qualities of every bike personally i have owned many scorpa's and was quite happy with the reliability and feel of the bike, i have had one sherco and was happy with it as well, and now i own a gas gas 06 280 and i just love it very light weight good power confidence inspiring and i have found it easier to balance than most other bikes,

if i was to buy used i would look for a beta, montesa, or scorpa all of these bikes for the last 5-6 years haven't had seriously bad problems and with beta's and montesa's good solid aluminum frame it will feel tighter/ more ridgid longer while most your other bikes loosen up after about a year or two

i would focus on reliability because no one wants to show up for an event and have to check or something because my bike was broken again

and that kind of reliability i have seen from beta, montesa, and scorpa

gas gas's have had a reputation for needing more maitence and for having gear box and clutch problems up til about 2005,

oh and i have a 2004 scorpa for sale for 3000 if your interested

you need to keep us informed on what you are up to, did you pick a bike, and all that. I love tracking newbies to the sport, in fact I am trying to make it my life's work, lol... making trials newbs and tracking them.

Remember the biggest and best rule in trials is, BRING A FRIEND

Thanks for the interest. I haven't got anything yet.

I do have a huge list of almost 40 used bikes. I researched several sites and made some calls in my area. Now I have to start picking favorites and slimming the list down to what I really want. I have choices available in every brand and have started to form some basic opinions.

I plan to start making calls and emails soon to get details on the ones I like. My goal is to buy something by March at the latest. I plan to attend the Wyoming Trials Association series that starts in April. I want to get a few weekends worth of practice before then if possible.

Thanks to everyone for their info and advice. I am very excited to get something and and hope to make a good decision based on your help. I will keep you posted when I get one. And I may get some pics once I get rolling.

I got a bike.

I picked up a 2003 Sherco 2.9 this weekend. I had a friend in the Denver area check it out for me. He said it looked clean and cared for so I made an offer. Then I drove the 1300 miles round trip to pick it up.

I am soooo excited. I have to do some minor cleanup and rejet the carb. Then I will be ready to start learning.

Thanks again to all the input from you guys. I am very happy with my purchase and plan to ride this for the next season or two with total confidence in the bike. (I just need to practice and gain some confidence in myself)

Nice bike, lots of POWER! See my tips in the Sherco forum if you find it to bee too much.

Read the tips on the RYP side and ALWAYS ck the filter/airbox for water after washing the bike. Or better yet, just pull the two screws, remove the fender and stuff a rag in it to prevent water entry, then wash it. One more screw and the tank is off so you can clean everything. Sherco's are the easiest bikes to maintain.

I usually start at 35/120 on the jetting. Your mileage may vary!

Well done.I've been following this thread as i am also after a first trials bike and are trying to work out which bike to get.Although I didn't see the Sherco coming.I am thinking of getting a Sherco 250 or 290 myself and come from a MX and enduro background while lately i have been doing alot of MTBing for the last few years.I'd be interested to hear how you go transferring from bike trials to moto trials?Especially how different bunny hopping the two bikes are.I think the Sherco would be good for me because i live in Australia and it is extremely dry here and there are alot of rocks and 2/3 ft steps around here.
