jon v8 Posted April 14, 2007 Report Share Posted April 14, 2007 Having bought a Ty 175 earlier in the week I have now bought an old H reg Mont,it looks exactly like the one on p70 of vol 2 of 20yrs of twinshock trials - with Dave Rowland riding it. Its in a bit of a state,having been left out in the rain for a while,but its complete apart from an air filter and a few little bits.The engine wont turn over,but I'm not worried about rebuilding the engine except for knowing the best place to get bits from and are they easily available? What are they like to ride,will I like it compared to my TY250 twinshock ? Is the gearbox a 4 or 5 speed ? Sorry to be asking questions yet again but there is so little written about trials bikes and yet so much knowledge on this forum its nice to be able to use it. woody Posted April 15, 2007 Report Share Posted April 15, 2007 Sounds like you have a MK1 or 2 247 Cota with the 'bulges' either side of the fuel tank. Parts can be a bit hard to get in the UK, most likely sources are Miller, Mainly Spanish, Gordon Farley. Sandifords don't seem to have much at all for the older bikes. Bultaco UK are starting to cater for other makes but doubt he has much for an old Cota just yet. iN THE usa, Jeff Nolen in Texas specialises in Monts and has just bought up old stock from Sandifords. Can't remember the name he trades under, Vintage something or other but someone from the US should know. Also Southwest Montesa in the US. You should find it a nice handling bike but as I remember, they could be a bit slow/gaspy off the throttle, the later MK3 and 4 were more responsive. Don't know how it would compare to a TY250 though as never ridden one, only Majesty. Should be a 5 speed I think. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
jon v8 Posted April 15, 2007 Author Report Share Posted April 15, 2007 Cheers for that Woody,I've done a bit more looking on Google and found a website that shows pics of the individual model years of Cotas.The one I am getting loos more like the 1968 model as it has the large diameter brake drums - much bigger than the 1970 version.There is no pic for 1969 model so I guess I'll keep looking.The bike has an H reg number plate but that is no guarantee of the year it was built really.Thanks again. Give mainly spanish a bell 01425 611287. he'd be able to give you abit more history on it at least.The spare's will be a diffrent matter though. Good Luck.
